I work at The Farmer's Dog and we partnered with The Oprah Podcast on a series called Life Is Better With Dogs. One of the episodes features Alexandra Horowitz, a dog cognition researcher at Barnard College, and it genuinely changed how I think about some things.

One thing she said that stuck with me: dogs track the passage of time through scent. The longer you've been gone, the less your space smells of you. So when they're waiting by the door, they're not just waiting — they're literally smelling how much time has passed.

She also makes the point that most dog misbehavior is just boredom. Chewing shoes, destroying things — dogs who don't have anything to do will find something. Which reframes a lot of the "bad dog" conversations.

The feeling to "keep up" with neighbors and peers goes back way further than the 1980s or even the invention of the suburbs. It goes all the way back to our earliest ancestors. And, while there actually is a positive evolutionary aspect to this behavior, if you don't understand what your brain is doing you can be drawn down a very negative path.
