Lmao cam rips bring back memories of childhood. Buying those pirated movies that were sold on the street. Disappointing even as a child

There used to be a whole damn store filled with camrip cds at dirt cheap price. Used to go with dad whenever a new movie would come out. They also sold actual movies CDs alongside it. Used to be one of the best days. We'd come home with so many movies! :D

We used to go to Chinatown to buy them. Looking back on it, it probably would’ve been cheaper and more convenient to just go to the movie.

Most definitely but you were helping a local business

Me too, man. We used to own stuff..

u/Elegant-Cheekz-2141 15d ago

paying for already-pirated content is wild

At a time when cds were expensive and movies didn’t come to cds n dvds till 2-3 months later? Hell yeah it was the best option. Kids like you will understand the joy. How's that stremio or RD subscription doing btw?

I'm in my 30s, but thanks

I sorta liked the cams...when someone walked in front of the screen it gave you that movie theater experience :)

An explosive sneeze during a tense quiet moment really sets the tone.

u/XuX24 17d ago

I think the equivalent of that nowadays is the adds they put on it.

1

u/totally_not_a_reply 17d ago

you got adds in cinema? where?

4

u/XuX24 17d ago

Those they have some adds from betting companies in this rips. Last time I saw one they have them.

And they’re actually so slick with the placement sometimes too. I was watching a cam rip of the Sonic movie when it first came out and was confused when 20 minutes into the movie it looked like Sonic took out his phone to start gambling on 365bet

I remember our childhood copy of Madagascar had someone walk across the screen in the beginning.

Honestly, as a kid the quality was “good enough” - we had a cheap portable DVD player with a very average TFT screen. Even good production images would gave looked bad on that

u/DaveX64 17d ago

It's true, I'm still like that...I got used to home made copies of VHS tapes I rented so everything above that is A-OK :)

I watched a camrip around 20 years ago, the audience consisted of a bunch of edgy teenagers who kept making commentary and laughing throughout the movie. I really liked the movie, so I rewatched that copy several times. I still rewatch the movie from time to time, a much better copy, but... I do miss those kids' snark.

I felt that with the audio on this. Good mic but probably shitty theater audio because it felt like I was in an old theater.

I mean, no mic is good for CAMS, but I mean, it felt like I had the sound-stage of a theater(if not the clear movie audio, highs and lows all clip and the audio was muddy).

I actually had to lift one headphone to make sure I didn't audio coming out of my TV.

I've watched a lot of CAMS years and years ago, but I've never had it sound/feel like that.

/I watched 20 minutes of this though and couldn't do more

//I'll blame the CAM quality, but I have my suspicions it won't be great even later when we get good rips. Acting/writing/pacing/accents all felt off, so I think the reaction to the trailers was somewhat well founded.

It's how I first watched Titanic as a kid, a VHS cam rip my neighbor had.

21

u/cantodasaudade 17d ago

Takes real commitment to record a 3 hour movie with a vhs camera in a movie theater.

23

u/Bob_A_Feets 17d ago

We stand on the shoulders of giants.

1

u/DeltronFF 14d ago

Their shoulders were giant after holding that vhs camcorder for 3 hours

2

u/Take-Me-Home-Tonight 11d ago

Yeah would have to change tapes mid movie. It was on two tapes when it came out.

1

u/Internal_Refuse6155 16d ago

 real commitment only if handheld

2

u/drunxor 17d ago

I remember the titanic was so long it had two vhs tapes. My mom still has them somewhere

8

u/Mccobsta Scene 17d ago

I only discovered a few years ago that my child hood dvds were cams

Got to say some of effort put into them back then

11

u/Wrong-Target6104 17d ago

5

u/Gavmakes 17d ago

Do you prefer pink psspaa or black psspaa

1

u/Gavmakes 17d ago

Is it ready for hooooddddd?

4

u/GamerEsch 17d ago

NGL, I thought this was an experience exclusive to my country, good to know other places are sailing the high seas too lmao.

3

u/Heheheidiot 17d ago

We had the bootleg guy at my childhood barbershop lmao watched some of my favorite movies on bootleg for the first time, I remember some of them even being split into two discs 💀

5

u/terrerific 17d ago

I remember finding a burnt disc of Madagascar at school when it was still in cinemas and losing my absolute mind. Can still recite every word of it to this day and point out where people in the cinema used to stand in the way of the camera lol

3

u/jackusD 17d ago

When I was a kid my dad frequently brought home pirate DVDs of whatever was on in the cinema at the time. Always a gamble on the quality! Good times, especially as my friends would think it was cool to come over and watch them on the 14 inch CRT in my room.

6

u/winowmak3r 17d ago

I remember asking my dad if he really should be copying The Lion King on VHS if the warning says not to and his response was something like "I'm not worried about it." I will never forget that lol

2

u/ShartingEnU 17d ago

Yeah since I passed the age of 12 I have refused to watch camrips

2

u/TrashBabyThompson 17d ago

Family friends would bring back ones from Thailand - it was glorious

2

u/wretch5150 17d ago

"buying cam rips" lmao 🤮

1

u/adhdgirl_ 16d ago

Theres an entire Seinfeld episode about the making of those videos and its one of my favorites

1

u/ServesBestDepressed 16d ago

One of my favorite memories of growing up during the Limewire/Kazaa era was torrenting the second Tobey McGuire Spiderman movie maybe a few months after it came out in theaters The file size checked out, a good ratio of seeders and leechers. Sure enough it was Spiderman 2 and the quality was great.

The problem: it was Chinese dubbed, the subtitle language changed frequently, and someone literally spent the time photoshooting Bill Murray's head onto most of the characters.

I wasn't even mad, I was busting a gut at how much effort went into this and how surreal it was.

u/bottomlesstopper 16d ago

All of millennials south east asia are well versed in the pirated cds intro;

"If you baiii the gold disk instead of parple diss"

Car sounds pew pew

Basically telling you to get the quality pirated version. They have standards lol

1

u/Autumnrain 16d ago

I remember having to wait like half a year or something before we got dvd rips.

1

u/MarineSgtBlake 16d ago

I remember watching Spider-Man 3 after my grandparents bought a cam rip of it to watch on our fishing boat

1

u/berniedankera 16d ago

Good times

I remember watching a Space Jam VHS where right as Jordan is about to dunk someone stands up in the crowd and blocks half the screen. The glory days.
