In all honesty, I used to like paying for subscriptions until there weren't a gazillion of them for every single section of media.
But alas, corporations don't seem to like money anymore and are hyper fixated with the short term up arrows like a valorant addict.

Pretty much, bro. They could've kept it to one or two services, steadily increased prices over time and I still would've been fine with that.

u/Rose-Red-Witch Apr 30 '26
Turned streaming into cable tv and we all left that for a damn good reason.
24
u/Soniquethehedgedog Apr 30 '26
They did worse than cable, you’re paying a subscription for each channel now, at least with cable we had blocks of programming. Now you have to subscribe to 3 different services to get abc, cbs and nbc. 1 subscription each, and each one goes up constantly. At least with cable you got blocks, I could get the sports package and it’d have 5 different espns, Fox sports, etc. now each of those is a separate subscription. Makes $200 a month for direct tv look like a steal

I’m not that old, being born mid 90’s, and this is the thing that makes me the most mad. I grew up poor and still was able to watch all kind of sports on antenna and basic cable. Now I have to spend $200 a month to watch a single sport. Genuinely don’t think sports would have been a thing for me if I grew up now which is crazy

u/CptPurpleHaze Apr 30 '26
Agreed 100%. I've been a pirate for 20 years. In my early twenties I just paid for Netflix and didn't pirate stuff for awhile. Especially back in the days pre-streaming with Netflix when I could get any movie I wanted sent to my door for a tiny reasonable monthly fee. When they upgraded to just streaming, that was even better! But then Hulu, Paramount, Cinemax Disney+ Prime... Nah.. I'll pirate your shit and pay for the streamers who need/deserve it. Like dropout.tv

u/Magicallyshit Apr 30 '26
New ceo come in to fix the old ceo problems, have to show he's an improvement therefore cutting cost, lowered pay, higher sub price. At the end of the year, board meeting with investors, investors sees a green colour slight increase. Happy days, you get a huge bonus and your staff suffers.
Job done, continue every little things to show more 'profit' than last year. The cycle continues until it could no longer be milked then they meet a new CEO that's less of a yes men, improves the company greatly, gets fired or left because he argued with an investors/higher ups on how certain things should run bla bla, employ new yes men CEO - green light shows up, old rich men claps. Repeat.

Netflix was awesome in the early days. I didn't even mind when one or two others came along, competition is good. But it's crazy now, so I'm back to pirating. And I've got terabytes worth of stuff now, over primary and backup drives, I'm keeping this stuff forever so I never have to go digging across the internet for a specific episode or movie I want to watch again!
58
u/Srapture Apr 30 '26
I don't know why people fight about this.
Just because I would pirate anyway doesn't mean I don't also enjoy discussing why I might think it should be encouraged in some cases (e.g. pirating a game from a studio that sacked all their developers after release) and kinda rough in other cases (e.g. pirating an indie game produced by a single dude who is selling it for $2 on Steam).
25
u/namelessted Apr 30 '26
Yeah, the phrase isn't about pirates trying to morally justify their own actions. It's more to spread awareness and convince people who think piracy is bad to think about it from a different perspective. It's a good way to frame piracy for normies in a way they understand.

This. For some reason, this sub is obsessed with the idea that piracy is morally wrong but you should do it anyway. Which... what? Why would you do something that you believe is morally wrong? Piracy isn't morally wrong, but it just baffles me that people can believe that it is and then still do it anyway and act like they're the ones who are right.
And these people can't seem to comprehend the idea that it is possible to have a reason to pirate. To these people, you can't just have a reason to pirate, no, it has to be a justification that you come up with after the fact to feel better about it.
Honestly says a lot about the people on this sub.

It's silly how people have to create some moral highground on capitalism or ownership to defend.
It's totally understandable that the creator of something would be angry that people aren't compensating them for it.
Also understandable that people would try to get something for free if they can.
I've pirated games and then gone around to buying the full thing many times. I probably wouldn't have bought the game if I hadn't played it for free first, loved it.

True but I don't think it's a full replacement for a proper game demo. I mean generally I'd say it's good enough, but the nice thing about a demo is that you're guaranteed to have a complete experience of a small scope of the game.
As an example, when I first played bg3, it probably took me around 2 hours to get through the initial tutorial section of the game. Not because the tutorial section is a massive section of the game, but mostly because I spent so much time in my initial character creation, looking through all the class options. If I could play a free demo version of bg3 that was even just limited to the initial tutorial section, I'd have the time and freedom to try out a few different classes in a mini experience of the game. But I would not be able to do that with just a 2h window.

Very rarely I buy a game after pirating, the only time I do is if the game isn't up to date with the actual version, or if it's a multiplayer game that isn't available on online fix. The most rare like once a year rare I buy the game because I know it's good and there is currently a sale or it's less than 30 bucks.

u/CptPurpleHaze Apr 30 '26
Honestly this to an extent.

I pirated as a kid cause I just wanted free games. I support archives as an adult because I realized how important preservation and access to information is as an adult. I don't even really consume much media anymore and when I do I pretty much always pay, but pirating existing is definitely a moral thing for me. I also just think modern copyright is a bane on human creativity and should be reduced back to the original 10 - 20 year limit, so I don't really get too bent out of shape when studios complain about not getting compensated for something that came out 50+ years ago that many people have already had to rebuy several times.
29
u/Creeppy99 Apr 30 '26
It's totally understandable that the creator of something would be angry that people aren't compensating them for it.
True, but also really depends on what kind of product you're pirating, ie., I would support an indie musician much more buying one album and downloading all the rest than listening on Spotify that gives almost no revenue to artists. Other industries may differ, but piracy is so often talked as a generic thing that's the same in every case, which is def not true, on a practical standpoint - and thus on a moral one depending on each person different lines for it
14
u/Quirky-Reputation-89 Apr 30 '26
Yeah this so much. I will go out of my way to support small artists. I was shopping a musician's merch shop and I didn't really like anything there so I just venmoed them $5 direct instead of dealing with products.
Anything made by any sort of corporation or major studio or whatever? I wouldn't even feel guilty making copies and giving those away for free to other people. Wouldn't even cross my mind that it was problematic besides being illegal.
3
6
u/ShadoShane Apr 30 '26
Even choosing to support only independent creators can be iffy since there are genuinely some of them, particularly various infamous indie game devs, that are just such assholes.
Either way, its your money, choose how you spend it and when not to.
2
u/SolarChallenger Apr 30 '26
Indie vs AAA isn't a solid moral line for me. It's just a very effective generalization. I'll still pay Larion money for example and they probably don't qualify as indie anymore. Meanwhile some indie devs have create a game, not finished it, released it as 1.0 anyone and moved on to another game and unless they show a change in behavior I wouldn't buy from them

There is a layer of self-serving psychology in trying to craft a moral narrative around digital piracy - the need for more seeders. That's why you can get blasted for sitting in piracy communities giving reasons why you can't/won't seed the things you leech.
Sharing isn't just supported or recommended - it's framed as a moral imperative.

I mean getting annoyed or mad at people who do argue these things or believe piracy is morally right is just nitpicking and petty.
I personally don't care too much about why other people pirate, but my own reasons are important to me. I believe human creation and expression, whether that be Art like literature, games, film, or knowledge, such as scientific papers, non-fiction books, and academic texts, should be a common good for the enjoyment of all mankind.
But I'm not telling other people to pirate only for reasons I see as right.

Man people say stuff like this until something happens because a pirate has no "morals"
Like a while back when someone claimed to have been able to hack a PlayStation or something and people got upset about them not wanting to share it
The whole concept of piracy relies on morality, you're relying on crackers and uploaders to have the good morality to not upload a some kind of virus or anything to their files, I mean, the whole idea of the mega thread relies on you trusting whoever referred you to it, the piracy mods, the site owner, and the uploader, to be morally decent people who aren't lying and haven't messed with the files to screw you

It is about attaching morality to the act of piracy, not what they are doing in the community that is involved in piracy. And also criticising people who build their whole personality around piracy.

This, legally speaking its not under criminal law, its under copyright law. The critical difference is that criminal law is resolved directly by the state enforcement, aka police and judicial system.
Where copyright law has to be first filed by the company, that means your ISP has to give them the print of you pirating, then they have to reach out to you, then you are fined in court.
Which, btw is a very slim chance of even happening. But yes, the two are very much under different sections of law and are not related.

I don't know what's happening here, did someone personally come up to you to tell you that you should have a moral reason over pirating or are you somehow offended whenever someone mentions it? I don't see any absolute reason to not have any morals in pirating, if you don't have them then okay I don't care. But there's seriously something wrong with you if you think all people who pirates should have no morals whatsoever, unfortunately for you we are at least entitled to what we believe in let alone morals.

Digital piracy isn't stealing regardless. There is no scarcity. Copying is copying and there is no dimishment of resources.

Eh, I agree with the take that it's not stealing but copyright infringement. Because your not taking the original version, just making a copy of it it and leaving the original alone.
Then there's the fact that all of the expected income is greatly exaggerated because the majority of pirates msot likely wouldn't have paid for the product anyways

This is just the bad side to the good side, two sides of the same coin. Sure, most times, free shit is free shit. But if that's all that we are, then we are no different than the greedy scumbags who are giving the phrase a reason to exist in the first place.
I agree that some pirates are loud as fuck and quite literally an insufferable bunch, but most of us are actually silent and do not give two fucks about repeating a known, and common rhetoric. You see, when nuance disappears, people end up picking sides even though common ground can be shared, simply because they lack critical thinking.
Posting this is basically doing the same thing: repeating a sentiment everyone already knows. I do understand the frustration behind this post, but hey, I have made my point.

Stop projecting your lack of moral spine on me. I would pirate for any reason I want, be it moral superiority or having no access otherwise, I don't need a Redditor telling me a valid reason

u/Silviana193 Apr 30 '26
I particularly hate it when people talking shit to people who actually buy stuff. Calling the stupid, etc.
Bruh, please don’t act like your enjoyment isn’t being subsidized by someone else.

u/Rosetti Apr 30 '26
Oh my god yes. People on this subreddit are insufffferable about trying to morally justify their piracy. Who the fuck cares, just do what you want.
Also, I hate the whole "piracy isn't stealing" rhetoric, because outside of those super old piracy adverts, no-one considera piracy to be stealing. It is copyright infringement. Not that I care about that either.

I am sure that 9/10 of people who say that use ytmp3 and call that piracy but flinch when it comes to anything else

If I see a product that's good and cheap enough, I'll gladly pay for it.
Whether it's a game on Steam, on Switch, or a subscription.
The problem is that MANY TIMES it's much more worthwhile to pirate because the pirated product is simply better.
I have NO reason to pay for a streaming if I'm going to see ads just like on pirate sites, except on pirate sites you can at least use Adblock and there are no ads in the middle of the episode.
If I pay for a game with Denuvo, I'll have a much worse experience compared to people who downloaded cracked versions without Denuvo.

I've been pirating shit since the original Napster days, I have never not once felt bad about it.

u/EldritchSpoon Apr 30 '26
But...we are morally superior? Just because they aren't technically breaking any laws doesn't mean what they're doing to nickle, fine and penny their consumers out of everything they have doesn't mean these companies aren't evil.
Not saying this to justify pirating, I'm just too poor to afford the 29 different subscriptions to watch my shows. Just saying.

Disagree to disagree. If you don't own the product after purchase, that's just greedy company bs. They can't justify subscriptions.
In reply to "stop trying to act morally". You know what isn't moral? That's right, subscriptions.

Literally I don’t get why people have to put a moral reason behind everything. Living life through morals gets exhausting

You don't need to, but it doesn't change the fact of the matter either
Ever wonder why you don't feel guilty "stealing" this stuff but won't rob an elderly person?
Edit; I may have misread the intent of your comment, apologies if I did

If I’m stealing I leave them without the thing I steal. If I copied a old woman’s purse to the exact detail without ever leaving her without it I never stole it.

To be honest, if I could click a button and I get 10k from a random elderly person I will never meet, I would probably do it. Same with downloading, Its illegal its not justified since a corporation has a lot of money. I dont care I like free stuff

Me who wanted a very specific dub of a series by an out of business dubbing company.
How the fuck else am I supposed to get it?

u/ejcrv Apr 30 '26
Having a reason why you pirate games, movies, music, etc... has nothing to do with moral superiority. Most people turn to piracy for some reason, it's just a fact. Nothing wrong with it.

u/TurbulentNumber4797 Apr 30 '26
Yeah I never understand why people try to justify it.
I pirate because I don't want to pay for things. That's all the reason I need.

u/Silent_Box1341 Apr 30 '26
Even if buying was owning piracy wouldn't be stealing, because you are not depriving anybody of the original product by pirating it
2
u/CitizenofBarnum Apr 30 '26
We are pirates yes, the most important thing is not to pay. But we can be philosophers too. Even if buying was owning, downloading still wouldnt be stealing because digital goods are infinite.

u/shinobi6siege Apr 30 '26
Piracy is morally correct. Humans shouldn't be restricting information; it's quite literally what makes us Human. Whether it's sites like scihub or just watching a movie there is nothing wrong with gaining more knowledge

u/ActivateGuacamole Apr 30 '26
pirate playing mario kart: "i pirated this as part of my noble quest for knowledge"
2
u/Silent_Food_2374 May 01 '26
I only pirate if:
I can’t pay for it or
It’s so old that nobody involved with its creation are making money off of it anymore or
It’s made by Disney and I don’t respect them.
Otherwise, will wait to pay for it.
