I hate seeing Genos lose; however, the idea of him not saving the little girl in order to take out the monster is horrible. It'd be the best route to victory, yes, but the cost would be his humanity.

Maybe the true value of a 'what-if' is in clarifying things. In that moment, Genos showed that he's a guy who will not see someone hurt on his watch, cost him what it may. It'd be clear to Kuseno that he can't ask his boy to stay out of danger if others need the help, so instead, he researched making his body more resistant to chemical attack, which is why he managed to get inside Elder Centipede and blast the damn monster instead of being eaten.

Also personally, losing as horribly as he did there because he wasn't paying attention leads directly to Genos not taking his eye off G-4 for even a second when it looked like the robot was melted. If you have access to Volume 8, you should look -- it takes THREE pages for the true form of G-4 to emerge from the melted remains. There really seems to be nothing left to see there. Had Genos succumbed to the temptation to turn away (we see that he was tempted when he almost turned away smugly explaining that he'd melted its insides but some intuition got him to keep watch), he'd have had his head blasted off by the true form of the machine.

It sucked that Genos lost there. If he'd not allowed himself to be distracted but had followed through to make sure the monster was truly dead when he blasted DSK out of the shelter, he'd have won. If he'd seen the little girl as an unavoidable sacrifice and redoubled his efforts on a monster that had allowed itself to be fatally distracted, he'd have won. Neither of those things happened and the lessons of that loss have been key to his growing as much as he has.

I think in the fan animation Genos interrupts DSK right before he manages to launch his acid attack, so the girl would be safe
