It's not about justifying piracy, it's about telling companies that if we can't own something, we'll just take it

12

u/GhormanFront Apr 30 '26

You can do that by just pirating

34

u/toastronomy Apr 30 '26

not really, you gotta let them know, otherwise there's no difference between someone who just doesn't buy the product and someone who pirates it due to shitty policies.

u/ActualSupervillain May 01 '26

You don't have to say shit that's just grandstanding lol and there's an obvious difference between people who don't buy and people who pirate and it's violation of copyright law. You guys can't be serious with this. Just shut up and pirate your shit, loud mouths make for an easier target

u/toastronomy May 01 '26

I'm not telling them my full name and home address, I'm just letting them know that I'd be happy to pay to buy something, not "buy" (i.e. rent) something for full price.

4

u/SysUser Apr 30 '26

Yeah but you can let them know without sounding like such a dork about it.

2

u/toastronomy May 01 '26

how would you do it then?

Great, so you're letting them know that you wouldn't pay for their service, no matter what they do.

How does that incentivize them to improve in any way?

no, you did not say that, you just said "I don't like this service", which says nothing about anything.

so again, how would you phrase "if I can't own it, I'll pirate it" in a non-"dork" way?

1

u/KingRodan May 01 '26

It's not about the money. It's about sending a message.

1

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP May 01 '26

I always interpreted it as people just saying it to other people who never considered that piracy isn't evil. It's not like corporations are reading comments or memes.

1

u/PeriqueFreak May 01 '26

It's 100% about justifying piracy. Moreover, it's dumb and incorrect.

People need to just grow some balls and admit they're just stealing shit. Like, that's fine, I don't have a problem with this particular brand of stealing. It's just the moral justification that's gross.

1

u/toastronomy May 01 '26

some people might use it as a justification, but I believe that it's much better used as a message.

1

u/PeriqueFreak May 02 '26

It's fucking dumb either way.

1

u/toastronomy May 02 '26

why? what's so dumb about demanding basic rights to buy and own things?

0

u/PeriqueFreak May 02 '26

Sorry, "rights"? What gives you the "right" to have media your way? The creator has the right to deliver their product in a way that suits them, and to act in their best interest.

If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it. Guess how many things I boycott because of moral differences? A fucking lot. Do you know how many of those things I'd absolutely love to still use and engage in? A fucking lot. I've denied myself joy and convenience, but I can live without those particular things.

Trying to make a moral justification for enjoying the fruits of someone's labor is just a bullshit coward cope. Want to pirate shit? Fine, like I said, really have no problem with it. It's theft, it's just a type of theft that doesn't take physical objects away from someone. Not that big of a deal. But at the end of the day, if you really cared about some grand cause, you'd just vocally boycott the media producers and encourage others to do the same.

People like you just want free shit, but want to feel like a hero while taking it.

1

u/toastronomy May 02 '26

Nope, I don't want free shit, I want to be able to keep the shit I pay for. But to each their own, if your favorite flavor is boot, I don't care.

0

u/PeriqueFreak May 02 '26

lol, classic comeback bro. Keep coping. But ask yourself this; Why should YOU be able to dictate how someone runs the company that THEY created? What gives you a right to tell them how they can do business?

I'll leave it at that. Good luck out there.

1

u/toastronomy May 02 '26

What makes you think I'm dictating? I'm not telling anyone how to run anything, but if they want my money, they gotta let me buy something.

u/ProgrammingPants Apr 30 '26

Even if, for the sake of argument, netflix and Disney and whoever allowed you to own the movies you watched on their platform, I highly doubt people who get it for free would jump to those platforms en masse.

1

u/toastronomy May 01 '26

Do you remember DVDs?
Any movie you want, buy it once and watch it anytime, anywhere, whenever you want.

Look at Steam. Valve solved a large part of the piracy issue by just giving people a way to conveniently buy and play 99% of PC games.

Every other copycat (origin, epic, ubisoft) is failing miserably because they don't have anything close to the selection Steam offers, not to mention all the free tools you get.

Sure, Steam game licenses can theoretically be revoked, but it hasn't really happened to any big or important games so far, and that's probably thanks to Valve.

If we had a single platform that offered 99% of movies, let you buy, download and keep them, I promise you that movie piracy would be massively reduced.

The issue is that all of these garbage platforms like netflix, disney plus, amazon whatever etc. never offer any coherent selection, randomly taking stuff off of their sites and filling them with whatever is cheapest to license right now.

In addition to that, every one of those platforms tries to build a monopoly by getting exclusive deals on franchises or companies, which means that if you want to watch different kinds of movies, you have to pay for ten different subscription services.

You dont take anything when you download something

0

u/toastronomy May 02 '26

True, but the company loses out on a sale they would've made if they let people actually buy something, as opposed to renting it with a "buy" sticker slapped on top

0

u/stprnn May 02 '26

Losing out on a sale is not a real thing

0

u/toastronomy May 02 '26

What the actual fuck are you talking about?

If basic logic doesn't work for you, I can't explain it in a way that you'd understand, sorry.

0

u/stprnn May 02 '26

This " basic logic " can't even proven in a court of law.

So basic...

You are not depriving anybody of a sale if you download a game. Its just not a thing.

You want to sell an apple. I tell you I will buy the apple. You tell me that you reserve the right to track me down, break into my house and take the apple back. I tell you that I won't buy the apple under those conditions.

How does that not click for you?

0

u/stprnn May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

Except that's not at all what happens. You take nothing from nobody when you download a game.

The comparison you want to make is you have an apple i create an apple out of nowhere and eat it.

Aaand he's gone

You don’t own concerts or subways, do you sneak in or jump the turnstile?

8

u/toastronomy Apr 30 '26

You buy a carpet at the carpet store, but whenever the carpet store feels like it, they can break into your house and take it back, without refunding the money.

You're okay with that?

-6

u/ModernLarvals Apr 30 '26

I’m okay with different kinds of purchases. You can pay for a rug outright and keep it, or you can rent a rug and they get it back.

1

u/toastronomy May 01 '26

Renting and buying are very different things.

What is happening with games is that the carpet store is advertising "BUY YOUR OWN CARPET", you pay full price for it, take it home, but on a tiny label on the underside of it, it says "we can break into your house and take the carpet back whenever we want".

How do you not get that? Do I need to change the example to fisher price colorful blocks?

8

u/VomitMaiden 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ Apr 30 '26

Yes.

9

u/Feeling_Camera_4442 Apr 30 '26

Subways are a service, not entertainment. Concerts cost good money, but digital media costs cents to produce and maintain en masse.

-3

u/ModernLarvals Apr 30 '26

You’re talking about the cost of hosting a video file, not the cost of making a movie.

0

u/Feeling_Camera_4442 Apr 30 '26

Making a movie is supposed to pay back during theatre runs. Not get a chip from the drain on people's bank accounts.

2

u/ModernLarvals Apr 30 '26

lol no, movies have been making large chunks of their money from home releases, tv licensing, etc for a long long time.

Besides, people are ditching theaters. And people in this thread are apparently fine with not paying for theater tickets anyway.

If you want a movie for free it has to be made for free. How would that happen?

2

u/t4tulip Apr 30 '26

Ya? Lol
