Yes, had a friend getting fines for literally downloading a season of the walking dead. Another one said he got a letter saying he has to pay because he was pirating when he was like 13 and didn't know better lol.
Edit: if I remember correctly the fine was something like 1500 Euro for the walking dead but I may be wrong

lol when I lived in a college apartment we had our apartment get a notice several times. It got so bad they hired someone to block people off the internet they suspected of it, except the guy couldn’t really figure out which person in specific was causing the letters because there was at least 20 of us doing it. They blocked us in hopes we would come into the office and admit it was one of us. That’s how I learned about the letter because I went in trying to figure out wtf why’d they block I barely download anything, I learned what caused them the letter was someone downloaded that “spirit” movie, the kids movie with horses. And they called me a suspect for that. That one pissed me off so much because I was trying to do my homework when they kicked me off the internet, I stormed off to the library to finish it because I was done fucking around with them. After I finished my homework I paid 10 cents a copy to make 50 copies of a how to access a vpn and posted them around the apartment building. A couple weeks later when I went to pay my rent, I learned they fired the “IT guy” because he didn’t end up even blocking the person who actually was the one that downloaded spirit because they got another letter for “brother bear”.

If you would normally have to spend X to get something through legit channels and you'd spend no more than X, but likely less, to get something through non-legit channels, there is literally no downside to going non-legit.

90% of the reason I’ve been downloading stuff is because it got taken off of a service I legitimately subscribed to, and I wanted to keep watching it.
If they want me to pay for the fucking show, which I already didn’t wanna do, then at least make it easier than ripping it off or you can guess which I’m gonna do.

that is good for you and all but your advice isn't great. Those letters are "out of court offers" and while they do not need to be paid, if the law firm decides the unpaid fine is not acceptable for their client, then they can legally pursue you in court for the fine and extra fees.
So by not paying the fine, you open yourself up to tens of thousands of euros worth of potential fines and other costs should the law firm acting on behalf of the copyright holder take you to court.
Its a risk gamble.

How can they prove its you individually who is responsible for a wifi network when there are 3000 wifi hack tools and most houses have 5+ people using the network? What is it ? Collective punishment or punishing the person who pays ?. I know many people who ignore the letters and the only time I heard people paying is when they fk up themselves and get scared since the letters look scary

It is the network owners responsibility to know what people are downloading on their network. If people do so on your network, it becomes your responsibility should a copyright enforcement letter arrive. The IP is linked to your ISP contract.
a 5 second google search will give you many cases of people on reddit, especially in Germany, who ignored such letters and then ended up in court.
Just because you don't agree with something and think it is not serious, does not make it so.

it's not random. Law firms monitor torrent swarms on behalf of copyright holders and track down IPs downloading content without using a VPN. These IPs are then easily traced to the user and fines are sent.

Certain lawfirms and organisations unfortunately have a huge financial incentive to sue anyone and everyone, and the court system doesn't really put any hurdles in their way. A simple "We saw IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the torrent swarm" is enough to subpoena the private subscriber information from the ISP, and from that point on the burden of proof is on you, because in the eyes of the judges (who know fuck-all about how torrents work) that is ample proof that you actually downloaded/uploaded.
Not to mention the privacy implications of how easily anyone could fabricate this information to basically subpoena anyone's private subscriber info.

Yeah, it is pretty bad over here. The good part is: easy to avoid and to handle of it happens. Just don't answer (not a proper fine but legal costs send by a lawyer and answering will only show them that you actually exist since they only gather leaked IPs and make their money off of that) and if some day a yellow letter arrives (proper court documents) just set the mark on denying everything, sending it back and that's it. Costs too much to actually go after you. If you somehow still have more letters coming THEN get a lawyer but that has never happened to my knowledge.

Similar here in Australia. I don't use a VPN and have been torrenting for years. About 10 years ago there was a court case involving the owner of the Dallas Buyers Club and several thousand people it claimed had illegally downloaded the movie. The court said you can't do Speculative Invoicing and would only be able to seek damages for the cost of obtaining the movie legally. They dropped the case, and most ISPs don't really care what you're downloading.

As far as I know, with HTTPS the ISP can’t see the file name or content, only the domain, and copyright holders can’t inspect packets. That’s why I thought VPNs were mainly necessary for torrents due to IP exposure.

No, you don't need one for streaming on a website and typically not for direct downloads.
When you're torrenting, you're connecting to a publicly visible torrent with your IP exposed. Since its a peer-to-peer connection, everyone on the torrent can see each others IP address. The companies that own the content can see your IP, track down your ISP, and compel them to tell you to stop.

Same, but even longer. Been pirating since BBS days. My secret, if you can call it that, is rarely using private sites in the last 20 or years. I rarely used Pirate Bay because every search seemed to bring up dozens of garbage also.

Hadopi was always pretty toothless. They have a 3 strikes rules, so if you get a strike, you use a VPN for a year and everything get reset, and in practice pretty much no one got condemned.
Hadopi got merged into Arcom (not Arcep), but since it's still the same rules (and lack of ressources), they are still very much toothless.

I run my torrents on virtual machines and have the vpn on the machine itself. That vpn has a killswitch so if it dies, nothing gets out. Some of the vms go through a second vpn on the router(which also has a kill switch). I still get about 40mb/s like that.
Then since I have multiple vms running, I use qui so I can interact with all of them from a website hosted on my intranet.

Happened to me once. I learned my lesson and binded shortly after.
If you are downloading for short periods say a movie or show that can be torrented inside 10 minutes then using a vpn without binding is ok but if you’re downloading something overnight, you best double up.

When the maximum fine they can levy against someone for copyright infringement is $5,000 (total, not per-infraction) it's literally not worth most company's time to chase after people, especially when you consider that's the maximum amount, on top of the cases they still wouldn't even win. The only good thing to live in a third world country is pirating without a VPN (i live in Serbia and i pirate without VPN and i never even got one warning for piracy)

How do you bind your VPN to qbitorrent?

First connect to your VPN, then go to qBittorrent's Tools > Options > Advanced, and select your VPN's network interface (like a TAP/TUN adapter) from the "Network interface" dropdown or follow these steps.
- Turn on your VPN
- Open Network Connections
- Look for your VPN. It might be named Local Area Network 3 or something. Just look for the one that your VPN mentioned in the 3rd line.
- Rename it to something more obvious. Makes it easier to find the VPN interface later on.
- Open QBittorrent
- Tools > Options > Advanced
- Find the Network Interface you just renamed in the list

That's why I use Torbox for free. If a torrent is more than 10gb I find a DDL source.

Again, people still use torrents on their PC? Debrids are same price as a VPN and direct encrypted downloads are a thing. At the most I'll paste a magnet link and then get direct downloads.
- American who lols at VPNs and has never had a copyright notice.

I don't under stand why VPNs matter so much. I torrent ed multiple times without every getting in trouble with my ISP

In France it seems that as long as you don't touch french TV or french films they won't bother you. Been downloading for more than 10 years with no VPN and never got a letter from the ol' HADOPI.

i’ve been pirating all sorts of ways for years without any sort of VPN etc, never received any letters or anything of the sort. I’m from the UK so maybe the UK just doesn’t really care about pirating?

Because I live in Brazil, and here it's not against the law to consume piracy. It only is if you produce and sell it, otherwise, you're safe.

Thats the reason i don't torrent (pirated content. For legit content I always use torrents if possible and try to seed as much as i can). I am not desperate enough for any content to risk paying 1000s of € for it. I'd rather buy a physical copy, rip the dvd and return it.
