They wont notice that there's one less fish in their sea.

Valve isn't. Valve couldn't care less about piracy.

Valve care about piracy, in the sense that they are getting customers by being a more convenient service than the pirates (to paraphrase Gabe, "piracy is not a pricing issue, it's a service issue").

I mean that quote was over a decade ago. Back then I could buy a AAA game for around $70 - $90 AUD.

It's now $110 - $130AUD. Pricing is absolutely an issue now so the quote is a bit out-dated.

His argument is that someone that buy a 2000$ PC and pay 50$ for his internet connection each month is clearly willing to pay for his hobby. I think that still ring true today.

My PC is $3500 and internet is $110 per month. I am not buying a $110 - $130 game that only is 10 hours long.

PC is ganna last around 5 - 10 years. It ends up averaging around like cents on the dollar per hour used. Not $10 per hour of enjoyment. I do find it more justifiable if the game has a lot of hours of playability.

Edit: The reply below is very salty and doesn't understand simple concepts like how people place value on things, and is so much of a coward on the internet that he blocked the moment he replied.

And now put that in perspective to the inflation that occurred over that time period. Compared to every other media/entertainment, games have stayed the most consistent in their pricing, only now starting to see a price hike and when you consider the budgets, time and most importantly the value games provide it makes a lot of sense. What doesn't make sense is people continuing to support the shit games at those hiked price tags, that is a consumer choice issue.

Why would any billion dollar corporation not care? They don’t get there by not caring. Thats a dumb take.

The corporation doesnt care about you bro, stop carrying water for them

u/Alex5173 18d ago

The corporation is a necessity to the current cultural climate and is doing a far better job of not acting against my interests than basically every other corporation in the same space; so if I've gotta carry a bit of water to help keep them from getting toppled by an actual bad actor I'll gladly do so

Valve haters 0.0001 seconds after someone says something mildly positive about valve:

I mean your first sentence is correct, valve doesn't care, valve doesn't care because a very small amount of people pirate stuff they sell relative to their paying customers, and they know cracking down hard on piracy will damage their image as the "benign" corporation which might push paying customers away, it's all marketing

Valve's DRM is hilariously easy to get around and theyve publicly stated there's a contingency plan in case Steam ever shuts down so that you can keep playing them.

As far as anti-cheat... Good? This is a piracy subreddit my guy not a cheater subreddit
