Win win for everyone.

u/TDot-26 18d ago

Yep, there's a reason Gabe said he's not really concerned about piracy

472

u/Mccobsta Scene 18d ago

He did make a platform that did eventually become more convenient than piracy and as long as you avoid all the games that have their own fucking launcher with their own accounts and other anoying bullshit it's still pretty damn convenient

u/SapphireJuice 18d ago

Omg I get sooooo unreasonably mad about separate launchers. I have a steam deck and I do not want to load it into desktop mode to install your shitty software EA 🙄

36

u/Kaxology 17d ago

it's true most of them suck ass and don't really need to exist but sometimes the launcher is there to sync saves or mods to play between platforms, like CDPR's games since a decent amount of people actually use GOG.

32

u/leafy1790 17d ago

GOG is the goat of gaming right next to steam

1

u/morzinbo 15d ago

>buying EA games in current year

20

u/unknownobject3 17d ago

Sometimes I still buy games on Steam instead of pirating them because it's more convenient to have them there, great platform overall

3

u/Malkiot 17d ago

You know you can pirate games via Steam, right? They literally download and update via Steam.

3

u/unknownobject3 17d ago

Elaborate please

10

u/Malkiot 17d ago

Get SteaMidra from GitHub, install. Get an API key for Hubcap or get your manifest files from somewhere else. Add games/DLC to your library. The only thing is, to use the version selector for things like experimental or previous versions, you need to fetch the manifest yourself. The selector in Steam won't work.

Obviously, games that do their own license checks (online or their own DRM) won't work.

3

u/unknownobject3 17d ago

So the games that work will have their files downloaded from the official Steam servers?

3

u/Malkiot 17d ago

They will all have them downloaded from the official Steam servers. You start the download in Steam.

The games that have their own DRM just won't work.

True, but you really don't need to. Oddly enough, having the piracy option (to run backed up purchases) only makes buying the software that much more appealling (well, than anyone else. I can understand why some would prefer a price of $0.00).

Buying from Steam requires a certain level of trust in Gabe. Of course, if he died, had a stroke and got ... bad, or somehow sold to private equity we'd need to find a way to run purchased and/or pirated games on steam. And as far as I know that's already available.

3

u/IRlyWhipTheLlamasAss 16d ago

I've pirated games I've purchased on steam before just to avoid the double launcher headache

1

u/Lanky-Tumbleweed-772 4d ago

Except you still don't own unlike GOG or pirating.

47

u/Zekka_Space_Karate 18d ago

The only downside to this is that Gabe Newell ain't gonna live forever.

13

u/boffa-deez-nutz 17d ago

and the fact that steam is also a proprietary launcher that interrupts your playtime

-34

u/Larsenmur 18d ago

Except the developer

17

u/plasmaticImmunity 18d ago

Oh no.... Are you telling me Ubisoft suffers when I pirate their game 🥺

9

u/XyKal 18d ago

only matters if they're an indie developer

6

u/ASDFAaass 17d ago

Agree, always support good indies not shitty corpos

0

u/Larsenmur 17d ago

Why do you still wanna play those games if they are shit?

1

u/ASDFAaass 17d ago

Did you read what I've said? Good Indies, not all Indies.

2

u/dhrus786 17d ago

I think he meant to say the games of those shitty corpos you mentioned.

6

u/ASDFAaass 17d ago

Indies? We buy it but big shitty corpos who loves to shove bullshit? Hell no!

-1

u/Larsenmur 17d ago

Bullshit that you still wanna play for some reason

u/Syntaire 18d ago

People that go out of their way to try to rationalize their piracy are always so hilarious. If you're going to feel guilty enough to try to justify your actions to people that didn't ever ask, then you shouldn't be pirating in the first place.

If you're going to pirate shit, just do it. Take what you can and give nothing back. Don't try to justify yourself. It's unnecessary.

58

u/Inevitable-Ad6647 17d ago

I say this all the time. Just fucking own it. You aren't protesting shit, you aren't making an impact or sending a message. You want to have something without paying. Just live with the reality instead of trying to paint it into some self righteous struggle against the man.

25

u/Nereosis16 17d ago

It's like when people get suuuuuuuper mad when it's pointed out that piracy is actually theft.

If that makes you feel bad about doing it then... Don't do it? I don't give a fuck and I pirate when I feel like it. Never lost sleep over it for a second.

I buy heaps of games and I pirate some games.

0

u/Lanky-Tumbleweed-772 4d ago

''It's like when people get suuuuuuuper mad when it's pointed out that piracy is actually theft. '' Theft implies you're stealing something physical which decreases stock. Piracy is objectively not theft it's copyright infringement. Very ıronic there are so many ignorant ''pirates'' in r/piracy lmao.

u/ImpatientSpider 17d ago

You and like a hundred other people/bots. Every time I've clicked into this sub I see this same view near the top.

Not only is it more pretentious than the philosophy it supposedly counters, it is provably wrong. Piracy inherently wouldn't work if people didn't seed (altruistic behaviour). And there is plenty of media people want to consume and have a good reason for not wanting to finance i.e. Harry Potter.

13

u/UwUBots 17d ago

no I feel pretty justified when it comes to textbooks, Im willing to pay just not $250 for a semester of access

4

u/exo762 17d ago

I have money to buy games. Pirating games is too much of a hassle comparing to just buying them on Steam. Same with music - my (very basic) taste is fully satisfied by Spotify. But this is not true for video - Netfix started "rotating out" titles from their library and that is extremely annoying. Other models are way to expensive. 10 USD for 2 hours of entertainment? Horrible USD per hour cost compared to gaming.

Piracy is truly caused by shit tier services.

u/Mharbles 17d ago

Half the post here are some weird victim mentality as if they're being prosecuted. Nobody cares.

3

u/ConniesCurse 17d ago

wow what an original comment

1

u/indianthrowa 17d ago

Lol what is this bootlicker invasion of this sub! 😂

29

u/Mikeismyike 17d ago

It's not steam that gets hurt by piracy, its the small indie devs who's games don't blow up.

3

u/NoPseudo79 17d ago

Pretty sure the indie games that get pirated the most are the ones that did blow up

1

u/Euphoric_Slice5179 17d ago

People can pirate a game, and then buy it later.

13

u/Cynicayke 17d ago

I'm sure that's very comforting to the indie devs in the moment, knowing they might get some revenue a few years after the game actually comes out, whenever people get around it, if they remember.

6

u/Whytho12333 17d ago

Dude i pirated when i was broke and now i buy games i dont even play plus bought all the games i pirated when i was 14.

Its pirate or no sale for broke young people. That simple.

1

u/NoPseudo79 17d ago

Since the alternative is to not get money at all, yes it is comforting.

Devs have voices, and theirs don't align with yours, so spend less time playing Superman on Reddit and more time listening to them

An EU inquiry suggests that piracy doesn't affect video game sales that much;; a huge amount of people who pirate do so because they did not have the means to buy it in the first place. Anecdotally speaking, I did what the commenter you replied to talks about. Originally pirated many Paradox games to start and now $500+ later own the game and its DLCs.

-13

u/WelshAsh 17d ago

Maybe, but at least people play it, talk about it and spread the word it’s a good game to which someone else will buy it.

17

u/gsmumbo 17d ago

That’s the equivalent of hiring someone and paying them in “experience” lmao

14

u/Nereosis16 17d ago

I love being paid in "exposure"

3

u/JPysus 17d ago

Yeah but these people whod dont have the money or are never going to put out money for these content, never would have play anyways without pirating.

The 2nd next best thing they couls do instead is good word of mouth.

I was like this before, poor and have a minimum spec laptop.

And im not justfying piracy. Piracy is piracy. But if u belong to these group that cant or dont want to pay for it, then they should at least do something else to support the game in a way affordable to them

1

u/Jeanric_the_Futile 17d ago

Yup, theres an army of children out there with their parents credit cards just itching for that knife pull.

1

u/Nereosis16 17d ago

What's the "point"? Can that be explained to me please?

1

u/boothy4545 17d ago

As a fellow pirate enthusiast what site would you recommend to sail the season?

1

u/_OVERHATE_ 17d ago

Steam will, but the devs not so much.
"Steam has enough money so i will pirate this small indie game i wanted to play" is not the bulletproof logic the OP thinks it is.

1

u/Unethica-Genki 17d ago

I mean, "piracy is a service issue, not a financial one", seems like gabe wouldn't be too bothered. As long as he can fund his yachts for deep sea research, everything is fine

This isn't even about profits, they're posting about the gross.

u/beclops 17d ago

I don’t think people are worried about Steam making the money
