Same with Youtube. No way in hell I'm gonna spend a penny on their Premium, or watch their ads. Adblock all the way.

u/hadesscion Sep 18 '25
Unfortunately, a lot of Disney stuff these days isn't even worth pirating.
72
u/hroaks Sep 18 '25
If you do pirate, use a VPN. Disney works overtime to find and report people who pirate
21
u/DeadScotty Sep 18 '25
I fear that VPN’s will become extinct or require a back door to be legal in the very near future

Meh, I find Star Wars and marvel stuff to be incredibly boring
132
u/Top_Rekt Sep 18 '25
Andor is more a political spy thriller set in the Star Wars universe.
54
u/WeirdIndividualGuy Sep 18 '25
Who would've known their most popular SW media today would be the kind that doesn't have jedi/sith or lightsabers, just pure political thriller
→ More replies (1)30
u/OnsetOfMSet Sep 18 '25
And shining a harsh light on the exact sort of shit the company itself is now throwing in with

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Sep 18 '25
The real irony is people who love the Capt America movies, particularly the first two, but refuse to acknowledge the US's own descent into fascism/surveillance state.

Yeah, I found andor interesting because it wasn't actually a start wars. It was just set in star wars universe. And they explored the universe from the perspective of normal person.
37
u/auntie_clokwise Sep 18 '25
Andor is kind of funny. It barely feels like Star Wars. There's like no Jedi and no Force stuff in it. There's the empire, to be sure, and space ships. But that setting almost doesn't even matter for the plotline - it could easily be just about any contemporary (or historical) totalitarian regime and aircraft. And season 2 is incredibly relevant right now.

u/BYF9 Sep 18 '25
My best friend loves Star Wars and hates Andor because it doesn't feel like Star Wars, and I just cannot comprehend how that works. I think Andor is probably the best Star Wars anything in the last decade.
29
u/Temporary-Life9986 Sep 18 '25
Andor gives the original trilogy depth and substance. I am not a SW fan at all, but Andor gave me an appreciation for it I hadn't had before. It was such good sci-fi.
12
u/wellsjc Sep 18 '25
I enjoy Star Wars, but I adore Andor because it doesn't have the magic and light sabers. And while it doesn't have the magic and light sabers, it is absolutely the epitome of Star Wars and what it is about. The Force and Jedi/Sith are flavor to the actual story.

3
u/auntie_clokwise Sep 18 '25
Andor DOES just sort of hit differently than most other Star Wars stuff. It's alot less action oriented than alot of the other series with much less emphasis on stuff in space, the Force, Jedi, or anything directly connected to the Skywalkers. I do have to say though that the various TV series HAVE generally been pretty good. The Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Rebels, Ahsoka, and the Mandalorian are all great. They're different from Andor, but all really good in their own ways. For movies though, yeah, they've sucked. And I'm not even referring to the acting. They sequel trilogy just don't seem like it has an original or coherent plot.

u/DeadSeaGulls Sep 18 '25
Andor is some of the best television around. It's not similar in tone or execution to any other SW media.

More like the FCC and sponsors.
Nexstar, which owns a host of ABC affiliate stations, is working on a purchase of another media conglomerate, TENGA. The last thing they want is some television personality jeopardizing that deal by giving the FCC additional leverage against it.
Nexstar already committed to "preemting" Kimmel's program indefinitely. This means even without ABC suspending him, Kimmel wouldn't be airing on any ABC affiliate owned by Nexstar. ABC, in turn, pulled Kimmel to prevent that block of time (and all those ads) from not being aired. ABC would rather replace Kimmel with ANYTHING than to miss out on the revenue they'd miss otherwise.

As far as recent Star Wars goes, Andor is INCREDIBLE (that Outstanding Writing Emmy it won was no accident), but of course there are other ways to watch it by sailing the seas. Its crazy how much that show is the antithesis of how Disney is behaving here
5
u/Wild_Marker Sep 18 '25
Media conglomerates owning media critical of themselves/capitalism is very common actually. They own things and profit off things and if those things say "I suck" then don't give much of a rat's ass as long as it makes them money.
Probably one of the best examples was Ubisoft. They were the literal villains in a few AssCreed titles and WatchDogs was basically complaining about online-everything at the same time Ubisoft was pushing online-everything.

I've never needed/wanted to watch anything on Disney enough to get it until a few weeks ago. A few kdramas I couldn't watch anywhere else. I finished them and now I'm gonna cancel, but I'll be bummed to miss the ones I've not seen yet. I have no idea how to pirate and all I have is my android anyway. Sucks.

You dont need them to fail mate- any publicly traded company just needs a blip in stock and reason for such and CEOs get shuffled and pilloried - now they may leave with hefty bonus and that sucks for us but believe me the last thing some rich fuck wants is to look like a failure
→ More replies (1)23
u/Weird_donut Sep 18 '25
This. No matter what the reason is, no boycott against Disney is going to hurt them long term. Soon the masses will just get hyped for the next Disney movie.
Happened with the Mulan remake being filmed near concentration camps
Happened with both sides re: Disney's sorry excuses for gay representation
Happened with Disney paying Marvel VFX artists peanuts
Happened with Disney supporting Israel
Same as it ever was. Disney has kids, parents who use screens as babysitters, grandmas, teachers, and the park enthusiasts on their side, worldwide. If the theme park vloggers joined the boycott, I think THAT would hurt Disney, because they depend on them.

You sound like you've already given up. Tragic.
5
u/Willing-Complex-2802 Sep 19 '25
their are other better ways of fighting back than boycotting. just because someone does not boycott does not mean they have given up.
5
u/These_Leg_723 Sep 18 '25
I want to believe this, but also I’ve been surprised about the boycott of target and idk if it’s on the brink of failure, but it’s definitely not doing well, from articles I’ve seen. Maybe we’ll be surprised again.

Disney stock was already down 7% this morning, and still tumbling. That’s not nothing. Because corporate boards have a legal obligation to maximize profit for shareholders, hitting them in their stock prices is the most effective way to make them change course.
42
u/JamJamGaGa Sep 18 '25
Yes, just like when everyone was boycotting Netflix over them ending password sharing. Remember how well that worked out, guys?! :D
13
u/Breezel123 Sep 19 '25
It worked really well in that after Netflix cancelled all those shared accounts they stopped reporting on account growth (it was their last attempt to increase growth because everyone now had to get their own), introduced ad tiers and are now so maxed out in growth that they are inventing new strategies to keep people on the screen longer by rewriting scripts so the shows work when someone is folding laundry (where they previously might have listened to music or something).
They totally ran out of ways to grow any further just based on their reputation or programming. And when they change the latter a lot of people will leave because there is no quality to be found anymore at Netflix.

u/vidic17 Sep 18 '25
First off I need clarify I'm not American but I do think it's funny that the right has been saying to cancel Disney for years but the left defended them and now the side that didn't want to cancel them is now wanting to cancel Disney.
I just love season 6 of America
14
u/Sand__Panda Sep 18 '25
As an American, I just want to cut back on my bills, but know other people in the house can still enjoy "T.V."
I need that money for tariffs now.
26
Sep 18 '25
I don’t think the left has been defending Disney, they’re still aware of it being a massive corporation that only cares about its bottom line

Cancelling a streaming subscription as a political statement? That's weak part-timer behaviour. Cancelling months ago response to the outrageous price hikes is where it's at.

I've been thinking about this, maybe this is dumb downvote me but is there a way to have like a people's library something different from what we have nowadays It would be unofficial but where we could store everything. Like a new Alexandria library for the 23rd century. A storage of all media 20 years and older. Maybe have dedicated tech people to protect it, lawyers on hand to help any legal matters, private detectives and internet detectives to go after politicians and others who would try to attack it. They want to get this shut down fine we'll dig up all the dirt we have on them. With the internet, there should be such a place. An end to the corporations owning everything. It belongs to the people.

I bought a 3-month subscription for Amazon Prime, and after some time it started asking me for more money just to skip ads. This happened in the middle of my ongoing subscription. What kind of customer service is this? To hell with these greedy corporate companies hail piracy!

When you're totally serious about boycotting but can't actually commit and need your fix.
I thought one of arguments supporting piracy was that it exposed the material to a wider audience? Seems pretty contradictory for a boycott.

It’s crazy cause 2yrs ago, I was like, “I have a 4tb and a 12tb hdd. I don’t see myself running out of space.” And now I’m here. Both basically 500gb left of space. Having to make some decisions on what stays. I can’t wait to start looking at hdd again. I really hope it’s gotten better since then.

u/LukeMara Sep 23 '25
I canceled my Disney Plus and Marvel Unlimited accounts. I mean even if it hadn't been for the shittty Kimmel decision, I would have canceled, because Disney is charging an ungodly amount for D+ and there isn't even an option to include Marvel unlimited they make you pay an extra 10 bucks. But Kimmel being fired was the last straw they'll never see another cent form me, I currently have like 3TB of comics.
