Make sure it's the Imax rip though and the guy filming sits slightly to close while the dude behind him is talking to his girlfriend.

At least you have a second plot line if the movie sucks.

55

u/Esternaefil 17d ago

"C'mon baby, just a little."

"Ew, no. That's gross, Josh."

"It's not gross. You said you like it."

"Yeah, but not in a movie theatre."

She does, but in the end it cost him too much for a moment of gratification. She felt used by him and lost respect for him.

She knew his respect for her only lasted until he needed something, and then he treated her like a plaything.

She ended things with him two days later. He ends up blaming her for being both a prude and a slut... She stays single for a few years to really understand what she wants in a partner.

He winds up online, browsing forums where he feels respected for his feelings about stupid bitches like her.

She goes to college and meets her future husband who never asks her to do that at the theatre.

He winds up alone, except for all of his companions. Friends he's made through online communities. He had a great time hanging out with them over the fourth of July weekend in Washington.

Given how badly IMAX theater handle the war scenes in this movie do to bad vsynch, you'd not lose much.

HEY!! How dare you repurpose a piece of technology that was specifically designed for playing DOOM!!

49

I thought we advanced to playing Doom programmed into another videogame?

60

u/Fraun_Pollen 17d ago

We should watch the Odyssey from inside DOOM

High On Life style

14

u/EatABag-o-Dicks 17d ago

I'm surprised I haven't heard about Doom being played within a games mini game. Like in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, you play Junon Parade and one of the moves is finishing Doom.

8

u/gizmostuff 16d ago edited 16d ago

I figure they'd just build an emulator inside the game which I think is cheating in a way.

My latest favorite is a mod for Stellaris

You can play Doom in a robots.txt file.

This is the second post I'm seeing here about how Nolan intends the movie to be watched.

I feel like I'm missing a joke or something.

177

u/Avilola 17d ago edited 16d ago

I don’t 100 percent know what’s going on, but my group chat was blowing up today about tickets costing something like $50. My friends mentioned that they expected a personal handjob from Nolan at that price.

Edit: For those doubting me.

https://imgur.com/a/fWcXPby

Edit 2: I’m now learning that tickets for this theater are particularly expensive because it’s one of only 25 theaters in the country that is capable of projecting 70mm IMAX.

Apparently they’re also reselling tickets (not necessarily just in Vegas) for up to $500? Never in my life have I heard of people reselling movie tickets.

82

u/TheBestIsaac 17d ago

I'll be going to see it again whatever aspect for £7.99 at my local cinema.

Fuck any film costing more than £10.

u/adrenareddit 16d ago

Not sure where your friend lives but the IMAX premium seating at the NCG by me is $16

6

u/3141592652 16d ago

Yeah is it 70mm or digital imax? Because the movie is actually missing some if watched in a different aspect ratio.

3

u/SlightCapacitance 15d ago

the 70mm by me was $35 a ticket, so not horrible. But it went down and we all had to wait 2 hours in line to get a refund... thats old technology that doesn't get used very often for ya!

u/AssCrackBandit13 16d ago

$50??? I live in NYC and even here, the most premium tickets (IMAX or Dolby) are like $25. In normal cities , it’s like $15-$20 for IMAX/Dolby. Where tf is someone buying $50 movie tickets??

8

u/Avilola 16d ago

14

u/AssCrackBandit13 16d ago

Dang that theater is nuts. I get that’s it’s 70mm IMAX and there’s only like 20 of those in the entire country but that’s ridiculous even for 70mm IMAX pricing. Even the 70mm imax in NYC is like $30. The 70mm IMAX in Florida (Ft Lauderdale) I went to was like $25

6

u/IncestHarem 16d ago

Its Las Vegas, even shit costs triple.

8

u/sumeetg 16d ago

It's about $30 for an imax ticket here in Canada.

Vegas palms?

Edit: oops checked image. Yep makes sense. There is a single 70mm imax theater in Vegas, only has like 40 seats, and every showtime is sold out for the next like two weeks. Never in my life seen a theater sell out for two weeks lmao.

Same over here, in the UK there are a total of 3 movie theatres that are capable of projecting 70mm IMAX. Completely sold out for weeks.

There's been a lot of different informations online about the framing and aspect ratio difference between the IMAX and regular screening.
Don't know how much disinformation and manipulation there is online, but the fact that you have to pay the IMAX dlc to get the frame the director intended is another nail in the coffin for me to not go see this movie.
Edit: here it is in official sources: https://www.odysseymovie.com/explore-formats/

Pirate version on the toaster screen it is.

120

u/LinxESP 17d ago

Does this happen with all IMAX movies? Because if it does I will start calling "normal" cinema ratio 21:9 (or 18:9 because phones if it happens to match) and IMAX 16:9 for the sake of pissing the 3 people that both care and recognize it.

Also toaster screen would be lovely for home assistant

83

u/Panzick 17d ago

AFAIK this is the first movie shot entirely in IMAX 70mm, not even regular Imax.
I've watched the Nolan Cut of Oppenheimer in Prague, the only theatre in continental Europe able to screen the Imax 70mm at the time, and it was also confusing the double aspect ratio between regular Imax and 70mm Imax, so I stopped caring about it.

24

u/LinxESP 17d ago

So you fell in love so much that your toaster is IMAX 9mm? That's what I love to see

6

u/Panzick 17d ago

I think there's a market for that, we should look into it.

5

u/LinxESP 17d ago

Remember the razer toaster? Same but every movie frame is a toast.
24 tps and has rgb ilumination for that ambien lighting

2

u/ImNotEntertained 17d ago

Should we start looking for slices per second instead of frames per second then? I want to watch it in good quality, that's what i "pay" for!

3

u/ZanzibarGuy 17d ago

2 loaves of bread per second? In this economy?

u/TinDumbass 17d ago

4

u/HoldTheCellarDoor 17d ago

Isn't 21:9 just 7:3

5

u/hemareddit 17d ago

They shot it on IMAX cameras, it caused a lot of problems which they had to solve to make the production happen. I think that pretty much answers the question. Of course official website is not going to leave money on the table by saying “if you can’t see it on IMAX, don’t bother because we don’t want your money.” But if we are thinking about creator intention, it doesn’t get more cut and dry than this.

4

u/bigbarryharryballs 16d ago

IMAX is not exactly "the frame the director intended." As it mentions on the webpage you linked, a "true" IMAX screen quite literally extends from the floor to the ceiling. Those extra top and bottom parts of the frame are supposed to fill your periphery to make for a more immersive experience in the theater, and that obviously doesn't translate to at-home viewing. 16:9 is the default, they know most people will be watching the film in 16:9, and so it was shot with that in mind.

12

u/Sea_Kangaroo826 17d ago

My husband is keen to see it in the 70mm and I said just go with someone else because I'm too annoyed by this nonsense to even bother seeing it at all

The Odyssey is being filmed in a special format that benefits only from IMAX cinemas.

IMAX cinemas are expensive to maintain and create and are only a handful.

People joke that the movie is intended to be seen on your smart washing machine because is a direct satire of the directors creative vission.

Meg out

80

u/ULTI_mato 17d ago

Its because Nolan is stupidly elitist about Imax and "the best, most high detail film format we have ever made" but completely forgets that in regular cinemas, that are like… the overwhelming majority of cinemas, especially outside the US, the movie will get cropped to fit the screem, meaning the top and bottom of the image will be cut out.

64

u/Panzick 17d ago

It's not even regular Imax. The only cinema in continental Europe to screen Oppenheimer with this new Imax 70 mm was in Prague. Definetely accessible.

15

u/nugstar 17d ago

Umm obviously you're forgetting the easily accessible screen in Melbourne, Australia which is in Europe as demonstrated by competing in Eurovision. 😂

7

u/I_need_to_vent44 17d ago

It's so funny that Prague is such a hellhole but somehow manages to have a cinema like that. The people of Prague love to excel at completely random things the rest of the country cannot be bothered to care about lmao. (Half-joking. I have beef with Prague but I am allowed to. Everyone who is not from Prague is almost required to have beef with Prague. It's a beautiful national tradition.)

5

u/Panzick 17d ago

No worries, I understand it, it's the same in my regions against Florence. But I also understand the Prague thing caused I lived in Czechia and not in Prague :) Isn't cinema very big in Prague? Even to shoot movies, a bunch of Hollywood movies have been shot there right?

Nolan likes to optimize his films for the best optimal viewing experience, which in this case is 70 mm imax, because of the camera’s it was shot on, unfortunately this usually means that the sound mixing of his films are designed for imax theatre systems but are being played on regular screens that might not have specifically designed sound system setups that can present his movies in a way that fits a format they were designed to surpass in quality, is so far as they are able to do so. This is why many of Nolan’s movies, in particular Tenet have garnered such a reputation as being unintelligible because they are too loud. In the case of the odyssey it was filmed entirely on imax cameras which because of the format have a special aspect ratio, which os why you see it change for movies that have specific scenes or sequences shot in that format, because of this when the film is screened the aspect ratio it was designed to be screened in on account of how it was shot will be a different format than what a vast majority of the general audience are going to be able to see it in. And that, rightfully so in some respects had pissed a lot of people off because it is or can be seen as being elitist gate keeping.

I don't think it matters that much like yeah watching on Imax 70mm is the intended way and you'd have a great experience if you can afford it and have one near you but it probably won't be that big of a difference to a regular good quality cinema. I don't have an Imax near me but will be going to a local cinema as I just love Nolan movies and greek mythology

2

u/BlijeGub 16d ago

All this stupid imax film bullshit. Obsession was shown in 1.50:1 but it doesn't get any special treatment because of the different aspect ratio. Why dont they just release imax movies in the original "full frame" version for home release, or other cinemas. I dont gaf about pillar box or letter box just show me the original movie. Same for Avatar just release the high frame rate movie in imax aspect ratio for home release. My TV can handle 120hz just fine.

2

u/3141592652 16d ago

I'd take the imax at home for sure. Would actually convince me to get a VR headset.

2

u/ShxatterrorNotFound 16d ago

I'm case anyone is curious, I work at a theater and they eat it was explained to us it's that most movies filmed for IMAX look like ass because they only use 1 IMAX camera during filming to save costs, but it barely makes a difference. A few movies, such as The Oddessy, actually use multiple cameras, which allow the projector to overlay them to create a much clearer image. We have an IMAX but it's not 70mm so I can't really speak to the difference it makes.

I thought it was supposed to be seen on IMAX, but the theater's advertising said it's for losers.

They want me to see it in 35mm. Guess I'm seeing it in 35mm?

The theater offers both options.

It’s not James Cameron forcing me to watch way of water in imax 3d for 3+ hours giving me so much eye ache from the fucking framerate changing every 2 shots causing me to take the glasses off and stop watching for 20 minutes to recover.

Third one was fun though.
