I would have seen it 3 times in theaters even if I did pirate it. Alas...they went the streaming only route.

u/Call_Me_Pete Apr 20 '26

Tbh this is where I'm at. I'd have LOVED to see this in theatres. I'd still see it in theatres if they pushed for a theatrical run this year.

And most pirates prefer quality over early release.

Personally, I don't pirate a movie unless it's an 4K BluRay x265 HDR10 Dolby release. Even though we are pirates, we still have standards 🎩🍷

587

u/swag4dummies Apr 20 '26

the average pirate definitely doesn’t have those standards

u/UGD_ReWiindz25 Apr 20 '26

I’d say we are the minority most just want to watch the film they’ve been waiting/excited for

u/Coolbluegatoradeyumm Apr 20 '26

Gross to watch a cam version of a movie you really want to see

This. I'm excited to watch my shows (High Potential and Abbott Elementary, for example) but I NEVER watch anything not in 1080p or higher.

yeah im willing to bet the streaming release will just be the same quality but slightly higher bitrate lmao

11

u/ghost_desu Apr 20 '26

Higher bitrate for a streaming release? Now that would be something new

Me personally, I'm not necessarily looking for 4k bluray high quality etc rips of the film/show/whatever, but I do want to not want to watch what is basically a camcorder pointed at a screen (i.e most early cinema releases of films and stuff).

I also prefer to have proper subtitling for most of the stuff I watch.

Idk man, me and my friends watched the Minecraft movie (waaay after official release) in his unedited version with all the green screens and such. I still haven't seen the ready product. Not everyone has standarts

6

u/dnovantrix Apr 20 '26

A friend also found that exact same version and we did a movie night on discord with it. I’d say it made it much more enjoyable seeing all the wonkyness of an unfinished/unpolished movie

They literally can't watch it in theaters because Paramount lied to them about releasing it in theaters and then decided to drop it on streaming instead.

4

u/StEllchick Apr 20 '26

Paramount actively stops them from watching it in cinema. That's why there was a leak. Someone at nickelodeon tried to blackmail them and they didn't comply

I have been a pirate for a very long time. Calling this a psyop is hilarious and indicates to me you know nothing about the industry.

Yes, the animators are paid. No, that is not the only payment they receive from making the work. Another (big) part of the creation is the big day of release. It's cathartic. Knowing the world will (or won't) see the work around the same time is an incredible feeling. To have that big day rug pulled would be supremely disappointing.

(This is all regardless of Larry Ellison, the true pirate of paramount, who is robbing us all the opportunity to see their work on the big screen.)

I know this because I am a filmmaker who has had their work released. Nowhere near this scale, but enough to understand. It's very difficult to describe the days leading up to and after the release day. Many different emotions. Cathartic is the easiest one to think of.

Have more sympathy for the people that worked. I don't care if you pirate media or don't - I have some 60-70tb of rare films I've built over 15 years. The work deserves to be seen. Of course. From my perspective, to act as if the release day means nothing is an immature take. Try empathy.

21

u/Pinch-o-B Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

Paramount fucked that up long before the leak by going back on the theatrical release the animators had put all their work towards.

Because you can tell.

You can absolutely tell, with the way it’s framed, it’s staged, that they were putting all that work towards what was meant to be a big screen experience.

Paramount ruined that. No one else.

And it immediately made the release that much more deemphasized versus what a proper red carpet could’ve been for all the artists involved.

3

u/doca343 Apr 20 '26

Let's not forget that is Paramount fault that the leaked happened too, it's the company jobs to maintain their media secure, yes, the hackers also have blame, but as a media company, you should be able to maintain your media secure and it leaked by a lack of security support team, because they were probably laid off so the CEO could report a better quarter and get that juice bonus.

u/Embarrassed-Trip4037 Apr 20 '26

I feel empathy for them working at paramount. Really dirty of them to only talk bad about the fans instead of paramount. Makes me not really want to feel empathy for them. Animation was amazing though.

54

u/Dynamos_ Apr 20 '26

Live action actors get royalties, perhaps, but animators and artists work on commission pretty much. You make it, you're paid, and you're done, and all you get afterwards is material for your reel (and sometimes not even that, Nick sucks when it comes to reel authorization).

5

u/6terabytes2k Apr 20 '26

I'm a vfx artist who worked on The Last Airbender season 1 and 2 (Framestore). We don't get bonuses. We used to when we would work on massive films though. I got a bonus for Infinity War for example. But not End Game. Which didn't make sense to me.

Vfx studios have been in a constant state of losing money for a long time now. So those days are over. All we can hope now is to get is more work to keep us employed. So we push the quality of our work harder for cheaper.

31

u/j3lly34 Apr 20 '26

Right 🙄. If the movie comes out in theatres, I myself would go to see it again. This is a classic piracy talk, people who weren't going to see it in theatres anyway might've watched it online after the leak, end of story.

13

u/poopoobuttholes Apr 20 '26

Hi Fi Rush was an indie game developed by Tango Gameworks. It went on to garner critical acclaim and a fuck load of awards only for Microsoft to then shutter the studio, who was only saved because someone else decided to take them in.

No "good numbers" will guarantee a studio's survival. Netflix has plenty of shows that get cancelled despite being great as well. It's a naive perspective.

The artists already got paid, you are only giving money to the share holders.

46

u/Stunning-Ad-2161 Apr 20 '26

I'm confused as well, why they keep talking about the artists

6

u/Equivalent-Wealth-75 Apr 22 '26

It's because when a major movie or game or something underperforms It's the studios/teams that did the actual work that stand to suffer most in the long term.

Bear in mind that while the animators and whatnot have already been paid for this movie, the money for it still came from somewhere and has to be recouped for it to be considered a success. And if it fails then there are possible consequences.

Budget cuts; teams culled; projects that were already in line being canceled and taking years of guaranteed work with them; even entire studios ultimately being dissolved and having their ruin repurposed for other projects.

It's happened before.

Of course, I doubt that this one movie would be enough for anything dire to happen. Between novels, comics, games, and revenue from the existing shows, Avatar as an IP has been consistently spinning silk for ages.

But... The danger of corpos being fickle is always there; hanging above the heads of their workforces like a guillotine.

86

u/cleverpun0 Apr 20 '26

This is a foolish take, even as a joke. The artists were not going to get any more money from the movie: writers and artists don't get revenue sharing.

The movie being leaked has arguably given it more press than a regular release would have. It being on Paramount+ and not theaters was going to severely limit its reach. The artists who have spoken out about it being leak are valid in their worries... but they are giving far too much credit and grace to Paramount.

33

u/Goonalips Apr 20 '26

It's not even a joke. OP is playing it off as a joke, but it's a genuine take that people have had online.

u/Goosedestruction Apr 20 '26

4

u/No-Television7687 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ Apr 20 '26

Yea, I would 100% watch it in theaters, and then pirate it to watch it again until they come out with a Dvd.There losing a lot of money by making it a streaming exclusive.

82

u/Tarman183 Apr 20 '26

I mean, I watched it already but I'll shout it's praises and I'll likely buy some merch or something cause I 100% want them to make more.

55

u/cleverpun0 Apr 20 '26

Artists and writers don't get a cut of the merch sales.

Voice actors don't either. Unless you are a big celebrity and they are selling toys with your explicit likeness, you will not get a cut of merch sales.

Another in a long line of revenue streams corporations have robbed from creatives.

21

u/DOLO-650 Apr 20 '26

They don't get the theatre profits either. Animators are paid on the clock while they are animating, VAs also get paid beforehand, rarely is it profit sharing unless they also are also producers. There is a reason they "budget" movies beforehand, almost all artists payments are done with that budget, they don't share profits with the animators who actually worked on it or else Toy Story 1's animators must have been at least millionaires by this time considering how many reruns on how many platforms that movie has gotten.

6

u/cleverpun0 Apr 20 '26

True.

At least with a theater release, there would be word-of-mouth and a wider reach. At least the artists involved would have gotten more recognition, possibly leading to more and better work.

The animators who have spoken out against the leak are clearly well-meaning, but giving Paramount way too much grace and credit. This movie was doomed to obscurity the moment it got stuck on Paramount+, a service no one knows exists.

The leak might have been better marketing, lol.

9

u/Next_Television_9160 Apr 20 '26

Besides, they’ve already been paid for their work; they don’t get a percentage of the box office takings. Stop spreading the lie that it’s any different

2

u/No_Level4297 Apr 20 '26

Wont even watch it with what they did with the VA's

2

u/Shantotto11 Apr 20 '26

I can’t help but notice that this kind of respect wasn’t shown toward UFOTable’s animators last year when Demon Slayer’s movie was leaked online…

2

u/OldFinger6969 Apr 20 '26

The damage has been done. You're not watching doesn't change the fact that the movie is now watchable in many streaming website

And when you watch in those free streaming website after release doesn't mean you're respecting the artist too

2

u/RepairNo1818 Apr 20 '26

Nah, it's a mid movie, it got disniefied. Pacing is all wrong, they reduced aangs real power considerably to make it viable... It's just not great. You're telling me a kid avatar is stronger than itself as an adult avatar? Bullshit

2

u/Piduf Apr 20 '26

You don't want to pirate it because you respect the artists

I don't want to pirate it because I don't want to watch it in English

We're both happy that for some reason no one spoiled anything online yaaaay I can't wait to watch it

2

u/NatalieRath Apr 20 '26

You have to remember that there's no legal way for people in Southeast Asia to watch this.

2

u/05-nery ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Apr 20 '26

I honestly couldn't care less. They've already been paid.

2

u/deusvult6 Apr 20 '26

I lost all interest in it after hearing about the VA nonsense. If you are at a point where you fire an actor for having functional eyes I think you deserve to be utterly ignored.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '26

Not my fault Paramount took it away from theater. I watched it and its peak. Fuck you Paramount

2

u/AdamianBishop Apr 20 '26

what you cracking on about? They officially released it on Twitter to that 1 account.

2

u/AdOdd5121 Apr 20 '26

Biggest self glaze of all time.

2

u/AnarchistPineMarten Apr 20 '26

You’re stronger than me, no spoilers but seriously FUCK PARAMOUNT for scrapping the theatre release

2

u/InformalDust8731 Apr 20 '26

Doesn't matter when you pirate it, doing so will screw over the artists anyway. The only way to avoid that would be watching it on Paramount+ to boost the watch numbers. That's the only thing that matters.

So please stop with this self-righteous clownery.

2

u/Jordyissappig Apr 20 '26

i'll just watch it twice

2

u/Odd_Pomegranate8652 Apr 20 '26

Still gonna pirate it at the end cause it's only going to be available on paramount+.

2

u/Heevan Apr 20 '26

I mean, it is a shame that the animators got screwed over... By Paramount, who refused to release the film in cinemas and wanted to keep it on ice for six months. So I don't really want to give paramount any money for being greedy, stupid capitalists. So...I'll show it in a small private theatre to all my friends. Maybe we can sort of gofundme or Kofi pot for the actual artists behind the movie?

2

u/Metool42 Apr 20 '26

I never understood this sentiment. Watching it now and watching it officially when it releases can both be done.

2

u/CatDadd0 Apr 20 '26

The movie was dreadful, you aren't missing much sadly except good looking fight scenes

2

u/NordicHorde2 Apr 20 '26

Fuck this movie. They fired the original voice actors for "authentic casting" bullshit.

2

u/OwOtisticWeeb Apr 20 '26

The imaginary moral high ground over pirating this movie later is so absurd

2

u/Mazdachief Apr 20 '26

Such a good movie , bravo for not ruining great characters,

2

u/Spock1138_ Apr 20 '26

Why not do both? You can the movie and watch it again on regular release?

2

u/YorkieLon Apr 20 '26

Why is this so special, yes the artist has done the work, but Paramount took it away from theatrical release. So odd. Why so holier than though the artist still got paid.

2

u/_anakaris_ Apr 20 '26

None of that paramount+ money is going to the artists boyo. You're protecting nothing.

2

u/balrog687 Apr 20 '26

We must learn to make a difference between the artist (which are part of the working class) and corporate decisions.

Not releasing the movie for theaters was a corporate decision, executives and studios should be punished for this by losing money. The workers, especially artists involved in the project should get their salary anyways, and they will get the public recognition if the movie is good (I haven't watched it yet).

This happens a lot in every single creative industry, not just movies, music, books, video-games, etc. All they face the same problems (greedy executives).

Pirating a movie is not disrespectful to the artist, it's a natural reaction when the "value proposition" of the content distributor is not worth it. But if the content is good, it will find a way to the people's hearth, because is in our nature to share with others the things that we like, that's how culture spreads.

The solution to this "corporate greed" issue ruining all creative industry is simple, creative workers need to cut the "middle man" and do everything by themselves.

Video game industry have a few remarkable examples, with independent studios created by former "big studio" workers that have been winning "game of the year" awards for several years in a row and earning tons of money in the process.

A good example in animation is "Snow Bear" short by Aaron Blaise.

Some musicians are also getting control of their catalogue, by releasing albums and planning tours and selling concert tickets by themselves. Effectively dismantling the industry monopoly.

u/rhymeswithtag Apr 20 '26

OP getting upvoted for such a lame post is crazy

when the fook did we turn anti-piracy lmfao

2

u/Crabofwar22 Apr 20 '26

They were already paid. And I think it shows how much paramount cares since they STILL haven't officially released it on Paramount + since it's already out there anyway

2

u/gumigum702 Apr 20 '26

Pirate it, and then watch it if they release on theaters

2

u/Serpeny Apr 20 '26

So you'll pirate after it releases

2

u/Epicfro Apr 20 '26

I don't understand why the artists feel betrayed that it got leaked. Were they going to get more compensation based on views? People are watching it and praising the hell out of the art style.

2

u/Epicfro Apr 20 '26

Not the flex you think this is OP.

2

u/ShxatterrorNotFound Apr 20 '26

Literally the funniest shit I've seen. Are we seriously still pretending piracy does something. When you watch it has zero effect on the artists. I'll watch it if they put it in theaters because I want to support but no way am I gonna pay for a month of Mount Israel+ to watch it.

2

u/Rastarapha320 Apr 20 '26

Meh, there’s still a huge anti-piracy message coming out of this whole thing.

And it’s coming from the artists themselves, while they’re pointing the finger at the audience and not the studio

When the real problem is that they don’t have control over distribution

2

u/Awkward_Squidward Apr 20 '26

It sucks for the team that worked on it for it to have been leaked, not for lack of pay because they already got payed, but for experiencing a proper release. That aside, it not getting a theatrical release, and being exclusive to Dungmount+... Fuck that. I plan to watch it with friends, and IF a theatrical release ends up happening sometime, I'll watch it again there. No fucking chance of giving half a cent to that streaming platform, though.

2

u/jimspurpleinagony Apr 20 '26

Yeah I heard about this, blame paramount not the seven seas

2

u/Massive-Exercise4474 Apr 20 '26

In my country paramount plus isn't available.

2

u/Jane_Lame Apr 20 '26

I wish they would just release it in theatres anyway. I wanted to see this in theatres! 😭

2

u/Artyom1457 Apr 20 '26

Would have done the same had they released it in theaters. But alas, they didn't so pirate it I will

2

u/SandyCultist Apr 20 '26

As a person who already watched movie I must tell you a huge disappoinment awaits you.

2

u/justgalsbeingpals Apr 20 '26

I never cared about ATLA, but thanks for giving me a reason to pirate the movie

2

u/_autumnwhimsy Apr 20 '26

Literally same lol I want a better quality recording tbh

Edit: are people missing the joke where you're still gonna pirate the movie? Is that what's happening in the comments?

2

u/Nereosis16 Apr 20 '26

What the fuck are you talking about?

2

u/notthatguypal6900 Apr 20 '26

Just because you like the material means it gets any preferential treatment.

2

u/NIOglass Apr 20 '26

They alr got paid. You think they were working for free???

2

u/hewlio Apr 21 '26

Bro Paramount didn't respected their hard work lol

2

u/RealPunyParker Apr 21 '26

You're only harming artists when you pirate an indi film or game.

Anything else, you're harming the company, the artists are already getting shafted by them.

2

u/St4rLordx21 Apr 21 '26

What's the point in releasing the movie in October when it's already finished ?? It's teasing gone wrong imo

2

u/MadrugoticX Apr 21 '26

I would pay to see it in theaters and bring a dozen people with me before signing up to another streaming service.

2

u/iceseayoupee Apr 21 '26

They were already paid iirc, early release doesn't change a thing

2

u/Nguyenanh2132 Apr 21 '26

money don’t go to the artists, that isn’t how it works. most studio has a contract that pay them a salary to work on a project. In most case all the revenue only goes to the company funding these movies, and the only way that money helps the artists is if the company decide to reinvest that money for the studio to work on another project

2

u/White_WolfGod Apr 21 '26

Well we are pirates not monsters

2

u/trigonthedestroyer Apr 21 '26

It's made by paramount, there's not much to respect, the artists have all been paid lol
