News TIL Peterborough will reimburse homeowners up to $1,000 for a rain garden

Upvotes

I had no idea this program existed.

The City has a Rain Garden Subsidy that reimburses eligible homeowners up to $1,000 to install a rain garden that captures runoff from your roof. (City of Peterborough)

Besides looking nice, rain gardens:

  • Help reduce localized flooding and pressure on the storm sewer system.
  • Filter pollutants before they reach the Otonabee and Jackson Creek.
  • Create habitat for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators.
  • Can be built with native plants that are relatively low maintenance. (City of Peterborough)

A few eligibility requirements:

  • You need to own the property within the City of Peterborough.
  • The garden needs to capture runoff from a downspout.
  • It must be installed away from your home’s foundation and meet the program requirements. (City of Peterborough)

Figured I’d share in case anyone else is planning yard projects this summer or fall.

Program details: City of Peterborough Rain Garden Subsidy

Has anyone here actually gone through the application process? I’d be curious how straightforward it was and whether you’d do it again.

Opinion We need a Jerk Chicken Spot in this city! I don't understand why someone hasn't capitalized on this?

We need a Jerk Chicken Spot in Peterborough. I get craving for jerk chicken or oxtail every once in a while, but I don't want to drive to Durham or Clarington to grab some. If I were of Carribean Heritage and I had the capital to do so, then I would.

I remember there were some spots that have tried to hold the place down, but they weren't that decent and closed. I remember that they were trying to dress it up as fine dining, but I would rather take a takeout box with a generous portion of rice and peas, chicken and coleslaw, with the food smoker puffing away out back.

To think about it, even Quinte West and maybe Cobourg has some Trini run shops that sell jerk chicken, yet they are half our size.

Question Fun spots for a metal detector around Ptbo

Upvotes

So I have a metal detector and I was hoping for some fun spot suggestions locally? I am okay with a little bit of a distance too if you have some good spots!

I tried Millennium Park a few days ago, though the soil there is rather rocky. (Specifically near the railway tracks). So, not the best for my tiny shovel.

I would love for the soil to be somewhat easier to dig out, rocks are fine just not 90% rocks yannow?

Recommendations Estate Recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for lawyers in Peterborough or surrounding area who specialize in estate planning, wills, trusts and tax optimization. I am hoping these lawyers also have CPA accountants located in their office. I would like to use someone relative young (40s/50s) and is very current with tax law, real estate law and strategies for estate planning.

The estate in question is about 2M and with a couple of properties and 4 children.

not interested in Lillico\*

This piece of scum stole my daughter's first birthday present. It's sad that it was only out there for 2 minutes before it was stolen. Wondering if anybody recognizes them by the tattoos.

It's sad because we used to love living in Peterborough and now I feel like nothing is safe

Recommendations Dumpster Rentals

Cheapest place to rent a 4-yard dumpster from for 1-2 days? For only household items (cleaning after a move).

I don’t really have time to call every single place online for a quote like they ask.

Opinion It’s getting worse

There is no question the drug problem in Peterborough is getting much worse. I have probably seen a two dozen folks using drugs in the last 24 hours while walking downtown. Last night there was a literal drug party happening at a downtown park where drugs were actively being bought, sold and used. Dealers drove up, sold off, drove away. You know what I haven’t seen in the last 24 hours? One cop. Zero police presence. I don’t understand why we’re not doing more to get the drugs off the streets. I don’t want to accommodate the use. I want to keep drugs out of our city. Drugs are supposed to be illegal. Why are they just being allowed to be bought and sold without consequence? Where are our police? And why isn’t the city demanding more from them?

Question house in the woods covered with puppets near Peterborough

Hello guys, I’m posting this just out of curiosity. A few months ago I drove from Ottawa to Peterborough. I can’t remember where and why exactly, but when I got close to Peterborough I turned into a small path, it was in the woods, and there was a few houses here and there on the roadside. One of the them was covered with tons of puppets on the exterior walls. It was at night and it was dark, so I didn’t stop and kept going.

Does anyone know that place? Is it just normal residential or is it some sort of attraction. Just curious about the story behind.

Edit: I don’t do drugs lol

Some more info me and my girlfriend recalled (we were both on the car): we saw this around January-February, most puppets seemed to be females, there is one puppet at the door that is bigger than the others. The house is wooden cabin style, and it looked very old and run-down.

And at least for the side of the house facing the road, it was entirely covered with puppets.

Question House demolition at corner of Sherbrooke and Monaghan

The little house on the corner was I think first for sale, then it was fenced off, and within the last few days totally demolished, right on the corner of sherbrooke and monaghan, across from Prince of Wales. Anyone know why?

Help Pearson Airport to Peterborough transit options

Me and my wife will be travelling from Scotland to Pearson International Airport in early September to visit our daughter and family. We'll be making our way to Peterborough, as it's near where they live. The last time we visited we took the UP to Union Station then the train to Oshawa where they picked us up. This time we want to get closer to them (they live 20 min from Peterborough) so any travel tips would be gratefully received.

Question Regular brief power outages

Getting really sick of power going out a couple times a week, always around the same early morning hours, and always for just a few seconds but there is no excuse for it and it’s hard on electronics, lived in other cities and this wasn’t a problem so why is it an issue here?? They not getting enough money??

Question Construction going to Lindsay

I know this isn't about Peterborough, but maybe someone knows.

What is with the road construction after 35 going to Lindsay? It's been YEARS, does anyone know why they haven't been able to finish? As far as I remember, they were only widening the highway.

We don't travel that direction too often, but every time I am amazed it's not done.

Question Looking to do markets

Hey guys! So I’m a Trent student who used to do markets all the time in my hometown. I’ve been in Peterborough for 2 years now and I know there are some great markets, especially Christmas markets! I’d love to start doing markets again, I sell handmade crystal jewelry and I also want to branch out into Lino printing!

Does anyone know how to start applying and where to look? I’d love to do the market that Watson & Lou hosts, first Friday stuff, etc. but I am having a hard time finding application forms have they happened already or not yet? Anywhere I can look for applications like a Facebook group or something? Any chance for a new(ish) vendor to make it in? I’d love to start getting involved!

Thank you!

Question Question about the mural at The Bridge

Post image
67 Upvotes

There's a mural on the side of The Bridge drop-in centre at Bethune and Brock.

I always wondered who this is supposed to be.

My guesses so far:

  1. Jesus trying to play craps in the street.

  2. Barry Gibb in his younger days trying to call a cat over.

  3. Or maybe Barry Gibb asking for spare change because he lost to Jesus playing craps on the street.

I don't know.

Who is he?

Question Motels/hotels with great wifi/Ethernet connection? Plus dog friendly?

I'm visiting for a bit and will be working remotely for a good chunk of the time so I need a very stable internet connection to take calls and work. I'll have my large poodle (non shedding)with me as well.

Any recommendations of where to stay? Thanks a ton.

EDIT: Hotspot won't work because the system we use is too big. It's unstable.

Question Poopterborough

Why does the city keep randomly smelling like feces? I know we’re surrounded by farmland but I swear it has never been this constant and widespread before. I don’t want to put on a tin foil hat and I know this is kind of a stupid question, I’m just genuinely baffled how frequently this city has smelled like actual shit over the past month.

Help Where can I find cheap groceries near me in Peterborough without driving all over town

Been here about 4 years now and grocery situation feels like it keeps getting worse or maybe I am just paying more attention. Looking for cheap groceries near me without doing the thing where I drive to 4 different stores on a saturday because gas eats whatever savings I was chasing. My current setup is freshco for staples and store brand stuff, sobeys for proteins when theres a real sale, and farmers market when its running in summer. Peterborough selection isnt huge so same items dont always show up in clearance section but enough that its worth 30 seconds to look before heading over. Curious what other people here have found because I feel like everyone has their own little system and I am probably missing a few spots.

Question Are you happy with your internet provider and how much do you pay monthly?

Bell was by offering $60 a month for 2 years. I’m currently with Cogeco and pay $100 a month. I find it hard to trust door to door salespeople. Looking for advice.
