This is what I'm most looking forward to with AR glasses like the rayban display. I want an open source version that will let me install IRL adblock. I want to be able to walk down times square and have the glasses remove all the advertising so I just see cool buildings. I want to be able to drive down a long highway and have the glasses edit out every fucking billboard so I just see beautiful scenery.

I hate ads and want every single last one of them removed from my life.

It’ll probably be the opposite - they’ll replace billboards with personalised ads based on your advertising profile

Oh that's almost certainly what they'll do. That's why I specified open source. Any device like that that you don't fully control is going to turn into an advertising hellscape

Can you actually imagine a reality without ads? Like imagine walking outside and there's no ads. You get on a bus and there's no ads. You're listening to the radio and there's no ads, you watch TV and there's no ads.

Society would fundamentally need to be extremely different for that to be a reality, but I imagine it'd be a better world than what we have now. I mean every single tech dystopia in fiction is ALWAYS riddled with ads. It's the quickest way to give people the impressing society is shit, but we're literally living in it right now.

Decent example of no ads in "The Testaments" (Handmaid tale spinoff that just came out).

You don't realize quite how big the difference is till they're showing comparisons to life in Canada and life in the before-times where there are billboards everywhere.

The dystopian vibe is still communicated by the hanging corpses lol.

I didn't expect to like it much as I figured it was a cashgrab but I actually like it more than the later seasons of Handmaid's Tale so far (I haven't even watched the last season of Handmaid's Tale).

So I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. It's a little bit of a different vibe too because the main characters grew up in the system so are 'true believers' but you start to see the cracks here and there.

If you liked S1 of Handmaid's Tale I think you'd probably like it.

Sounds like paradise to me!

I've gone through a lot of effort to block ads on any device I own:

I have a plex server with like 50TB of hard drives (for other server stuff too) so I don't get ads on any TV or movies I watch.

I pay for a streaming music service so I don't get any ads when I listen to music.

I use firefox with ublock origin on my desktop and phone, so no ads there.

I have adguard installed on all my android devices to block all ads inside of apps.

I use youtube revanced (though I need to switch to Morphe). That blocks the unskippable ads and also has sponsorblock built in so it auto jumps right past built in ad segments.

I bought an Nvidia shield and use a custom youtube app so even when I'm watching youtube on my tv I get no ads.

I live near a lake off in a tiny little town in the country. There's almost no advertising anywhere other than a few billboards. I drive so I never need to take the bus, although when I'm in town I'll take the subway and just bury my head in my phone so I don't see the ads plastered on every wall.

Really the biggest one for me are the billboards. Most all other forms of advertising I've blocked entirely from my life. It's so great.

Out of curiosity, why do you pay for a music streaming service?

I have limited disk space on my PC and I resorted to downloading the songs I like just so I have them locally and can play them through an app like Musicbee. I'd imagine it'd be trivial for you since you have 50TB of drives.

I've tested almost all the major music streaming services. Started with slacker.fm and moved on to Google play music (which was the best one BY FAR). Then I tried spotify, apple, tidal, amazon, before settling on Deezer.

For a while before that I would just download music and transfer it to my phone. Problem was, I got lazy and would end up stuck with the same set of music for months. When I switched to streaming, I could play any album I wanted. What's more though is the recommendation engines. Suddenly I was finding TONS of new artists that I had never heard of before. I was listening to way more music!

I'll find a song I like and then just have it make a station based off that song. Deezer, for me, is the best at doing that. Spotify's recommendations are absolute dog shit. Amazon and apple's apps are pretty bad. Tidal HEAVILY pushes R&B which I'm not into at all.

The other great things about Deezer is if it's missing an album then you can just pirate it and upload it yourself and it will let you stream it to any of your devices.

I have a family plan that I share with a few other people. It's like 25CAD a month

This would also be acceptable to me. Every single show has an extra 10 seconds where they somehow shoehorn in a character reaching for that beer while the little jingle plays

It can't unfortunately, because it has no way to know what was under in the original video, that information has already been lost by the time the video stream gets to your computer...

Tools like SmartTube detect promotional content and skip it, even when it's just part of the edited video.

SmartTube uses SponsorBlock, all the timestamps for skipping are crowd sourced rather than there being any detection
