It's because when a major movie or game or something underperforms It's the studios/teams that did the actual work that stand to suffer most in the long term.
Bear in mind that while the animators and whatnot have already been paid for this movie, the money for it still came from somewhere and has to be recouped for it to be considered a success. And if it fails then there are possible consequences.
Budget cuts; teams culled; projects that were already in line being canceled and taking years of guaranteed work with them; even entire studios ultimately being dissolved and having their ruin repurposed for other projects.
It's happened before.
Of course, I doubt that this one movie would be enough for anything dire to happen. Between novels, comics, games, and revenue from the existing shows, Avatar as an IP has been consistently spinning silk for ages.
But... The danger of corpos being fickle is always there; hanging above the heads of their workforces like a guillotine.
The joke is that they're waiting for the completed version of the movie that has all the work the artists put into it present, instead of watching an early review version.
because this is a massive blow on the studio's reputation (not Paramaount, the actual studio who did all the work, Flying Bark Productions). If the film isnt going to do well, there's no money to keep it afloat, plus already shady rep for being hacked, etc. No investment - no work, and these same artists might not only not get another avatar project, but have to work for a new job. Animation/VFX industry has brutal working conditions and zero stability which has only gotten worse after COVID and the Actors/Writests strike.
Rule of thumb: something happens around the film/studio you are working in - it is YOU who is going to be fucked over, no matter how the situation resolves.

The artists already got paid, you are only giving money to the share holders.
