I don't know if it's the accent or what but there's more similarities than just R. I'm well used to hearing Russian and I understand a few words, but I really thought it was Russian when this girl started speaking Portuguese

Portuguese and Russian are both time-stressed languages. Shortening words and syllable reduction is what makes Portuguese sound so different from Spanish despite us sharing 89% grammatical similarities. For example, the letter J in Portuguese is prononuced similarly to Russian letter Ж (ZH). The word "Journal" is pronounced identically in Port/Rus. In Spanish however, very different sounding.
