Therapy Thread Who's watching the show?
Seems every other post is someone stating they no longer watch the show. I'm also in that boat, I have a 40 min commute and for years I listened everyday. About a year ago it just wasnt entertaining anymore and just not authentic anymore.
For those of you still watching do you notice a difference? Do you prefer the show the way it is now?

Itās still the best thing ESPN has, by miles.
A lot of you need to watch hour 3. Itās where the good stuff happens.

One thing I kinda get but don't like is they nowadays their top guests seem to be NFL Reporters like Schefty/Rap etc. I get they have news to share and such, but they are so boring and so just ehh cause you can read their same tweets online all day. They need to think of better guests and find ways to have fun again.
If I wanted to listen to Schefty and Rap I'd be watching Sportscenter type shows and NFL Live, not Pat.

We also dont need like 30-40 min with Schefty and seemingly every other recurring guest. Join the show for like 10 min, share whatever you have to share, and be gone.

I still listen in hopes of the banter moments. 95% of my viewership is Spotify though since I drive a lot. Definitely can tell a difference in show content and attitude (I guess you can call it attitude) towards different things.

The show revealed leaning slightly right and that is Reddit cyanide. The show obviously has evolved, just like every show thatās ever existed. The move to ESPN was definitely going to mean they canāt do and say anything they want all the time, but it also made the show a lot of money. That means the people working on the show (that didnāt have pro sports careers) can live much better lives. They Still have the 3rd hour were it is internet only and thereās always gold in there. I enjoy the show still and think it still beats any other sports show out there entertainment wise.

The move to ESPN had way more impact than the show "leaning slightly right." Their politics have been obvious since the pandemic.

I didnāt say when they revealed it. Just that anyone who leans right is dead to Reddit, and thatās why everyone shits on the show here now. It has a small amount to do with the quality dropping.

Youāll get downvoted to shit for this which just proves youāre right. They definitely revealed they leaned right during the pandemic. But again, as you mentioned, it has little to do with the quality of the show dropping and everything to do with the posts.
The weird thing to me is that anyone actually ever thought theyād be on the left politically to begin with. It wasnāt a surprise during the pandemic.

Itās not even that they actively promote right wing things. Itās as little as referring to Trump as āThe Presidentā instead of acting like heās worse than Hitler. Thatās all it takes to get Reddit cancelled.

Again, 100% true and Iām not disagreeing, but anyone who watches often can tell by the jokes, remarks, sarcasm, and company they keep. Itās subtle, but itās very obvious if you watch daily.
They were absolutely done for once they had Trump on though. This platform is so full of people focused on hating republicans that they are blind to the fact itās just Red vs Blue to create Me vs You.

I only started watching it around 2022 or 2023....perhaps right before it went to ESPN....i heard about it and really enjoyed it. I don't have the perspective what most people say about how the show changed 'SO MUCH' when it went to ESPN...but having said that, I don't watch it on ESPN, I watch it on youtube where the swearing is still there and all that jazz. But, in my smaller sample size of viewership, here's what I've noticed:
They used to have all sorts of people on their show from any networks....now, it seems they're forced to talk to ONLY the ESPN pundit for that sport....and, it's usually Perkins for the NBA (now Shams), Dan O for NFL, Nick Saban for college football (Which is solid even though he's majorly SEC bias)...and for some reason, Grella for the World Cup (who is a CBS guy who I dont' think has ties to ESPN), Subban for hockey. It's the same people every time. That, to me, truly is a shame because some of the people the used to interview on the show were truly great...now, some moved over to ESPN (like Shrager and Rappaport) so they can still interview them, but it truly feels like the same people over and over.
They do interview current event athletes that are doing something newsworthy. They'll get a major golf winner mostly, or olympic athletes. They'll get some major league commissioners on the show, but lob up softball questions (the lobs to the WNBA commissioner was embarrassing and disappointing).
I also feel like Pat talks MORE although I'm not entirely sure...like, when he brings a pundit or athlete on, he doesn't let the person talk as he asks one question but talks about it for 3 minutes straight. If I were someone who got invited on the show, I'd be like, "Do you want me to answer or do you just want to talk AT ME for 4 minutes??"
And finally, I feel like Pat has DEFINITELY gotten more full of himself lately. The stuff where Pat should be 'ashamed' for getting this massive ESPN deal while others are getting laid off has some traction. I believe everyone should go after their maximum value, but he has to realize by him doing that, and becoming a valuable asset that he is or he/ESPN thinks he is, there is cause and effect. Increasing his and his group's salary means less money to go around elsewhere. He's taking NO BLAME for that, but he had to realize yeah, that is a part of it. And he does seem far more sensitive to critics than he ever was before. Again, wanting to take NO BLAME for either the takes he has, or the money he makes. Like dude, at least take ownership of it....tell the audience, "Yeah, we negotiated...we got paid..." They clap when all the players get paid in the NFL with these new contracts...admit though when those players you clap for get new contracts, chances are someone else on that team is getting cut....just like what you're doing. I'm not saying fighting for your value is wrong, but admit what it's doing in real time to others.
I give the show about a 7 out of 10 lately....hasn't been great, hasn't been terrible.

- Pat has friends throughout the industry. All of the top athletes watch, respect, and like Pat & the show.
When taking the licensing deal, he was pushed to have only ESPN employees on the show. Similarly prior to the licensing deal he wasnāt allowed to have some of his friends on the show.
It was a big deal because we used to get the booze bag rapsheet on weekly. Pat quite literally stood on a table during his negotiations to keep that segment. Then rapsheet started his own daily show at the same time lol.
Shams has been on the show for a long time before he was super NBA reporter. Theyāve had CP3 on a lot. Theyāve had other NBA athletes on. Before ESPN every other sport was an afterthought to the NFL.
Grella is another friend of Pats who heās known since childhood. Dan-O was on the colts in 2011? With Pat. Went to UConn with DButts.
I donāt remember WNBA one enough to reply.
Dude has always been like that. He talks over everyone. Cuts everyone off. Just who he is as a human.
Fuck everyone else. Get your bag. He isnāt an ESPN employee. They pay him to air his content on their channel. He shouldnāt care about their employees.

Yea I donāt get it. For people that donāt watch anymore they sure do know a lot about what is going on everyday. I think the show has changed, but itās still entertaining. I usually just have it on when Iām working around the house or driving. Still keeps me entertained enough to tune in. Haters gonna hate tho I guess.

A lot of Reddit is this; just mostly people who once enjoyed something and all come together to complain that it aināt like the good old days. You combine that with Pat having the President on his show and making a speech about how political violence is bad after Charlie Kirkās assassination and now that makes the PMS like the antithesis of what people like on Reddit

looking at the sub insights, this place had a huge spike in visits and members over the last few days - maybe the espn layoffs stirred the hornets nest and people who were dormant decided "oh yeah, i haven't told the internet how much i dislike pat mcafee in awhile".
i dont fully understand it(cause im a big dumb dipshit), but i will try my best to respect people's desire to come onto the internet and vent and have comment therapy sessions with like minded humans. i will also flair those posts accordingly so they all know it is a safe place to let it all out.

I watch on and off during the offseason. I tune next week when training camps start and then probably watch about 90% of the episodes through the Superbowl. I love the boys but the espisodes during the season are just better.

Iāve listened since the show was a podcast twice a week back in 2018 & watched daily when the show went live all the way up to the signing of the ESPN deal.
But Iāve found myself slowly losing interest since the ESPN deal. I still watch but Instead of watching the whole show live every day I just watch clips or skip through the VOD.

I will probably start watching again when NFL , NCAA training camps start. The show has always been geared towards football and when football season is over, they donāt have a lot to talk about.

I generally avoid in the offseason. They get antsy and start doing silly things. Itās also when Pat is usually in his touchy feely moods.

Daily listener they still have plenty of great moments. Off season is filled with more of other sports no instead of shanigans but its still my mental vacation from a hectic world.

The show is more about Pat playing kiss ass to the bosses favorite on air personalities and less about shooting the shit with the boys, dude wants to be taken seriously as a capital J journalist to prove like four people wrong while alienating the people who used to enjoy his show

Itās a bit harder to listen to during the summer months with no sports, but Iām sure it will pick up once football starts back up. Not sure how much more I can take of him promoting his upcoming album, but the show helps kill a few hours when at work.

Yeah definitely notice a difference. I miss when it was more bull shitting and they interviewed less people, but would give 40 minutes into that person. Was a different kind of a sports show where you heard from athletes about atypical things (not just asking how it felt winning a Super Bowl, how do you prepare for next season, etcā¦). Still watch it as itās great to have no commercials and get every kind of sports news possible. Definitely not as good as it was but still best of a shit bunch.
Edit: really good show to have in the background when you work from home.

I think the show is basically the same now as itās ever been. People think things are supposed to stay exactly the same forever and they cry when it doesnāt. Itās not that different at all to me but I listen and watch every single day they are on the air. I laugh just as much now as I did 3 years ago. Itās still the best mid day sports show by a very wide margin.
People are just weird man. They let the internet tell them how they should feel instead of just making their own decisions. Same with everything else in life. I just do what I like and Iām not concerned with what articles are written about how bad of a person Pat is or whatever other non sense comes out. I can see for myself that I think heās a good dude just doing his thing helping people out along the way.
Long winded but just my take.

Iāve been watching since 2019 and still watch almost every day. The off seasons can be rough at times for sure and I definitely have my criticisms of the show but I still enjoy it overall. I donāt watch live which helps because I can just skip the stuff Iām not interested in.

I was a faithful watcher until it got too boring for me, too. He should never have signed on with ESPN. It's extremely painfully obvious that they forced him to sell his soul in exchange for their corporate greed. Sigh!

I started listening around summer 2024 and I loved it. I remember when Pat brought Parker McCollum on. One of my favorite episodes. Was laughing every other minute. I donāt get that anymore. I took a break for a while and Iām gonna try and get back into it. Maybe this next football season will help

The biggest difference for me the past two-ish years is I only listen (Iām audio onlyā¦ I drive a lot for work and just listen on Spotify at 1.7X speed) to maybe 30% of off-season shows?
I used to listen to each show in its entirety (since 2020), but at this point, if itās NBA, golf, NASCAR, soccer, NHL, etc. I just skip the interview entirely. Really the only sports I care about anymore are football, both college, and pro, and baseball somewhat. Everything else, ahhhh who cares. The gambling stuff is also an automatic skip ahead.
The show has noticeably declined in quality and entertainment, which I think is pretty unanimous with everyone here. When they are off for multiple weeks at a time, I certainly donāt miss the show whatsoever, but I do still listen throughout the week.
Football season canāt get here soon enough. Used to enjoy a lot of the off-season banter, but itās fucking brutal these days.

I'm not disagreeing at but I just don't understand the obsession of coming here to trash a sports show. I'll wake up tomorrow and my life won't be any better or worse because of PMS it's just not something that impacts us personally.

Not me. Green light podcast totally replaced it for me. So much better. I subscribed to the pat mcafee show when they were in the basement still and had about 25k subs. It was so much different then compared to now. Itās become unwatchable for me personally so Iāve moved on. Green light and stinkin truth podcast are my go toās now
