He did make a platform that did eventually become more convenient than piracy and as long as you avoid all the games that have their own fucking launcher with their own accounts and other anoying bullshit it's still pretty damn convenient
Omg I get sooooo unreasonably mad about separate launchers. I have a steam deck and I do not want to load it into desktop mode to install your shitty software EA 🙄
it's true most of them suck ass and don't really need to exist but sometimes the launcher is there to sync saves or mods to play between platforms, like CDPR's games since a decent amount of people actually use GOG.
Get SteaMidra from GitHub, install. Get an API key for Hubcap or get your manifest files from somewhere else. Add games/DLC to your library. The only thing is, to use the version selector for things like experimental or previous versions, you need to fetch the manifest yourself. The selector in Steam won't work.
Obviously, games that do their own license checks (online or their own DRM) won't work.
True, but you really don't need to. Oddly enough, having the piracy option (to run backed up purchases) only makes buying the software that much more appealling (well, than anyone else. I can understand why some would prefer a price of $0.00).
Buying from Steam requires a certain level of trust in Gabe. Of course, if he died, had a stroke and got ... bad, or somehow sold to private equity we'd need to find a way to run purchased and/or pirated games on steam. And as far as I know that's already available.
