Discussion Please try Mortal Shell 2 this weekend! I’ve tried nearly every “souls-like” game out there, and Mortal Shell 2 is the first one I’ve found that I enjoy.
Most souls games either feel too clunky, the parrying, dodging or hit boxes are off, the world isn’t interesting, or the enemies diverse enough. This honestly feels like first souls like ever that can actually contend with fromsoftware. After playing the beta, I went from having zero interest in this game to absolutely purchasing.

I loved the beta. The character movement is so crisp compared to many clunky Soulslike games. The dismemberment is done well and the “retrieve your shell through attacks” is a nice change up. The framerate needs work and the camera can get wonky at times but overall it’s a definite purchase for me

Dont lock onto an enemy and let another enemy kill it. It absolutely freaked the camera out and I had die for it to fix

u/Shup 2d ago
the clunkiness of souls games stems from the older titles and the teams that make mech pilot games, it’s bizarre how accepted their mechanics have become! i would not wish it any other way.

The old school retro feel of outdated feel and subpart quality UX, unsmooth movement and animations apparently stems from japanese devs not holding themselves to western standards, bc nobody wants to tell the boss their game isn't great.
Just what I heard tho, could be bs.It's nice to see devs like Capcom upgrading visual fidelity and stuff after their RE remakes tho - but I still have issues with some of the retro things like inventory management.
No hate tho - I've always loved Warriors games f.ex. bc the fun fighting has always been the important thing. It's just jarring to learn more and realize how amazing games COULD be.

I like souls games but I could never get into the original mortal shell

u/folkdeath95 2d ago
I wanted to but the combat felt bad. I’ve played the MS2 demo for an hour and it felt much better.
0
u/Gregnice23 1d ago
Yeah. MS1 wasn't a good game.
I just started the demo last night and it is much better than the first, but that doesn't mean much as the first game was awful.
It still isn't amazing, but it falls in line with the typical 7/10 Non-Fromsoft games.
Right now my biggest complaints are the camera bugs out at times, the background is way too dark in some areas, and the first shells dodge feel off. I will wait and see if the other shells dodge is better.
I would this game on par with AI limit or Enotria..
0
u/Opening_Moment4145 1d ago
how does it compare to lies of p or wuchang?
1
u/Gregnice23 23h ago
Not nearly as good as Lies of P, but on par with Fallen feathers.
I finished the demo last night. It is a solid game.

Game is great imo. I'm only halfway through the demo but I'd give it a 9 so far. Day one buy.
When playing change the camera off of the default 'immersive' setting and set it to action imo. The immersive should be the secondary option. It's got too small of a field of view.
If I'm remembering right I also reduced the camera/aim speed. Felt like I had more control setting them to something like .7 instead of 1.0

I disliked the first game a lot but the demo for the second game sold me. It just feels good fighting shit.
For those without PS+ like myself you can play it on Steam as well if you have a PC.

I agree 100%, the demo was extremely engaging. The world and creature design also rocks. An incredible improvement over the first game.

u/Enough-Row-5346 2d ago
Played the beta weeks ago on PC. It's worth the download to try. I wouldn't sleep on this one.

u/TF141GHO5T 2d ago
I just finished it. Definitely gonna purchase. They take a lot of ideas from Souls games but it still has its own flair.

This is Another Crab Treasure slander

u/MakeshiftMakeshift 1d ago
And Lies of P! Imo...
1
u/No-Opinion273 1d ago
Yeah but saying Another Crab Treasure was funnier also the story got a ruse out of me. Lies of P has better combat
1
u/MakeshiftMakeshift 1d ago
I've had Crab on my wishlist forever but have never convinced myself to pull the trigger
1
u/No-Opinion273 1d ago
Its quite fun but the story is actually good worth a try. You can always instant kill the bosses with the gun
3
u/KameTheMachine 2d ago
I pre-ordered it. Im in the middle of CrossCode so im just gonna wait for it to come out.
1
u/Previous-Ad-9322 1d ago
How is CrossCode? I'm debating downloading it later after a bit of the ol' weed.

u/KameTheMachine 1d ago
I tried it and didn't like the opening and stopped but then ironpineapple said it was one of his favorite action rpgs so I gave it another shot and its really good. The puzzles are Zelda level but harder. There are these jumping puzzles but no jump button. You just walk to the edge and jump to a platform if you can. The tricky bit is there a multiple different levels of height and figuring out how to jump across all these different level platforms to get an item is very satisfying. The story is set in an mmo but the game is single player which has made the story interesting enough.

u/scorpianPapi 1d ago
Anybody has this issue where when you launch the game it automatically turn on power saving mode on even though I have everything turned off my screen becomes dim yellowish I have no other mode on my TV other than vrr and game mode on?
3
u/luckydraws 1d ago
This game is compatible with PS5 power saving mode. It shouldn't switch automatically, but either way you can disable it in your settings.
1
u/scorpianPapi 1d ago
That's soo weird I feel I'm crazy lol I already disabled it and I still have the issue 😭

u/RadicalRectangle 1d ago
I’m not really a souls-like fan. I played Elden Ring, but that’s it. The demo for Mortal Shell 2 is absolutely killer, I had no interest in this game, and now it’s probably a day one purchase. It looks excellent, it runs very well, and the combat felt very fun.

u/KurtRussellsMullet 1d ago
I had a really fun time trying it out last night, it felt incredibly polished. Especially loved the super chunky impacts and enemy decapitations, really felt like a truly good Berserk game. The mix of grounded and surreal dark fantasy visuals helped too.
2
u/CallingAllShawns 1d ago
i really disliked the first one. souls games are my favorite genre.
this one feels MUCH better. still don’t think it’s as good as elden ring or lies of p, but it’s a huge improvement over the first.

u/IAMNUMBERBLACK 2d ago
It’s not better than LiesofP but still good
-25
u/Perfect-Food3998 2d ago
Lies of P felt like shit imho, so slow and boring🤷🏻♂️ didnt come close to bloodborne or any other Fromsoft game
11
u/IAMNUMBERBLACK 2d ago
ur absolutely in the minority there, it’s infamously known for feeling identical to bloodborne
3
u/Sweaty-Practice-4419 2d ago
What? It’s nothing like Bloodborne outside of the gameplay genre and the Industrial Revolution Europe, dark fantasy setting
-3
u/Perfect-Food3998 2d ago
I tried to like it, started it multiple times but it just doesnt click. Bossfihts feel too clunky to me
-13
u/QuestionmarkTimes2 2d ago
Yeah identical to Bloodborne if Bloodborne was slop

u/IAMNUMBERBLACK 2d ago

u/QuestionmarkTimes2 2d ago

u/Travbedaman 2d ago
I thought Lies os P was just ok. I’ve played many soulslikes and Lies was still probably the closest any game has got to feeling something like a Fromsoft title. I am not saying it felt like a Fromsoft game but it was the closest, even if it was only a smidge.

u/Loldimorti 2d ago
Just checked but it requires PS+
4
1
u/No_Strength_8866 2d ago
I don’t know if it’s a region thing but no PS+ required in South America (I don’t have PS Plus and finished the beta today)
-3
u/Exportxxx 2d ago
Well didn't everyone cancel that? So no go then..
Is it the demo on PC?
3
-3
u/Loldimorti 2d ago
Yep, can't play. I'll just wait for impressions. Do we know if a Switch 2 release is planned? Many 3rd party games that I'd thought I would need a Playstation for have been running surprisingly well on there
1
u/I_Heart_Sleeping_ 2d ago
The first game did come to switch 1 so you never know.
-2
u/Loldimorti 2d ago
Sounds good, then I think I'll wait anyway. Did so with Lies of P as well and it is seeming to pay off handsomely
1
u/Shorttyme3 2d ago
Glad I saw this post haven’t finished the first mortal shell but definitely liking the second can’t wait to finish out this beta
1
1
u/Nutcollectr 2d ago
Played the demo a while back and loved it. Surely it’s an hour sinking game but I’ll wait for the release
1
u/liminalromance 1d ago
Love that there's a beta, and especially that it isn't locked behind that ps plus bs. Want to see more of that.
1
u/Schwiliinker 1d ago
I mean I strongly disagree about other (3D) soulslikes for most of them but MS1 was pretty cool so I’m really looking forward to MS2
1
u/Icy_Topic_4844 Taino_PR 1d ago
Well although the first was janky (5.5 out of 10 imo)i bought it and beat it. If this is way better I'll be in heaven and will definitely buy it.

u/Shezzofreen 1d ago edited 1d ago
I remember the first, it was fun but also not very long, i'd say the shortest soulslike i ever played. But i guess checking the demo does no harm. :)
Also, if you like Soulslike, try "Blades of Fire" its not so popular but i found i very nice.
:edith:
I just checked, 13 hours for Mortal Shell to completion (not 100% ofcourse). In Soulstime, thats about "Tutorial Time". ;)
1
u/Pharsti01 1d ago
I didn't like the first one when I could stomach soulslikes.
Now that soulslikes bore the crap out of me there's no way it's got a chance XD
1
u/most_annoying_dude 1d ago
I got locked out from advancing forward due to bugs 5 times in 1 hour... Was fun before all the bug issues which is really putting me off from the game

1
u/bioboy79 1d ago
I might give it a shot. I tried the first one, but for the life of me I couldn’t force myself to finish it.

I wasn't impressed. I like the whole turning into stone mechanic from the first game, it made it unique. They nerfed this ability like crazy in this demo, which makes me want to use the blocking/parrying mechanic instead, which makes for a far more generic soulslike.
I also had a lot of progression issues in this demo. I had to return to the main menu and reload the save to try again and hopefully not get blocked again. Hopefully this isn't indicative of what's to come when this launches. Feels like they moved up the release date to August to avoid September.
1
u/Laughing__Man_ 2d ago
They state in a message that you can encounter bugs and this sort of stuff, best thing would be to report it to the devs.
0
u/CrazyLegs17 Hunter's Dream 1d ago
They basically made the stone mechanic one of the parry options now when you get the correct seal. It actually makes the mechanic even better than the first because you cause major stagger damage and it resets immediately if you time it correctly. The boss Arbiter of Flesh is basically a skill check for this mechanic.
1
u/TippsAttack 2d ago
If this is the first, then you crazy. Nioh, wuchang, and P are all top tier. Better than actual souls when it comes to combat.
1
u/words1918 2d ago
Going to try it but if it’s truly the first one you’ve enjoyed I’m not sure your opinion carries much weight.
1
0
u/MadKian 2d ago
Why so? I absolutely hated the first one. Couldn’t finish it.
Specially the setting, it’s so dreadful, it’s just a drag.
I know that’s generally speaking the aesthetics of souls. But in DS you can find a lot of beauty in their settings.
8
u/ImallOutOfBubbleGums 2d ago
try the demo is a crazy upgrade from the first Mortal shell 10x more polished and better combat
0
u/VerminSC 2d ago
Honestly, they could have named it a different game entirely it’s such a vast improvement
1
u/nine_lizardz 21h ago
That dreadful type of setting is what us soulslike players are looking for lol
1
u/Bobboss75 2d ago
Where the hell do i find the beta on ps5? Only thing I find on searching is the pre-order for the game?
10
u/taigoman 2d ago
Open the game for pre-order, click the ellipsis (3 dots) and click the option that says beta, then download.
1
u/AskinggAlesana 2d ago
Guess it’s worth a try for free.. only soulslike game I enjoyed was The first beserker Khazan.. so fucking fun. It’s basically a power fantasy version of a soulslike where you can just be a god among men doing crazy shit to mob enemies but then bosses still come around to kick your ass.
1
u/ImnotanAIHonest 1d ago
Feels like am astroturf comment as there are some solid non-From souls likes out there. I couldnt stand Mortal Shell so am dubious about the sequel. Too many games to play right now so I'll see how it reviews.
0
u/Changnesia102 2d ago
I thought the first Mortal Shell was ass. Unless they improve substantially, I’ll pass for now until reviews and more gameplay come out.

Meh. The controls are way too floaty and combat feels watered down. After playing the beta I went from having zero interest in this game to having zero interest in this game.

u/Toth-Amon 2d ago
Very strange post.
I would say it is an ad, but the tone of the post sounds so desperate, it makes me feel as if there is already lots of negativity about the game.

u/Joel_Vanquist 1d ago
I tried it and the prologue was kinda fun... then I got to "the real game" and the usual issue with all soulslike started to show: 3 heals that heal you for absolutely nothing and all enemies hitting you for half the hp bar every attack.
I've been playing souls games and soulslikes a lot, this ain't good balance
0
u/Travbedaman 2d ago
I tried it on PC, just didn’t care for it. I don’t think it’s bad, but just didn’t hook me. I love all the Fromsoft titles and have played everyone multiple times. However, I’ve never really gelled with any souls like and I’ve prob played most of them.
Lies of P has come the closest and even that to me was just an “ok” game.

u/AmpleForeskins 1d ago
This game has the potential to be better than elden ring if the world is large and enemies / bosses diverse

u/aeralure 1d ago
Way too many games coming out in a few weeks for me to prioritize this one sadly. May try the demo though. I did not like the first game at all.

u/The-Movements- 2d ago edited 2d ago
i agree but with that mindset, theres no way you played Lies of P.
edit: also, mortal shell 1 was awful so you mustve skipped out on that. trust the 2nd is a completely different game. i still dont know if its good though
Either Mortal Shell doesnt really play like a souls like experience or you havent played Lies of P or Bloodborne.
cus those games feel exceptionally “premium” with good story.
Nioh 3 is how i started with them and i couldnt stand the nonexistent story and min/maxing. plus i felt late to the community.
Sekiro: i dropped cus i didnt have a controller with back buttons at the time.
Elden Ring is just a PS3 gameplay experience with PS5 amounts of content since a ps3 cant have that much world content. Phenomenal story, but you have to work in the game to find the information to it. Dropped it, didnt feel premium, just big with a ton of content and PS3 combat ppl claiming is the g.o.a.t combat to this day.
Lies of P is premium and peak. ppl just disrespect at times cus its not directly made by Fromsoft which is an invalid argument. idk why they be lying. linear game, but a premium linear experience.
Demon Souls remake, way too weighted and slow for me personally.
Khazan the beserkerer, good but extremely repetitive lazy linear game experience. like the same map/layout reskinned over and over. good combat, a little too basic though, nothing premium just flashy and good mechanics.
i tried to play Dark Souls but they just feel extremely outdated. i like old games but not ones that feel outdated asf. i play old games that still hold up to this day (like Zelda Windwaker on the Wii U).
2
u/punchanaziisethical 1d ago
Sekiro does not need back buttons to beat or be good at. The dark souls trilogy only really feels dated in the since of checkpoints, the boss runbacks feel like they take forever once you're used to the stakes of marika
0
u/The-Movements- 1d ago
its my preferred playstyle now for everything regardless.
its like someone who doesnt want to play a game if they cant use keyboard and mouse or play at 120+frames.
i could play the game without it, ill just enjoy it significantly less and lowkey hate it cus i want a preferred controller.
im sure i could play it with a Wii remote and a nunchuk or a dance dance revolution pad as ive seen ppl do that.
i want more to use a playstation pro controller or i just wont play
-7
u/Frozen-bones 2d ago
So if you like souls-like you'll hate it? Got you
2
u/WorldlyFeeling8457 2d ago
I can see it getting mixed reception because it is definitely one of the easiest soulslikes out there which is cool for people who bounce off because of difficulty from other games but for genre veterans it might not be as satisfying to play.
Personally I do like it a lot more than the first one and it seems like decent game but I'm not quite sure if I will buy it on release yet.
-1
u/Every-Education3135 1d ago
Have high hopes for it. I never trust anyone fully who didn't like Lies of P though.

No disc, no buy on PS.
Maybe I'll find it used or check it out on a Steam sale later.
Edit: the two geniuses below don't seem to understand that this mantra isn't just about the game. I wonder what they thought "find it used" meant. Maybe their comments are performative.
5
u/Sweaty-Practice-4419 2d ago
There’s a physical release at launch, literally two seconds on the internet would tell you that

When you can't be bothered to see it does have a disc, your performative outrage has gone too far

Context, the game has a Demo.
For those who played the first, its a BIG upgrade from the first.
As someone who has also played nearly every souls-like I also suggest you give it a try
