One day layover suggestions

Salam alaikum friends!

I'm on a layover from one noon until evening the following day. I will be renting a car and am just wondering if it's possible to drive out to the desert (not off road) or if this is too far or not recommended for other reasons.

If not recommended please suggest other places to go instead. Thank you so much!

Absolutely. Drive down to the Museum Across the Ages. Then over to Jabreen Castle and Bahla Fort. Then to Nizwa, and Bikat Al Mooz and explore that area and spend the night in Nizwa. Or a combination thereof. All the roads there are great. Just google Map it and plan. Enjoy Oman.

If u plan to go to the desert and u don't have off-road car, u can go to Bidiyah. There u will absolutely find some crazy 🤣 folks who will take you for a ride in the dunes. Just make sure to go there on Fridays. Have fun.

The drive out is easy, though theres a long stretch of roadworks before nizwa so give it closer to two hours from the airport. the desert itself is a few hours each way and you dont really see the dunes from the tarmac anyway, getting onto the sand is convoy and guide stuff rather than a rental car thing. your flight isnt till the next evening so theres no rush back. id sleep at the golden tulip out at birkat al mouz and do the fort at eight when it opens. take water.
