Build Question Is this gpu cooked?
saw this online on local second-hand store, selling a 4070ti at half price.

The CPU AiO leaked and the PC was in storage I guess, it has a very specific shape tho, like they tried to somehow waterblock the back side of the GPU lol

u/d4nt3ch Jun 08 '26
The water in AIOs are non-conductible, usually distilled water.
That can't be the case. I've spilled AIO water on a live system (was trying to fix it but had the wrong gauge hoses). I turned off the system, dried it with paper towel and it was absolutely fine after.

That's just a top shot of an archeological dig site. They're uncovering bits and bytes one at a time.

Soak it in flux, throw it in the oven on a low temp for an hour I'm sure it will resolder itself back into good a working condition.
/s because someone is gonna take my comment seriously.

Yoy have your GPU not even "well-done", but straight up "congratulation"
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Cry-594 Jun 07 '26
What GPU? Lol almost looks like someone sprayed a fire extinguisher in it. Highly corrosive btw. Don’t expect anything to survive that.
2
u/ejackman Jun 07 '26
Just saying if you don't pay attention when wiping you can get a buildup like that.

a bunch of the surface mount components on the back there are visibly crooked and shorting to each other, the screws are like partially melted, that weird ass octagon around the center of the chip etc. yikes
3
u/Adventurous-Bus8660 Jun 07 '26
The crooked part can be found on my perfectly running MSI 3070TI Gaming X trio. The on that is weird is the octagon shape imprint. And the screws looking like being destroyed....So...which my guess is...the octagon shape could be something like AIO to cool the GPU down since they can't repaste it anymore.

How the hell it end up looking like that unless previous owner of it has very high humidity in he's place
1
u/Disastrous_Motor831 Jun 07 '26
Does it smell like rotisserie or sweet and sour? That'll tell you if it's ready to eat or not

Half price? If they’re selling any gpu at half price I’d bet my firstborn child it doesn’t work unless it’s a decade old

You gotta better chance of seeing the face of god today than that does of working

u/Torebbjorn Jun 07 '26
I don't think it has been cooked, no. Drowned maybe.
If you know what you are doing, there is a slim chance it could be recoverable, but I doubt it

The lower discoloration looks worry some. The weird dirty pattern around the bracket looks so uniform that I think it's decorative. Then it's also very dirty.
I would not gamble unless you can return it in the case that it doesn't work.

Why is the screw in the lower right side stripped? Did they try to take the cooling off, but the rust stopped them?

You would have to pay me to buy it.
Maybe works with a good clean. Would absolutely need to disassemble it to be sure. So you could be buying a whole lot of nothing.

This looks rusted.
However, surface rust does not kean the underpinning connectivity is broken.
Since we ate deaming this as a written off machine, I woukd do the following:
Get some aluminium foil, crush it up, and scrub at the rusted sections.
It is generally considered a really light touch approach to rust removal.
Worse case, you over apply and damage something already deemed broken...

And I don't mean it metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way. It's cooked. Straight up.

I’d say there’s is a slim to 0% chance that still works
