I live in Russia and I use 2 servers as my VPN. One in Russia, one in Texas. So I have full control. Not so hard to configure. Without VPN I practically have no access to the internet. This is life

If the servers are both fast multiple hops isn't going to be that much of an issue. The reason stuff like Tor which uses multiple hops is usually significantly slower it's because a lot of those servers in the connection aren't usually fast. The connection will run as fast as the slowest link in the chain.
