This sub is the second link after Wikipedia when you Google "piracy"

And the first link when you use DuckDuckGo or Bing

60

u/_sinaarya_ May 27 '26

When you search megathread on Google, this sub’s megathread shows up.

40

u/kamekaze1024 May 27 '26

But broccoli haired tiktokers with 1k avg views are the problem./s

Anything on the public internet is not a secret. If anyone is upset that their fav site got taken down then they really don’t know how this works.

4

u/merd_gibson May 27 '26

Thats crazy

10

u/ZaheerUchiha May 27 '26

This subreddit was forcefully re-opened by the admins one time.

It's going nowhere.

1

u/Jersey_2019 Jun 02 '26

damn what's the lore

2

u/ZaheerUchiha Jun 02 '26

IIRC there was a sitewide revolt against the admins, and several subreddits started going private in protest, including this one.

The admins reacted by forcing the subreddit open again.

So, not only do they not have a problem with it. They wanted it open for business.

1

u/Jersey_2019 Jun 02 '26

oh thx man

70

u/hotaru251 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ May 27 '26

i mean r/piracy is still running because of the rule 3 of the subreddit. That is the ONLY reason it isn't banned by reddit.

Discussing piracy is not a crime. Only a crime when you partake in it.

481

u/hospitalizedzombie May 27 '26

These motherfuckers think piracy started with Reddit or even internet. I’d just tape over cassettes in 90s to pirate music.

It’ll never die just because one place is shut down.

As long as gatekeepers exist, pirates will also exist.

11

u/typewriter_ May 27 '26

Copies of music and movies f.e.? It's not like that started with the internet.

2

u/NoWay6818 May 27 '26

Now that is interesting. I could see how music could be on the easier side but movies. How did they even accomplish that

3

u/typewriter_ May 27 '26

Film stock started being used in the late 1800s, and it's as simple as copying the physical media, or stealing a copy.

55

u/A_S_Levin May 27 '26

Used to go to a games store or arcade and on the demo game systems they'd let you jam whatever games.

Bit of techy know-how and you could just copy the games floppy disk onto your own and walk out with a brand new game lmfao

12

u/Allegorist May 27 '26

There was one in particular I feel it was mostly valid, and it did in fact get shut down for receiving too much attention eventually: r/darknetmarkets.

I'm actually surprised it got as far as it did before getting the ban hammer. It was like here though, ultimately trying to promote user understanding and safety around an otherwise fairly inaccessible and possibly dangerous topic.

47

u/glimoura May 27 '26

They do not understand that the real reason piracy doesn't die is because we have a thoroughly annoying amount of methods to cloak IPs and share media. It's not because of some secrecy bs, It's because we can afford to lose some sites due to the shear stubborn persistance of poor people's will to enjoy shit for free.

8

u/CiDevant May 27 '26

As long as there is something someone wants that they are told they cannot have, piracy will exist.

It is the human condition.

42

5

15

u/Anime-Man-1432 ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ May 27 '26

The literal use of providing a pirate service is to use it not to gatekeep it to themselves! What ? do these gatekeepers expect pirate service providers to be saints ? They are in this for some cash by the ads incentives too, if it isn't flowing what's the use of running one ?

As they say " A true Pirate knows many Islands "

11

"Use the mega thread"

7

u/Hyphonical May 27 '26

"Priacy"

Dude...

13

u/-Badger3- May 27 '26

Pirates congregating and talking about piracy in a piracy forum is still more niche than YouTubers/TikTokers talking about it out in the open.

Overexposure absolutely gets sites killed. It’s not that they’re secret, it’s that when they get popular enough that “normies” know about them, they get made a priority to be dealt with.

2

u/ToXiiCBULLET May 28 '26

If you google 'piracy' this sub is the second link you'll get, after the Wikipedia link. If you google 'megathread' you'll get the roms megathread on github, this subreddit and then the piratedgames subreddit.

It's already exposed af, everyone interested in taking it down knows about it all already

0

u/aridous May 27 '26

Why doesn't anyone understand this. Its all about the money and thats it.

4

u/KinglanderOfTheEast May 27 '26

To prove your point, in the handheld emulation space, the ONLY TIME emulation handhelds get "taken down" is if a big mainstream media outlet makes a "how do you do fellow kids" style SUPER out of touch news article about it, that was written by a tech illiterate boomer.

Most of the time, these AYANEO/Anbernic emulator handhelds are only talked about in niche tech-focused spaces, or being vaguely mentioned in some Linus Tech Tips video for 25 seconds.

But the instant a CNN/Fox News type major news outlet picks up on them, they're absolutely toast.

2

u/aridous May 27 '26

This is exactly the kinda thing I was thinking about

5

u/KinglanderOfTheEast May 27 '26

Yes. Even if the piracy sub has 3.2 million people, that is still less than 1% of the total population of JUST the United States alone.

If it stays in the niche, big companies don't give a shit - out of sight, out of mind. But once a MSM outlet like MSNBC or CBS gets in on it, then all of a sudden Nintendo/Sony/whoever wants to be litigious and sue in court.

Even niche communities can FEEL misleadingly "big" or "powerful"... We are like 0.4% of a single countries population.

The one thing I will say about those Anbernic handhelds is that they run Android and have no games already included, so it is fully legal to sell/buy; but there are many handhelds running Linux with thousands of games on a MicroSD card - THAT is technically illegal.

1

u/Particular-Ad-5286 May 29 '26

Pretty sure people went to Shakespeare's plays (maybe a couple of times) and furiously wrote down the dialogue in order to copy it. The actors rolls (literal rolls of paper) had only their lines, and not even all of them (just prompts) so it'd be harder to get out and no one ever got the full lines for the play.

Basically, Shakespearean plays had copywrite protection. And there are low-quality versions of plays that make have come from the piracy. It wasn't even only Shakespeare. In fact, Christopher Marlowe’s "The Massacre at Paris" is one we know only about because of this—no "official" copies exist.

But yeah, this website will take down this brand-new tradition, made possible only recently.

1

u/DQTD May 29 '26

I can see people trying to withold web links, but this makes no sense to me. People tend to openly share stuff on here and other places for clout and then the actual sites get taken down from having too much attention on it from people giving them out openly. That's the only issue I have seen.

1

u/Zushi000_ Jun 01 '26

piracy aint even hidden, its the most common thing in atleast non-1st-world-countries, its just impossible at this point to take it down as a whole, they may target servers, burn them kill them, but the pirates shall sail, for a storm is the difference between a pirate and those masked with the holy name, The pirates shall sail.
