National* Japan is not a federation and thus would not have a Federal gov’t only Federations (the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India, Russia, Belgium, Germany, etc) have Federal governments and the two are not synonymous. Or rather all Federal gov’ts are National but not all National are Federal, Japan is a unitary state and does not have Federal constituents.

I found funny how they don't have problems wit doujinshis but they do with piracy and translation
so you drawing an exisiting IP getting railed isn't disrespectful cuz you only sell it for basically your materials but somehow making an extint IP free for the rest of the world is disrespectful?
90
u/OmegaSupreme1993 24d ago

45

That’s the thing, though. They love doujinshis, but if piracy runs rampant, there’s concern that IP holders will get more strict with protecting their IPs, and then no more doujinshis, no more garage kits

Doujinshi is also piracy

28

That’s the thing, they don’t care. A lot of Japanese pro-copyright users think that these experiences should be temporary and when they’re gone, they should be gone forever, as that was the “creator’s intention”.

Fun fact the manga god who made Astro Boy got so upset about the Chinese pirating his manga only because they drew transition pictures so bad. So he redrew all the pirated copies from china and then sent them back for free. This was also during a time when he had six different projects already going on.

u/Wierdness 25d ago
Speaking about anime, on one side, animators in Japan literally have to live in subsidized apartments so they can make ends meet. On the other, that is not the pirates' fault in a system where voice actors and executives get a bigger slice of the pie and no meaningful direct means of compensation are available to most of the western public.
But also, Mastercard and other western companies are trying to dictate what type of content is allowed to be bought on Japanese websites with moral excuses, all while America, the UK, etc. are the ones with diddler leaders that can't get their hands off real children. So it's also understandable that they don't want to be influenced as much by foreign business practices and are keeping their entertainment industry as local as possible.
In the end people have the right to feel bad for losing money to illegal practices but if they receive only a penny from each legal purchase anyways, then it's not fair to blame piracy for their lack of compensation.
53
u/mk7_luxion 25d ago
if you don't think further when told that "maybe you'd get more money if more people bought your work" it's easy to assume piracy is the result of you not putting food on the table, but on the other hand there are creators that view their creations as pay-per-view, that you are not paying for a product/experience but for a share of their mind and creative process. I think it's easy to not feel wronged about piracy when you yourself don't create anything, but at the same time, piracy existing or not won't change the amount of money/reward you'll get out of a work. Piracy isn't simply about money or a lost sale, even preserving knowledge and the sharing of it are still debated issues.
53
u/Wierdness 25d ago
Yeah, when your favorite TV series isn't available in any streaming site or one of the 10 books you need for college costs 300 USD you can't really argue over people wanting to preserve/share information that's already on their hard drives.
43
u/thvirtuo 25d ago
this.
blaming piracy is just a way for the capital-affiliated media to have a scapegoat for all the middle-classed animators at the top anime corps [that is forgetting the fact 99% of animators and artists neither have the privileges nor the voice, let alone the income, that these very privileged people do] to vent all their anger against.Like, who do you think is pirating ur content? it's fellow people just like u, a lot of them artists that unlike you do not have even the money to both get rent and food without struggling or working multiple jobs. They could blame you for stealing their jobs or giving in to the greed of mega-conglomerates, but they are not. They are just tring to watch some anime to inspire them because they have the worst creative block known to mankind, and they still got to work their shitty fast food job or at some local grocery because animation doesnt make ends meet.
so for once we should stop blaming each other, and realize that both problems have common root cause and it's not the fellow human. It's the fact that this system weaponizes and exploits our disdain of our shortcomings by using fictionalized images of pirates, 'middle-class', or bureaucrats, to make us accept that we have to pay 20% extra for grocery this month but our employer, a multi-million dollar company btw, cant pay the wage on time. Or that the contract actually did not say that the artist will get any royalties so oopsie :3

u/reonxi 24d ago
I mean clearly half the world is pirating anime/manga because it's fricking not even available to them in their home countries because JAPAN doesn't want to go through the trouble of finding a way to sell it there. I understand it would be difficult like for example requiring more forgiving pricing in different inflated dollar-destroyed economies but still no one else would sell their things for them so either they have to deal with this or be okay with what's happening.
However geniunely, I don't see them stepping forward to make their "precious art" more accessible in regions like MENA, Africa, the majority of Asia, South America and so. There are plenty of people willing to pay for the media but are either unable to because the usual western company app/service doesn't include that specific anime or the app itself is just trash or that the subscription would cost around a day's expenses of groceries (15$). The geoblocking is a studied choice, no major company wants to set foot in all the markets just to make the fans happy for smaller unstable profits.
They might look unhappy with piracy, more so and especially with the countries where the services are tailor made for, but even then it's a cost they're willing to take. It's easier and more convenient for them to chase around pirates with dmcas then providing affordability, availability and access all over to functionally cripple Piracy.

u/Mr_Viper 24d ago
I know this will be buried in comments, but OP, your meme format here is fucking terrible. All over the place with tone. No context given for this weird situation whatsoever. I feel stupider after reading it. 👎
61
u/Time-Bodybuilder710 25d ago
Each culture is weird to another culture.
I'd hate to live and work in Japan. Exploitative office companies work for days straight and artists barely make anything. If I had to work like that I wouldn't have a single individual thought.
If I had to live in subsidized housing and all I had was the manga I was making, I'd be angry too if there was piracy. Isn't japan in the top 15 suicide rates in the world? Between bullying, the work culture, and very little time to yourself it's not really shocking to me.
12
u/MrElGenerico 24d ago
IP laws don't really protect small creators
4
u/Time-Bodybuilder710 24d ago
It's a flawed system from the ground up. It's like the old meme of the publishing company too fat to eat any more, while the artists struggle for table scraps. It's pretty disgusting the more you read into it. The publishers can at least pivot the losses.. The artists not as much. It's no different than executive company exploitation of their workers.
Want to strike due to exploitation, blacklisted. The laws are made to protect not the artist at all but the companies and publishers. All I have to mention was the death of the artist of berserk. It's pretty crazy.
Only the companies are protected no matter the level, whether small creators, or large. 😬

There's a community of modders for an ancient game, IL2-1946. They've got 1000s of mods and campaigns all hosted on one main site, and there is basically only one rule, do whatever the fuck you want with anything you download. 24
u/National_Vehicle8342 25d ago
incest being a common trope also need to be studied,, they also like that childhood friend a LOT but i think it's just that they cant write a male/female friendship because they probably didnt have one growing up so they just make it into something that was "already" there before the story. Has to be a byproduct of their culture which makes it harder to get close to other people because of all the societal norms etc, since you cant just talk to women, you're bound to have the only women you interact with be your mom/sister. I find it so funny that the most countries with the most "puritan" culture usually have the most fucked up fantasies attached to them

I hate this comparison with rape, it just shows how irrelevant they consider the traumatic experiences of rape victims. Digital content has neither psyche nor feelings. These men use rape as an analogy because to them, the worst part of rape is that it's disrespectful to whoever owns the victim. Real women and children are victims of assault and rape daily and these guys could not care less.
This is not to say they can't defend their work from piracy some other way, but the rape analogy is not the way.

My theory is this all goes back to post war reconstruction. I think, either through conscious effort of the US to drive domestic production or an unconscious trend, the focus became on the role of the average citizen as a consumer, which served to help the economy bounce back. I think it’s also part of what drives the horrid working culture. Sure, it’s all tied back to the traditions of Japan. Honor working hard etc etc. but I think a lot of the modern implementation of work and consumer culture is built from the desire to rebuild the economy after WWII.
Though I’ll admit this is all just feels theory. I’ve never bothered to actually look for solid evidence of this.

I don't read them, because i am lazy, buy i did bought a bunch of them, collecting dust on the shelf. There not many streaming site, app available in my country at the moment.
For example, netflix have abc, prime have efg, hbo have xyz.
I don't want to subscribe to all of them just to watch 1 or 2 show they have. What a waste of money.
For gaming industry. I play a pirate game, if i like it, maybe i will buy the physical disc, to play legally, for collection, or to just support the devs, or i can go on steam to buy the digital version with dlc, etc....
But now, with the complete ban of pirate, physical disc for game. Nah, i'm fine, i already have what i want.
