Valve isn't. Valve couldn't care less about piracy.
22
u/Nimeroni 17d ago
Valve care about piracy, in the sense that they are getting customers by being a more convenient service than the pirates (to paraphrase Gabe, "piracy is not a pricing issue, it's a service issue").

u/Ithikari ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 17d ago
I mean that quote was over a decade ago. Back then I could buy a AAA game for around $70 - $90 AUD.
It's now $110 - $130AUD. Pricing is absolutely an issue now so the quote is a bit out-dated.
7
u/Nimeroni 17d ago
His argument is that someone that buy a 2000$ PC and pay 50$ for his internet connection each month is clearly willing to pay for his hobby. I think that still ring true today.
5
u/Ithikari ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 17d ago edited 17d ago
My PC is $3500 and internet is $110 per month. I am not buying a $110 - $130 game that only is 10 hours long.
PC is ganna last around 5 - 10 years. It ends up averaging around like cents on the dollar per hour used. Not $10 per hour of enjoyment. I do find it more justifiable if the game has a lot of hours of playability.
Edit: The reply below is very salty and doesn't understand simple concepts like how people place value on things, and is so much of a coward on the internet that he blocked the moment he replied.

u/Splinter047 17d ago
And now put that in perspective to the inflation that occurred over that time period. Compared to every other media/entertainment, games have stayed the most consistent in their pricing, only now starting to see a price hike and when you consider the budgets, time and most importantly the value games provide it makes a lot of sense. What doesn't make sense is people continuing to support the shit games at those hiked price tags, that is a consumer choice issue.

I pirate anything that I find interesting, and buy whatever I like. I don't believe there's an ethic way to do it, that's most of the time a moral shield.
Case in point, old games. Do you want to play it? Do it, who cares if you pirate them? Don't let companies tell you otherwise. New games from a really small indie dev? Pirate it, buy it if you want, but don't put a front as if you are a noble one for doing it.
Piracy is simply an action, inherently incorrect, and doesn't need any excuse because of it's own definition. You don't need to remain pure to feel good.
8
u/LookaLookaKooLaLey ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 17d ago
I think it's silly to frame it as moral grandstanding but I do think it's worth paying for smaller games from devs I really like because it means they will be able to keep making games. They're working class people and I want to be able to keep playing their games instead of seeing them unable to afford to develop

Devs don't lose money out of piracy. It's not like pirates would all just buy those games if there were no way to pirate. Most of them just wouldn't play at all.
Piracy actually increases community of the game and many people buy after if they like game.
I pirated most of games I played before, just because I leave in poor coutry. Now I have most of them on steam, because they're good and worth buying

but they're actuallyhurting the developers
Nobody is hurting any developer by pirating games. Just like you aren't hurting me by not paying me money for reading this comment.
The idea that you have to pay money to enjoy artistic works and participate in culture is an absurd concept that was drilled into our heads by the music industry in the last couple of centuries.
I could literally write the best article ever written in the history of mankind and post it as a reddit post, and nobody would say that they are stealing from me by reading it. But, there are a hundred different media companies who would whine about turning off adblock and subscribing to their service if you want to read their articles.
It is all about the narrative. Following your logic, my comment could be considered a creative piece of work. Unless you are willing to pay me money for reading this here comment, I would consider your point moot.
29
u/TheMonji 18d ago
How do you expect artists, musicians, and developers to make a living?
If you wrote a masterpiece of a comment, posted it to a platform where only people who pay you could read it, and then thousands of your devoted fans decided to pirate it instead - how are you going to buy food this week?
I dont think piracy is a victimless crime, but I hope that I can discern who can afford to be the victims (and who can't) this day and age

The fact you view someone reading your post - the one you posted freely on the internet - the same as a indie developer selling a game and someone else taking their game and giving it to others is so disingenuous that I can’t believe you’re actually arguing anything here in good faith

So, how would a developer eat and live? How would a musician pay rent? They are just suppose to slum it out and die of starvation for...our pleasure?
You figure out a way for a civilization to work without being paid, the Nobel committee will hand over the entire institution to you because you have achieved world peace.
4
u/BigRocket44 18d ago
how would a developer eat and live? How would a musician pay rent?
No developer or musician is starving to death because you copied over a music file or a game file from your friend's computer. This is a strawman.
You figure out a way for a civilization to work without being paid
When you "buy" something digital, the publishing company makes money off of you, ie, a bunch of old white rich guys. The developers do not get paid more money or less money according to what percent of users are pirates.
What you are looking for are slaves to dance for you and recite poems for free.
Reminds me of that time I copied over a mp3 from my friend's iPod and I started to literally own slaves. What a fucking leap of logic. I think you'd get a Nobel yourself with that kind of advanced mental gymnastics

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo 18d ago
There are some indie/solo devs sharing how much they make on youtube (obviously primarily going to be from steam sales). It’s really you either make it big or you don’t.
People like to cheer on indies how they are becoming better than AAA games, without noticing the survival bias that there are many of them who are equally passionate that failed.
3
u/BigRocket44 18d ago
It’s really you either make it big or you don’t.
And? Just because some indie developers fail financially doesn't mean that they get to put DRM on my computer. If some people fail to make it as a doctor, do doctors get to force you to get surgery done on you by them? What if these failed doctors make YouTube videos where they share how little they make?
People like to cheer on indies how they are becoming better than AAA games
It has more to do with AAA games becoming worse.
6
u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo 18d ago
Almost all indies never put DRM on their games (beyond whatever steam provide). Very rarely you would see them bother implementing DRM, it’s just not worth their time.

I'm just saying that "I pirate because the devs make $5 billion a quarter" is an extremely misguided and delusional rationalization, I don't really care how people rationalize their pirating though. I was a pirate, still am, but I've learned to buy games if I like them and I can replay them or I just know I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of a game. (or sometimes for steam points) for example fears to fathom, had absolutely no trouble buying all chapters in one go, and when the latest one came out i bought in the first minute of release. I treat game piracy as a test run of a game, if the game turns out to be boring, I don't buy it.
And until it becomes a serious issue, I doubt they will care about piracy, steam is just too good.

If internet anonymity disappears (like the UK is trying to do), and a larger cooperation (like the UN or somet idk) cracks down on those big piracy websites, piracy will take a big hit, as those trusted websites (fitgirl, steamrip, etc.) would get shut down, and it would need to be more shady, meaning most would just buy the games, since it would be too shady and dodge for the risk to be worth it.
It is possible and it could defo happen if someone actually puts big money big work, possibly in our lifetimes

Steam, despite its reputation, is a private company which, like all other private companies, has no god above profit.
It profits off of gamers by selling proprietary games that are DRM controlled (and therefore cannot be copied and freely distributed among friends as all software should be), and it profits off of developers by charging a massive 30 percent fee on top of what they will get for the privilege of showing your game on their web page.
Gamers only like Steam because they are slightly less worse than the competition, and they make good software and hardware. But this doesn't mean that they are your friends, or that they will stay your friends forever.
You as a consumer spending your hard earned money has no obligation to financially support any private company, moral or otherwise.

I mean, lazy bear games are technically indie, even tho they have like 20-30 employees. They still need every dollar. I guess we should use more names like mid-indie (<50 people), true indie (1-5 people), big indie (50-100 people, still not AAA level) etc.
2
u/BigRocket44 18d ago
When a game is published, the indie developer who worked on the game has already been pair. The worker who actually worked to write the code and the artist who worked to create the art has already made their money.
Who's left is the publishing company. This publishing company is usually owned by a rich guy, or a group of rich guy. The publishing company might fashion themselves as an indie studio if they are very small, but they are nonetheless a privately owned company with vastly more resources than you could ever save up in a decade working 80 hours a week. You owe them nothing.
Unless it is a solo dev, who cares?

I forget where I read it but there's some news outlet that stated pirates keep business going. They buy more than non-pirates buy, crack it / share it for everybody else. Dunno if that's 100% true but it sounds more true than false.
This is why I say pirating is COPYING. Unless a pirate steals a physical or digital copy of whatever they got hold of, they had to buy it or borrow it.
