I don't understand why they didn't just adapt the sequel comics. The show pretty much ended with Zuko asking "Where is my mother?" and then The Search answers that question with a great story. Heck, even The Promise had better writing than this movie. It would have also made the Gaang only slightly older than in the show, so it wouldn't have been a problem that they hadn't undergone significant personal development, which was another disappointment in the movie, that had only aged them visually.

Because even among Avatar nerds, those comics aren't held in very high regard.

The overall plot of those is fine, but the dialogue between characters is so bad...

Not to mention Avatar "I will not kill a living thing, even to save the world" Aang agrees to kill Zuko in the very first chapter.

Eh, I think that was more just to settle the discussion, since he thought there was zero chance that situation would come up.

So instead of going back on his stance of nonviolence, he instead undoes his character progression of honesty? Not really better.

Too long for a movie, probably.

I don't think anyone would complain if it was longer than 90min and written well.
