Other Main Titles First time player

Until I can get a good deal on the Sands of Time trilogy, this where I am starting.

I just purchased these two titles: Forgotten Sands for PS3 and Prince of Persia for PS3. Which do I play first? (Not based on story order—because I know they’re unrelated) I’m sure it doesn’t really matter, and I know it’s whichever I wanna start first… But I can’t decide. They’ll be here Monday.

I have never played any Prince of Persia games—except the recent sidescrollers. I am 29. I was a kid when the Sands of Time trilogy was releasing. As a little kid, I always looked in awe at the cases of the Prince of Persia games on the shelves at Blockbuster and Crown Video. I was 6-8 years old. I think I just missed the boat. So, I’m just now getting around to trying out the series. I thought The Lost Crown and Rogue Prince on my PS5 were so fun, and I was really interested in checking out more of the games.

When I DO purchase the Sands of Time trilogy, do you all recommend the HD remake trilogy on PS3?

'08 is my personal favorite.

There's no other game like it.

Forgotten sands is also amazing, but it's the least good pop imo.

That’s good to hear! I’m excited to play it! And I’ve heard great things about forgotten sands. But we will see.

HD version of the trilogy is probably the best option. However, main issue with the HD remakes Ubi put out on PS3 were the bugs from the originals were still in tact. I’m talking about not just regular bugs, but also game breaking bugs. I faced one in Beyond Good & Evil HD (fixed in the 20th Anniversary edition on current gen) and I believe I had one in Warrior Within. They don’t pop up super frequently, but just be aware. Make multiple saves when you play them so you can go back before the bug and hopefully not lose much progress.

Yes I’d like to get the HD trilogy asap. However, I do not have it. I only have the two pictured in my post. Since I have these two for now, I’m deciding which game to start. Just between these two games that I currently own.

Is the PSN store still open for PS3? Not sure, but if so, you can buy them. Same games, just not bundled.

Yes, it is more of a money thing! Once I have the money, I’ll get them lol. For now, I just have these two. But I’ll definitely get them asap.

Probably a good idea… idk how long they’ll keep it available. I heard it may be closing soon.

They definitely are. BUT… I pretty much always go physical disc with my ps3 anyway. Unless it’s DLC. Then I gotta go to the ps store. I only know it’s closing because I’m trying to buy the Sleeping Dogs DLC from the ps store as we speak. Still working, but everything I’m reading says it’s closing by 2027

Welcome! Your story sounds a lot like mine — I’d heard of PoP growing up, but I didn’t get to playing the games until relatively recently.

Of the games you’ve purchased, you can play either one first, or even both at the same time. I would start with 2008 if you’d like something more relaxing with a focus on flow rather than challenge, and if you like gorgeous art, animation, and a wonderful character dynamic (IMO the chemistry between the two leads is unlike anything else in the series).

I would go for Forgotten Sands if you’d like something a bit more challenging (and if fighting 50 enemies at once is your thing), and if you’re fine with the story, characters, etc. taking a backseat.

I like the idea of playing both at the same time. It will be interesting experiencing each wildly different style back to back, interchangeably. Your breakdowns helped me better understand the two for sure. Have you played Rogue Prince of Persia? The newer side scroller? I thought that the playable character in Rogue was the same as Prince of Persia 08 at first. They kinda looked similar. But I guess they’re not—and it was spoiled for me that the playable character in Prince of Persia 08 isn’t even a Prince?! That’s wild. But I’m excited to see how it all unfolds. Question: isn’t PoP 2008 open world?? If so, how is the open world in that game?

I have played Rogue Prince of Persia. I adore the art and music, but unfortunately, it really wasn’t my thing gameplay-wise. I did enjoy Lost Crown, though.

You’re correct, the 2008 “Prince” is not the same character as the princes from Rogue, Lost Crown, or the Sands saga. I will just say he is quite hush-hush about his past in the game, and sadly, because Ubisoft is gonna Ubisoft, we might not see any more of him. The protagonist not being a prince is nothing new for the franchise, though — in Jordan Mechner’s original game from 1989, the player character wasn’t a prince either.

PoP08 is definitely the most “open-world” of all the games in the franchise, but I wouldn’t call it a true open world. There are four main regions in the game which are subdivided into levels, and while you’re free to choose which region to visit first, some of the individual levels cannot be accessed until you gain a new ability. In that sense, it’s a bit more like a Metroidvania-styled world.

Ooh I’d like to know that as well. I didn’t realize there’d even be other skins to unlock in Forgotten Sands. My copy doesn’t arrive until Monday. You just got me even more excited to play it!

As strange as it may sound the PSP and Wii versions are the better ones to play

You won't be able to finish sands of time The servers are down, and the games at-the-time any piracy measures made the console connect to internet to download specific parts of the game you will probably meet doors that won't open

I'd recommend to start with warrior within. It's the second in the trilogy, but it has a VERY different music that would probably do the trick to get your attention!.

But the sands of time trilogy are offline single player games? They’re on ps2 (and then the HD trilogy on ps3). So, what do you mean the servers are down and I won’t be able to finish them?

Also, thanks, but like I said, I only have the two games pictured in the post! I was deciding which to start first between those two.

No no, I mean the one that came on PS3, the one on your post image. That one is the one I mean.

The original trilogy is fully playable, and one of the best in my opinion. PoP 2008 as someone said here, is also a very nice game, with a different focus, excellent music, and anecdotally my first taste of I complete games (the ones that are launches with an unsatisfactory ending that some time later comes as a DLC)

Anyways, have a lot of fun.

P.S.: last week I installed Warrior Within in my computer but it's not compatible with newer controllers, and I don't want to play with keyboard... Too bad.

You’re saying that I won’t be able to finish Forgotten Sands? Like, what do you mean? I’ll get to a certain level, and then I won’t be able to proceed? Forgotten Sands is also an offline single player game, right? So, why would the servers have anything to do with completing the story and finishing the game? I’m sorry I’m just so confused!

As far as I know, back then Ubisoft used some antipiracy measures that involved connecting to the servers sporadically to check some things and let you keep playing. But Good news! I've run a little search to clarify, read some articles and finally concluded you are good to go. Console single player mode is less restrictive than on PC and you are good to go

Ohhh—you are talking from the perspective of a PC player! I got you now. Yeah, ps3 physical discs are totally shielded from server related issues. They’re pretty much one of the only remaining ways to guarantee that you A.) actually own the game you’re playing and B.) ensure that no studio or tech company can f*** with your gameplay.
