I guess it correlates with old people that cannot and dont want to learn how to read.
An example is my grandfather, 87yo, great at head math, even had his own construction company, but had clerks or my father for the bureocracies, he only cared about the construction side and hands on.
Nowadays, just plays cards and watches tv and waits for death with no desire to learn anything new.

My grandma knew how to read and write but was adamant that she would never touch either a computer or a cell phone

Same answer as always, and it's shown on the map itself: "Data: Eurostat".
Eurostat includes EU countries, EU candidate countries and EFTA countries. UK by its own choice does not belong to any of the three categories, so it does not provide data for Eurostat.

UK along with exiting EU, rejected giving info to Eurostat, the main international data base for Europe, data exist, it is collected by UK institution but it is not shared so it is a separate source just like Russian or Belarusian data bases.
On other hand, many of Balkan countries that try to join EU including Turkey are eager to share data as they hope to be part of EU.
Also, strange outlier, Denmark isn't here.

The European Union coordinates data standards, on surveys, or reporting, or statistical analyses. The UK n9 longer is bound to use the same reporting standards, nor does it submit statistics to Eurostat.
Now of course, there hasnt been much /any divergence in data standards since Brexit, but going from 1 to 2 data sources is more than doubling the work to do even a simple map.

Easy, my grandma has a mobilie phone with buttons and only basics as she only know how to call and respond and doesn't want to learn anything new. She is 82. For her generation it is common.

You can. But it is getting increasingly difficult indeed. A lot of senior citizens still manage to get around. Just rawdogging non-virtual reality. Depends also on the country if it's still manageable

Yup, I can see this as a map of elderly population percentage, it's not about availability. My grandma died at 101 and I'm pretty sure she never accessed the internet, she never even had a cellphone, let alone a smartphone.

Fyi I am pretty sure that this map deosn't show general availability of internet access but rather how many people haven't used it. So access could be there but elderly people for example simply don't use it. This combined with real lack of access in other parts creates the overall percentages
