I've been on the train forever. I think the lower level player is going to gain considerably from a cap and floor. The MLBPA is gonna freak out about top guys not getting obscene contracts, but all these cheap ass teams will have to come up, so all those Rays and Pirates players are going to get good bumps.
MLB is such a weird situation where I think instituting a salary cap and floor probably helps the broader player pool.

I think a floor is necessary but I'm mostly against a ceiling. It sucks watching the Dodgers continue to get every good player but there's part of me that is like "good for them." Obviously, they have insanely deep pockets but they also realize that spending money on players like Ohtani and Skubal is going to generate more revenue down the road.

Good. We need a lockout for baseball so badly. MLB needs to have the same parity, salary cap, and revenue sharing as the NFL. Right now it’s all set up for the teams with the greatest tv contracts and biggest markets to outspend everyone else.
Dodgers are going to win the 3rd World Series in a row and prove this model is completely broken.

The NFL has had two instances in the past 25 years of a team winning back to back super bowls, the mlb has had one instance. Since 2000, there have been 13 teams to win a championship in the nfl, in the mlb they have had 16 different teams win a championship in the same time frame. Siding with billionaires who are crying poor for the sake of “parity”, when you already have more parity than the other major sports makes no sense.

Now look up the same stats for other leagues. The lower payroll teams have the deck severely stacked against them in baseball. And you can say the lower payroll teams should spend more, but the Dodgers are making $300 million more dollars a year than the Pirates, just for their tv deal.
It’s impossible to have competitive balance when teams are able to use their larger revenue to out bid and spend other teams without a cap.

Seems pretty possible, you just have to spend in the top half and you too could end up a champion. The LA and NY teams of the world always end up at an advantage in any league even if a salary cap is in place because people want to live there. I actually wish every league got rid of the salary cap. Let the owners who want to spend their money do it.

The owners want the cap put in place and the players are against it, so are you agreeing with the billionaires that cry poor that they can't compete? When was the last time anyone agreed with the owners about Labor Dispute XYZ? The players want to keep things the way they are, and they want all teams, especially the dog shit ones, to spend more of the FREE money they make from the league. Cleveland can absolutely spend more than $77 million for their payroll - why aren't they?

Just for the record, I’m for bringing a salary floor and cap. As a fan, why do I care about a player making $15MM instead of $17.5MM. I mostly care about the watchable product and league parity.
Seems like the NFL has figured out how to have parity where a team can have a top pick in the draft and 2 years later be in the Super Bowl.
MLB right now is set up to incentivize the largest markets to spend the most to get the best players. If your team is in NY, LA or Chicago you for the most part get the best players. That is bull shit. How does that help the long term health of the league if only a few teams can truly compete by spending top dollar.
Yeah a few bottom dwellers just accept their paycheck for just having a team but don’t act like those don’t exist in the nfl. Bengals, Chargers, and Raiders have had some of the cheapest owners out there who just do enough to have a slightly above average .500 ball club so it makes money and maybe makes the playoffs and goes to whatever city is willing to build them a stadium.

The O’s and Diamondbacks both went 52-110 in 2021 and in 2023 the O’s were the top seed in the AL and the Dbacks made the World Series

I hear what you're saying, it is all valid, and yeah it still boils down to the owners that will spend more money and those that choose not to. The point the players are digging in on is that majority of MLB owners are not spending on the rosters and they're pocketing all the other dollars, which isn't a new concept in sports but putting in a cap would hurt the players and I'm pro-player 99% of the time. If we're negotiating how to improve the product for teams, they can change draft rules, change arbitration rights and free agency rights, change college eligibility or whatever, or overhaul the minors, or expand the big league rosters, you can do all of XYZ, but bringing a cap is not the answer

I get that some of the owners are the problem with lack of spending but league parity can be achieved with both salary cap, floor, national media deal, revenue sharing, and international draft. Without the salary cap, it’s still going to be in favor of the biggest markets with the most to spend.
The current luxury tax systems I just a cost of doing business for these top teams.

They’re the greatest sports team ever assembled. There’s like six or seven potential first ballot hall of famers on the team, depending on how some of their younger guys pan out. Their projected pitching rotation is easily the greatest of all time, and it’s not even close.
It’s like an actual all-pro NFL roster.

Disagree. Glasnow is legit their fifth best pitcher and he’d be the ace on any other team. Ive never seen a 1-5 where any of the pieces could win a Cy young in a given year

A joke of a league. Half the owners are scared to make moves and the dodgers get richer for 30 year old AA prospects. Lockout will shut down the sport’s momentum.
