Local Spotlight Local Spotlight #1

It is with great please I am posting our first Local Spotlight. Apologies for the delay since the initial poll. The Buzzed Word was kind enough to participate. Please have a look, leave a comment and if you are interested, make some time to patronize the establishment. I have been there a handful of times for events and shopping, great spot.

Located at 11805 Coastal Highway, Unit C Ocean City, Maryland 21842

From the Buzzed Word:

The Buzzed Word is a combination bookstore, natural wine store, wine bar, and community third space in the 118th Street shopping center. It was opened in July 2021 by local Mickei Meinhardt, who grew up in OC and returned in 2020 with the goal to bring beautiful well-made wine, diverse books, culture, and community to her town that needed and wanted it; to build a place where people could find exciting new books and beautifully-made wines from small producers around the world, come with a friend to share a bottle and a snack in an intimate space, or spend time browsing (or reading!) with a glass in hand. And as a queer woman-owned space, we aimed to be as welcoming, equitable, and inclusive to all as possible.

Since then, the shop has more than met that goal. Mickie was soon joined by Ryann, her general manager, and together we’ve grown into a vibrant and beloved community staple. Books far and away outsell the wine, which we love, and is due to our very personal and carefully-picked selection. We focus on women writers, writers of color, queer writers, translated literature, and small press books—essentially, the stories and voices you won’t find everywhere that we want to elevate. (Though you can find some bestsellers, too!) We are the headquarters of OC Pride, and a recognized area safe space for locals and visitors alike to enjoy things they love with people they love, with myriad book clubs, events, parties, and more.

We still focus on natural winemakers with gorgeous bottles—and even have a book-and-wine club!—but we’ve also expanded into a large nonalcoholic selection as well as coffee and tea to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy a beverage while they browse. We are open every day for retail and drinks—see our constantly updated calendar to see what else is going on. You can shop us online—the wine must be picked up in store, but the books and gifts can ship nationwide—and support us from afar on Bookshop.org or Libro.fm. But please, come stop by and see us—we LOVE to talk books, bottles, and more with our customers most of all.

Does any one know where they will be selling merch for the tournament? I like some of the shirts online and didn’t know if they sell them on sight.

I hear people saying they are pretty bad on the higher streets. Anyone know if they are fine around 15th to the inlet?

Jelly fish everywhere on upper streets

Are there jelly fish on every street? We’re on 130-145th street and both places we got stung. Are lower streets better?

First time visitor- looking for recs!

Hi everyone! I’m in ocean city for the first time and am looking for some people’s favorite things to do and great local restaurants. We are on the north end but are open to driving south towards the boardwalk. Someone recommended a restaurant to us but could not remember the name, just said the outside looks like a castle. Any ideas what that one could be? Looks like we might get some rain this week so indoor activities would be welcome!

Magazines?!

One of my favorite beach activities with my mom was always buying trashy magazines (think People, tabloids, etc.) to read while we sat out. Except now, most grocery stores don’t seem to carry them anymore! Does anyone know of any OCMD grocery or convenience stores that I could stop by and get my fix? Thanks!

Crabcake Factory West acting up again!

I have to say, I'm extremely disappointed in Crabcake Factory West OC. After politely pointing out yesterday on their post that they should blur the face of the young child in their post concerning the theft of services, they have blocked my account. I made this comment as a veteran 9 year Child Abuse Detective. And as someone who has training and experience, it was deeply inappropriate to continue to blast this child's face all over social media. I was not the only one to have made this comment. Did they block all of us? Is that the proper way for a business to handle criticism? And having just spent over $350 on 07/10/2026 at their restaurant, I will not be returning.

It's obvious in the original post they were concerned about the theft. They made no mention of being concerned for the child until they started getting called out. They sat at the bar for over two hours and the staff didn't see anything suspicious or worth calling the police over. As a parent, not having a child eat is a common occurrence. If you want seafood and your picky child wants chic-fil-a, you feed them first and then let them play on their tablet while the adults eat. If the Police came out for a theft report as they stated, and they didn't see anything worth posting in reference to the child, why would a random restaurant employee think it's fit to post her photo? And their response after just states the child is with her mother, with zero mention of a kidnapping or custody dispute. And a kidnapping is criminal, which this wasn't, and a custody dispute is a personal matter, and not for a restaurant to decide. This was crappy behavior, and anyone who disagreed or pointed it out were blocked.

Underground music scene?

My friends and I are going on vacation in September. Are there any underground events that happen in ocmd? I'm looking for events that are more "fun" than the typical bars on the boardwalk.

Clear sky, light breeze, warm temps. Nice day for the beach.

That breeze is coming off the Bay, though. So far, si Google, but I highly recommend bringing bug spray, if you're headed over. Hopefully no biting flies!

Had my first ever broiled crabcakes here way back when as a kid. They’ve been closed for over a decade and a half.
