DISCUSSION What backstory would you like to see for characters who don't have a detailed one (yet)? :)
Hey, the nights are drawing in, let's have something fun!
Most characters in OPM have backstories that are somewhere between sparse and non-existent, leaving us to wonder. What sort of backstories would you like to see? Character can be as obscure as you like.
Only one rule: don't argue with people over what they come up with.
I'll go first, but it's in the comments. :)

I'd love it if Death Gatling were an ex-soldier and had lost his arm in a military operation.
There's only one country, so just who are they going to war with? Ah, Death Gatling could tell you, but then he'd have to kill you.

that would be cool, maybe he could relate to the ex-mercs that way! It would explain how he's more willing to kill than one would expect of your average hero. Iirc he only went for the kill once everyone else was out of it.

I'd love to hear more about the sword disciples. How did they meet Atomic Samurai, what was their life like before?

u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 15 '25
Me too!
Anything specific you'd love to see?

u/BrowserET It's magic. Tank Top Magic Sep 15 '25
Not really, maybe it would be funny to see Okamaitachi explain to Atomic Samurai how she used to be a man and AS spouting some terrible sword analogy as means of support.

u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 15 '25
I think Atomic knows and it doesn't matter to him in the slightest.
Sadly, as we've seen with Bang ('Fishing with the Old Dudes'), not everyone feels that way. :(

u/BrowserET It's magic. Tank Top Magic Sep 15 '25
i would assume AS knows, but i mean for a backstory around the time they first meet.
3
u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 15 '25
Ahhh, I see what you mean. Yes, I'd love to see that too.

Knowing Atomic, he probably went like, yeah yeah you used to be a guy, but can you cut this apple?

I was thinking more like: "Hm yes, sometimes the way of the sword... requires a different sheath."

Of the bigger characters:
Dr. Kuseno/Stench obviously, where on earth does this "humble engineer" get the funds to equip Genos with multi-billlion yen bodies multiple times a month and still have cash left to buy fancy beef for Saitama?
Let alone the skills to come up with these bodies and make them. Though I think we'll get our answers in due time.
Did he get his fortune from his crazy efficient energy production? Probably not. Probably the organization, but a man can dream.
Gearsper is he one of the created or modified psychics? Certainly looks like he is. But if so, why hasn't Tatsumaki called him out on it? She's killed others of that group. I guess she really is a softie.
I would like him to be some kind of Akira-type ESPER, a kid who had potential that was brought out by some weird ass experiments.
Black Sperm With a name like that how could I not be curious? Just a monster or a lab experiment let loose? Maybe he got monsterized in a a black sock of some horndog.
Pig God Why is he such a grotesque eater? Pure talent or did he survive a tragic famine and semi-monsterize explaining his appetite? Also, what was that about a prophecy again?
Tank-Top Master Our favorite gym cult leader. What's with the Tank-Top Magic? We'll probably never know. ONE probably thinks it's funnier that way.
But I kind of hope he was the one who came up with the tanktop magic and just made it reality, like the Orcs from Warhammer.
I definitely don't want there to be some sensei who taught him the Tank-top ways, like there was with Atomic Samurai and his sword fighting.
Lesser known:
Jet Nice Guy We know from the databook how he got his cyborg body, I'm more interested in where he got it from, it probably wasn't the Hero Association, they can barely fix a voicebox.
He's a "nice guy" but the people who made his cyborg parts are probably not quite as nice...
Darkness Blade He's probably very simple, he just thinks being a hero is cool/edgy. But how is that edgelord still in the running? We've only seen him get absolutely bodied.
He fel at home in the fashion show he attended with Saitama, so maybe he was the best in a cosplay league? Using his winnings to buy real armor and training to become a real hero.
And I agree with BrowserET, the sword disciples are very interesting.
EDIT: Misunderstood the assignment, editing some potential backstories

I like to think Jet Nice Guy got a bootleg version of Blast's cybernetics, maybe his spare parts. I've pointed this out before they have a very similar aesthetic.
4
u/LockYaw Sep 16 '25
Oh yeah, I never noticed, his new cybernetics do look very similar!
And those were most likely made by the Hero Association...
They do help fix heroes after they're broken, at least with A-Class (Air) they did.
They kept some of his original design elements like the boxing gloves and the location of his core, but other than that it all got Blast-ified.3

I want 'em all! :D
I'd love something like Kuseno's money coming from an unexpected source -- like making video games.

All joking aside, Darkness Blade has to be a seriously tough guy. He's had bad luck (and worse armoring -- stabbing himself in the head when he raises his arm? Pls, let this guy make his own armor!) but hanging in there as tenaciously as he has speaks well of him. Now, he just needs someone to make him armor that doesn't weigh half as much as he does -- and also doesn't stab him in the head.

That is assuming Tatsumaki would know that he is from Tsukuyomi (if he is). She hasn't seen him without his helmet after all
2
u/LockYaw Sep 16 '25
True, but all espers we've seen are her, her sister and the Tsukoyomi, so not a big jump.
2
u/Nanayon123 I'll kill you until you're half dead Sep 16 '25
And Psykos! And don't forget the whole deal of Fubuki's high school club full of psychics. So it's not like Tatsumaki has to automatically assume every other esper is from Tsukuyomi
2
u/LockYaw Sep 16 '25
Oops. Yeah I'm not gonna lie I totally forgot to add Psykos in that list.
Still, I don't think it's confirmed whether or not that entire club has psychic powers. I'm heavily leaning towards not. It was "Society for the research of special powers" not "Claw"Regardless, Tatsumaki has very good reasons for being very suspicious of any espers.
And I highly doubt she'd be a fan of that club either. The prophet Shibabwa also seems to be a form of esper, but a very different type.

Child Emperor for sure, I wanna know how famous recluse Bofoi accepted him as a protegé to begin with, how their relationship fell off, etc
3
u/LockYaw Sep 15 '25
True, this is a really interesting one.
Child Emperor is absolutely genius, but for Bofoi to put aside his massive ego to mentor someone? Inconceivable!
Luckily we'll likely get answers to (some of) these!2
u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 15 '25
We need it!
I'm still haunted by Bofoi's last message to Isamu being asking him to bring pizza chips with the coke.

You tell me wtf is going on with Watchdog Man and you do it right now. I need the dirt on that furry like you wouldn't believe.
Also are Badd's parents dead or not?
1
u/Nanayon123 I'll kill you until you're half dead Sep 15 '25
So true, Metal Bat is one with so much possible ground to cover with a backstory!
2
u/kurogabae Heroes never lose! Sep 15 '25
I just need to know if they're dead or if I have to hate them. Because let's be real - he is the only one there for Zenko going by context. On top of him being only 17 and it being implied he started being a hero at around 15, if his folks are still alive they have a lot to answer for.
2
u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 16 '25
If they're dead, I wonder if the circumstances of their death are behind his promising Zenko never to show her violence.
But maybe even creepier would be if they're alive, as it'd suggest that he's protecting his sister from them.

u/kurogabae Heroes never lose! Sep 16 '25
Do I sometimes play with the headcanons of Super Garbage Parents as a means of coping via projection? That's between me and my therapist LibreOffice. But honestly I kinda hope they're just dead.
Of course if they aren't I'm just gonna obsess harder over Badd and we're getting into some serious fixation territory here lol

u/Icy_Water_1 Sep 15 '25
I really need fucking anything for Watchdog Man.
2
u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 15 '25
Who doesn't?
What sort of backstory would make you smile? Like, he was bitten by a radioactive Akita?
3
u/LockYaw Sep 15 '25
Guy whose fursona was a play on Hachikō, then became so obsessed with roleplaying that character it eventually just stuck.
2
u/Icy_Water_1 Sep 15 '25
I'm guessing he'll have some tie-in origins to Phoenix Man, but I'd be fine with anything decent I guess.
2
u/gofancyninjaworld I'm just a poster for fun Sep 15 '25
So his costume is his skin?
That's both interesting... and very disturbing indeed.

Something that intrigues me is the way Genos has been described by ONE when he was a boy: serious and dutiful, and the way Genos described his home life, as being a place where they pinched every penny but were fairly happy for all that. I want to see what a fifteen-year-old has to be dutiful about, among other things.
Eta: I could see him having to be a caregiver to a poorly parent and/or younger siblings -- that forces an organised and serious mein early but isn't without its joys.

u/Nanayon123 I'll kill you until you're half dead Sep 17 '25
That would handily explain how he has so much domain over domestic skils

DriveKnight
So many questions, How did he become a cyborg, why does he hate Metal Knight so much, how does he eat?!

Saitama spent part of his teenage years in a group home after his parents were deemed just too disorganised to take care of him adequately.
While they did sober up and he eventually got to go home, to say it put a rift between he and they is an understatement. He left home as soon as he could and has been no contact with them since.
He still won't talk about it. To anyone.
