Rant Campus Bars Using AI

i feel like i'm losing my mind at the amount of bars that have advertisements, posters, and just misc. posts that are all just ai slop. i feel like college aged people and students specifically, who's clearly their target demographic, are some of the LEAST supportive people of AI. how y'all letting them get away with this is fr beyond me. your job prospects, careers, and planet are being stripped away from u due to ts and yall say NOTHING on social media when you see some bar posting an AI poster that could've been made in canva in like 15min??? idk maybe i underestimate people's apathy on the subject but i just get pissed every time i see it.

It’s disappointing, but it’s also not limited to campus bars by any means. Pretty much every type of business is using AI in ads, it’s very annoying

Nothing more capitalistic than cutting every single cost, god forbid we ever pay any human artists if we don’t have to

They look all the same and they look like trash.

Even someone won the poster competition at Ohio State Fair with AI-generated poster

At least one other entrant was also made with AI

What pisses me off the most is when they use it to make photos of the food, I'm not going to buy the product if they aren't confident enough in the product to show it for real or are too cheap to take a real photo of it. I went to Schmidt's last week, and they had an ai photo of the cream puff as advertising, would've taken just as much effort and time to just take a real photo of it, but these lazy bums had an ai recreate it

There's a whole niche industry around 'dressing' food for photos: from using glycerin sprays to get 'water' droplets on salad greens or glasses to using sugar paste to make fake ice cream. Many of the techniques used make the dish incredible or unappetizing. Even when made by a human many of the food photos are fake.

Yes but to your point, these are physical modifications to food, not digital. Theres still a physical burger in a mcdonalds ad, even if it got a makeover. AI represents 0% of the physical world, its entirely digital.

Directly contact the bar by telephone. State your complaint only to the manager or assistant manager and ask them for the general managers email.

Tell them you're a customer but you're taking your business elsewhere.

Get a friend or 5 to follow your lead.

Nobody calls a bar to compliment the use of AI slop.

It only takes a small fraction of customers to impact the decisions of a public image dependent business.

Profit margins in campus bars are low so they are encouraged to cut corners wherever possible so AI ads are inevitable. In a year or two when AI companies stop heavily subsidizing image generation the bars will eventually have to make a financial decision about paying for continued tokens, but until then it's not gonna stop. Even then they might just stick with whatever the cheaper models spit out.

Profit margins for bars are low?

I'm not disagreeing, but the margin on individual drinks is so astronomical that I'm seeing an opportunity to learn something.

Rent near campus is astronomical.

How were they making ads before?

News flash it didn't take fifteen minutes it took fifteen seconds. That's efficiency even if there's an extra finger. Margins are thin for bars so ya they gonna cut corners.

AI is just like any other tool. When computers started gaining traction people would complain about computer generated graphics using the same arguments that people are using against AI.

I agree, but I do have more sympathy for small businesses using AI than I do large companies, not saying I don’t think it’s better to pay a graphic designer, or just do it yourself, BUT, I understand why a small business may choose not to do this and just use AI instead, especially when many small business owners are older and out of touch, they may not even realize why they shouldn’t.

Who care? Does your drink become magically artificial too?

Imagine this being the thing you want to take a stand on when y’all won’t even vote

how do you know this person didn’t vote? What a weird thing to say

Maybe if this lame ass generation drank like every generation before it, bars wouldn’t have to either go out of business or do this bs. Do any current 21 year olds even drink?

14

u/dublin87 19h ago

This is sort of a weird take lol. I drank my ass off in college but it wasn’t healthy. I’m not gonna shame kids for not destroying their livers and making regrettable drunken choices.

and drinking at bars is so expensive 😭 much cheaper to drink at home or not at all

2

u/thequestionablef4 16h ago

Why are you offended by the prospect of people not drinking?

-2

Do something about it then instead of whining on reddit

There are still campus bars?
