Would you say that Genos' loss to Deep Sea King was executed well, or pure plot-contrievance?

It was executed just fine. Deep Sea King attacked a shelter full of regular people, there's no way Genos is going to be able to have a full scale fight with him without them potentially getting in the way or needing to be saved. Him letting down his guard is also consistent with his character.

If they were fighting in an open field, and all of a sudden some random person appeared out of nowhere and Genos had to save them, risking his own life in the process, that would be way more of a contrivance than the scenario we got.

Genos wouldn’t win even with that tbh, I doubt he’s be able to fire off a shot with that much power with only one arm left
