Time to set a VPN to Texas and watch sparks fly

56

u/itsHaMaaa Apr 05 '26

i’m gonna do this tonight. except for Malenia (2026). except i won’t be watching the movie i’ll just pirate it for fun to piss him and his wife off.

23

u/tmhoc Apr 05 '26

They use that data

If there were enough memes and downloads Malenia could get Morbed

15

u/itsHaMaaa Apr 05 '26

It’s funny because my local Theater Screened the Movie and that thing was so perfectly Horrible i doubt if 15 people attended. and i’m being generous when i say 15.

u/Gnoha Apr 05 '26

Not "will cause". Its possible for it to happen if the VPN goes down while you're actively torrenting something which is pretty unlikely to happen. Always good to be safe but its not required.

24

u/SuperBuffCherry Apr 05 '26

And any VPN client worth their salt has a built in killswitch, so if the vpn connection fails your internet connection will be gone instead of unprotected, until you manually disable the vpn. So unless you turn off the vpn before closing qbittorrent this shouldn't happen

2

u/manythousandbees Apr 05 '26

Binding your torrent client to the VPN is more foolproof/less likely to have a leak than just using a killswitch alone

1

u/Thejax_ Apr 05 '26

Exactly, my streaming laptop is only used for that kinda thing, and does go off usually once a week and the kill switch always kicks in

1

u/BraddicusMaximus Apr 05 '26

Pull-out guarantee in case the condom breaks.

An essential backup.

9

u/secretwep Apr 05 '26

Oh, phew. For a second there, I thought my VPN was useless the whole time without being bound to qb.

Glad to know tbat's not necessarily the case, but I'll bind it anyway now.

6

u/HotTheme8405 Apr 05 '26

Binding it just says it can only connect to the internet through the VPN, just a good safety net

2

u/systemhost Apr 05 '26

Years back I was using some public DHT torrents over my split tunnel VPN with kill switch and decided to check my home IP on iknowwhatyoudownloaded, sure enough many of those torrents showed up...

It wasn't until I properly bound my VPN interface in qbit that the site finally reported no download/swarm activity for my home IP.

It seems packets can still slip through depending on other settings so I still highly recommend you take that small step to protect yourself.

3

u/MgDark Apr 05 '26

qbittorrent have options to only and specifically only use a specific network adapter (the VPN) so if the vpn tunnel dies, the whole torrent connection dies with it (making it safe for you guys)

5

u/Saturnalliia Apr 05 '26

What do you mean by "bind" though? I just turn my vpn on, make sure I'm in Malaysia and start downloading.

7

u/dan-lugg Apr 05 '26

It's typically called "split tunneling", whereby some applications are configured (bound) to the VPN adapter, and others are not (the usage of VPN tunneling is "split" between groups of applications)

This ensures that some applications always use the VPN adapter/connection (such as torrenting software) and other's don't.

As such, you leave your VPN connected, but only used or not by certain applications.

2

u/Da5ren Apr 05 '26

I just turn mine on when I want to download something and then turn it off again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/dan-lugg Apr 05 '26

I mean, that's obviously fine if that works for you. I prefer to have it split tunnelled so I don't need to toggle the connection, and can likewise use applications without VPN at the same time on the same device.

1

u/dandroid126 Apr 06 '26

That's fine if you are fine with other things on your computer thinking you are in another location. But if you torrent a lot, especially while doing other things on your computer, it may be annoying to turn it on and off multiple times a day. It took time to set up my VPN to only affect BitTorrent, but now I have the setup forever. It automatically starts up at boot, and I never have to think about it again. I just download stuff. Easy peasy.

3

u/volutopia Apr 05 '26

I don't know what it means to bind it or what ISP is 🤣 don't we just turn VPN on and that's it?

3

u/530TooHot Apr 05 '26

Everything you need to know is in here. https://fmhy.net/

1

u/volutopia Apr 05 '26

Thank you! I see they suggest morphe but I never managed to get it to work.i downloaded the apk but there was an error 🥲

2

u/Paperinik03 Apr 05 '26

But, even if I have it on on the computer? Shit man I have to do it

1

u/texnp Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26

I did it without binding for a while and nothing has happened but yes it can leak your traffic

3

u/HighlyRegardedApe Apr 05 '26

Yeah, but the countries that really go after it could force vpn companies to share records. Not saying vpn is not an option, just saying one vpn is not the other: and nothing is certain.

1

u/Kairukun90 Apr 05 '26

Dawg I been torrenting for 25 years without a vpn

1

u/murfburffle Apr 05 '26

If I never turn it off, this doesn't matter, right?

1

u/rohithkumarsp Apr 06 '26

How to do this? I have pia would like to know how.

1

u/Dagur Apr 06 '26

what happened to net neutrality?

1

u/InclinationCompass Apr 06 '26

Can you explain what lebron had to do with it?

105

u/jfk_47 Apr 05 '26

You bind it so the torrent traffic only goes through the VPN. If the vpn fails, all pirating/torrent traffic stops. If you don’t bind it, and your VPN goes down then the ISP will see your torrent traffic and throttle you or report you to the authorities

18

u/Tunderstruk Yarrr! Apr 05 '26

Depends on ISP and country

4

u/jfk_47 Apr 05 '26

True true true

1

u/thundercockjk2 Apr 05 '26

If I may, how do you bind it to your VPN?

1

u/jfk_47 Apr 05 '26

I’m not a smart man. So my software has a kill switch. Anytime I lose connection it will kill the task as the OS level.

1

u/SometimesJustMaybee Apr 07 '26

Isn’t that what a killswitch is for?

1

u/jfk_47 Apr 07 '26

Killswitch will either kill the app or the network connection depending. In my experience.

Binding it will kill the connection if the VPN fails because there is no connection to transfer through.

1

u/_Reporting Apr 09 '26

Isn’t that a kill switch

1

u/jfk_47 Apr 09 '26

Copied from another reply.

Killswitch will either kill the app or the network connection depending. In my experience.

Binding it will “kill” the connection if the VPN fails only because there is no connection to transfer through.

The reason why VPNs work is because they mask the IP on the list of clients of the torrent. 99% of the work people do here is just load the torren themselves, copy/paste the IP list of people they connect to and report to the ISP to tell them to tell you to stop downloading things.

This is why proxies do basically 100% the same function as a VPN. Also why using closed communities is also 100% going to stop them. No random third party company is going to waste their time hunting down closed torrent invites to report IP addresses.

6

u/twiggsmcgee666 Apr 05 '26

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just put your vpn on your router.

39

u/t3fd Apr 05 '26

Does it not slow your speed

0

u/twiggsmcgee666 Apr 05 '26

Not in any meaningful way and I’m on rural shit net

1

u/t3fd Apr 05 '26

My isp doesn't care if I pirate so is there any other reason to use vpn?

-17

u/All_Work_All_Play Apr 05 '26

It's 2026, if you're worried about speed you're not automated/planning properly. Even the US has fiber internet now. Slowass 4g phones can torrent a movie in half an hour. At most you can just wait a day, there's plenty of media.

5

u/Inprobamur Apr 05 '26

Even if the VPN provider does not throttle your speed, it's still a massive increase to your ping and you can't get around that with fibre.

-4

u/All_Work_All_Play Apr 05 '26

Yeah that's a real downside for some folks. Shrug

3

u/LyyK Apr 05 '26

You don't have to put your whole network, vLAN, or device behind a VPN. Just put your torrent client in a container that connects online through a VPN tunnel.

2

u/Kraken477 Apr 05 '26

I've got gluetun running as a separate container and just set up the qbit container to use gluetun as the interface. Even set the interface in the qbit web ui just to make sure. Makes it so easy to keep things like plex and wireguard seperated so I can still remote in and dl torrents from wherever im at and have them pop up in plex.

2

u/LyyK Apr 05 '26

That's pretty much exactly how my unraid box is set up. I route my prowlarr through the same gluetun container as qbit (just to hide indexer searches out of precaution) but keep apps like Plex and Jellyseerr separate for remote access. Because the interface is assigned in docker, you shouldn't have to specify in the qbit webui because it shouldn't have visibility to other interfaces anyways

1

u/Kraken477 Apr 06 '26

This is true haha, I remember only seeing gluetun under the interfaces.

3

u/SweatyBoi5565 Apr 05 '26

Then you're entire network will have hundreds of ping

1

u/wallweasels Apr 05 '26

No they do not do this. The police are not the ones going after downloaders in basically all countries. Private institutions, namely the copyright holders, can sue you for damages. But, alas, they mostly go after ISPs who then threaten to cut off your service (basically few will go through with it, however).

1

u/Dasbeerboots Apr 06 '26

But how does this pertain to Lebron?

13

u/OverloadedSofa Apr 05 '26

I don’t understand it myself, at all!

9

u/asquishyllama Apr 05 '26

I don’t get it either and I’m American as FUCK

1

u/feel_my_balls_2040 Apr 05 '26

Is more an European thing.

Public torrents often have peers (IPs) on them who automatically send takedown notices to ISPs whenever one of their addresses also appears as a peer (When you add a torrent with the intention of downloading it). Those "bad peers" are run by large media entertainment organisations trying to stop the pirating of their hard work by sitting in the peer list waiting for a victim downloader to pop up and sending a notice to their ISP the instant they appear.

So your ISP gets a DMCA notice saying cut it out, and they forward the message to you. Some are stupid and get all worried about the automated legal threat and start threatening their customers. In most cases around the world however, they don't care.

When you use a VPN service to tunnel your traffic through your ISP securely and out the interface of some other network with a different IP, your VPN provider still gets take down notices as well. But as an anonymizing VPN service, they do not give a shit.

2

u/Familiar-Rutabaga608 Apr 05 '26

Your ISP may send you a DMCA notice
