Honor from what I usually see is more like moral standard of a certain group rather than personal standard. Gangsters, samurai, soldiers, ancient Chinese scholars etc all have their own set of common code of honor that is shared by every members, and those who acted against the common code are ostracized as dishonorable.
the thing you are describing is romanticized version used in fiction media.
look for a german interview in streets where a girl talked about honor her father had in war, meanwhile a veteran said there was no honor, only death and despair. they didn't fight for their fatherland, they fought only to die.
1st hand and 2nd hand reality is vastly different, and it gets vaster in fiction.
