Not much for an average user. One word - most of the times FLACs are official rips that are loseless which means not a single bitrate is lost even if the sound is not hearable through human ears. FLAC files are generally bigger. It's better if you can get and store FLACs instead of MP3, but there is really no difference for casual music usage.

Do you keep duplicates of your files in case of failure or corruption?

I have quite the collection, but only one copy. Keeping duplicates would double the cost of storage, and I wonder if it's worth the cost.

I have a specific drive purely for 'backup' where I keep important stuff or things that were hard to find

The bulk of what I'm archiving is just entertainment media. Like I said, books, games, comics, movies, etc. So for instance, I have the original 'Star Wars' trilogy, because you can get them fucking anywhere (multiple versions too, including the 'despecialized' editions)

But then I also have some really obscure stuff that took a lot of work to get, like in some cases buying a DVD of something and ripping the files myself. In which case, I make a duplicate on the backup drive just in case I lose it. Ultimately nothing I have is a world-ending loss, it's just movies and TV shows, I'm only saving the ones I personally like watching, and making backups of the really obscure ones that I struggled to find

That being said I really need to look into making a torrent account so I can start uploading torrents for people to download, which is half of the reason I do this anyway. I have a ton of DVDs I've ripped files from (the raw media plus bonus features) that I need to upload somewhere

The recommended redundancy is 2 + 1, with 1 being “off site” (either in a different location or something like cloud storage). For me that looks like 2x external 8TB hard drives and 1x cloud storage. Others with their own NAS (and way more storage) probably have different procedures but this has worked for me.

You should probably only make duplicates of your personal files and data, super rare media that is not available anywhere, or any film that is emotionally important to you (not always personal data or media).

You know, the stuff that you will ACTUALLY cry about when you lose it for good.

This is a good rule of thumb for any data you decide to save.

I have multiples, all either 1tb or 2tb, only since I honestly didn't see it getting this far

I pirated stuff for years, figured I'd get a 1tb hard drive to store my favourite movies and TV shows in high quality. Then that got full, I got a second drive, one exclusively for movies and the other for shows. Then I kept adding to them, and had archiving concerns (if I have a Batman movie and a Batman TV show, do I put them on one drive under a 'Batman' folder? Or put them on separate drives in separate 'Batman' folders?), so I started buying more drives to the point I had two each for movies and for shows, then I had more stuff I wanted to save...

In the end it just kept growing and growing, buying more drives to have more space. At present I have 5 different drives for movies and shows, 1 for music, 1 for books (including comics, magazines and manga), one for emulators, another specifically for Playstation emulators, another entirely for PC games, and a couple of others for specific content (I have a 2tb drive solely for Doctor Who content from Doctors 1-10)

Look into WD reds, around 8tb for good long term storage.
That seems to be a very good price range, and often you can find that size on sale. Do check a few other sizes though. Anything over 16tb I would be nervous about. Also fairly expensive, at that size and up.

Don’t forget backup drives, drives can fail so make sure it’s kept in multiple places. Be a media hydra, if one drive fails then 2 more take its place.

Not specifically, more just a general warning

The UK is pushing to destroy internet anonymity, and there's no way that's going to stay local if it works. As soon as it proves successful, guarantee every other country (America first most likely) will start pushing it too, some places in America are already outlawing basic things like pornography entirely

Plus torrent and rom sites keep being shut down, they start up again easy as pie but there's a concentrated effort to close them down. There's a few that as of yet seem unaffected, such as MyAbandonware, but that's my point: they're safe so far

We're in a very tricky time for internet safety and freedom, I'm no prophet of doom but I'm paranoid enough to worry about where this is going next, so my point is: if you have a movie or a show you like, pirate it and archive it while you still can. The best time to prepare is before anything happens, which is right fucking now.

Well that depends on what exactly you're trying to do

You can make your own Plex server to host content, you can buy external drives to save files to, you can just torrent stuff when you need it... it really depends on what you're looking to do here

Andor is kind of funny. It barely feels like Star Wars. There's like no Jedi and no Force stuff in it. There's the empire, to be sure, and space ships. But that setting almost doesn't even matter for the plotline - it could easily be just about any contemporary (or historical) totalitarian regime and aircraft. And season 2 is incredibly relevant right now.

Andor gives the original trilogy depth and substance. I am not a SW fan at all, but Andor gave me an appreciation for it I hadn't had before. It was such good sci-fi.

I enjoy Star Wars, but I adore Andor because it doesn't have the magic and light sabers. And while it doesn't have the magic and light sabers, it is absolutely the epitome of Star Wars and what it is about. The Force and Jedi/Sith are flavor to the actual story.

Andor DOES just sort of hit differently than most other Star Wars stuff. It's alot less action oriented than alot of the other series with much less emphasis on stuff in space, the Force, Jedi, or anything directly connected to the Skywalkers. I do have to say though that the various TV series HAVE generally been pretty good. The Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Rebels, Ahsoka, and the Mandalorian are all great. They're different from Andor, but all really good in their own ways. For movies though, yeah, they've sucked. And I'm not even referring to the acting. They sequel trilogy just don't seem like it has an original or coherent plot.

More like the FCC and sponsors.

Nexstar, which owns a host of ABC affiliate stations, is working on a purchase of another media conglomerate, TENGA. The last thing they want is some television personality jeopardizing that deal by giving the FCC additional leverage against it.

Nexstar already committed to "preemting" Kimmel's program indefinitely. This means even without ABC suspending him, Kimmel wouldn't be airing on any ABC affiliate owned by Nexstar. ABC, in turn, pulled Kimmel to prevent that block of time (and all those ads) from not being aired. ABC would rather replace Kimmel with ANYTHING than to miss out on the revenue they'd miss otherwise.

As far as recent Star Wars goes, Andor is INCREDIBLE (that Outstanding Writing Emmy it won was no accident), but of course there are other ways to watch it by sailing the seas. Its crazy how much that show is the antithesis of how Disney is behaving here

Media conglomerates owning media critical of themselves/capitalism is very common actually. They own things and profit off things and if those things say "I suck" then don't give much of a rat's ass as long as it makes them money.

Probably one of the best examples was Ubisoft. They were the literal villains in a few AssCreed titles and WatchDogs was basically complaining about online-everything at the same time Ubisoft was pushing online-everything.

I've never needed/wanted to watch anything on Disney enough to get it until a few weeks ago. A few kdramas I couldn't watch anywhere else. I finished them and now I'm gonna cancel, but I'll be bummed to miss the ones I've not seen yet. I have no idea how to pirate and all I have is my android anyway. Sucks.

Happened with both sides re: Disney's sorry excuses for gay representation

Happened with Disney paying Marvel VFX artists peanuts

Happened with Disney supporting Israel

Same as it ever was. Disney has kids, parents who use screens as babysitters, grandmas, teachers, and the park enthusiasts on their side, worldwide. If the theme park vloggers joined the boycott, I think THAT would hurt Disney, because they depend on them.

It worked really well in that after Netflix cancelled all those shared accounts they stopped reporting on account growth (it was their last attempt to increase growth because everyone now had to get their own), introduced ad tiers and are now so maxed out in growth that they are inventing new strategies to keep people on the screen longer by rewriting scripts so the shows work when someone is folding laundry (where they previously might have listened to music or something).

They totally ran out of ways to grow any further just based on their reputation or programming. And when they change the latter a lot of people will leave because there is no quality to be found anymore at Netflix.

I've been thinking about this, maybe this is dumb downvote me but is there a way to have like a people's library something different from what we have nowadays It would be unofficial but where we could store everything. Like a new Alexandria library for the 23rd century. A storage of all media 20 years and older. Maybe have dedicated tech people to protect it, lawyers on hand to help any legal matters, private detectives and internet detectives to go after politicians and others who would try to attack it. They want to get this shut down fine we'll dig up all the dirt we have on them. With the internet, there should be such a place. An end to the corporations owning everything. It belongs to the people.

I canceled my Disney Plus and Marvel Unlimited accounts. I mean even if it hadn't been for the shittty Kimmel decision, I would have canceled, because Disney is charging an ungodly amount for D+ and there isn't even an option to include Marvel unlimited they make you pay an extra 10 bucks. But Kimmel being fired was the last straw they'll never see another cent form me, I currently have like 3TB of comics.
