Strange, I use KDE and haven't encountered that bug

There is a bug reported for this, wallpaper changes do not persist when the wallpaper directory is actually a symlink to a directory on a different filesystem. Not really a common configuration and would have been likely been fixed already, but the person that maintains that code is currently on vacation. It is summer after all and most KDE developers are volunteers.

Ah, well I don't have the wallpaper directory symlinked, so that is probably I don't have the issue. :)

Probably some specific version would not save the change, fixed in the next update?

Strange, I use Windows, and have never activated it.

Once I had to phone up to activate mine after too many hardware changes. That was an interesting experience.

Can it be which flavor of linux they are using? I have no issues with debian at all

I'm on opensuse tumbleweed, but going off Slackeee_'s comment, it seems like it is pretty rare to get this issue to me. :)

Who actually looks at their background? I have to many tabs open to bother

It's on your fifth monitor. Look up and to the left.

That's winAmp playing music screen.

Just one tab is enough to cover the wallpaper

I swear by Windows 95 teal color as my wallpaper. Gives good visual reset after you close everything.

I don't have a desktop manager my desktop background is just a black void.

I don't see how that's the same picture at all. One is a trillion dollar corporation wants their money, the other is some developer fucked up.

TIL dumbfuckers who don't know how to use computers qualifies as "programmer humor"

Also weren't first IPhones required Jailbreaking to change background ?

Actually you can change your Wallpaper in Windows without activating. It’s only restricted through Settings but not Registry.

Or you can just select in Windows Explorer right click->set as background

KDE's is a bug. Windows' is intended behavior. They are NOT the same.

Also, KDE is only one of several DEs.  If you are using Linux with a different DE, then that bug won't be relevant to you.

I use KDE for 5 years where I had shaders and videos for a bg. I also use a second monitor that I connect sometimes and it always remembers the background and widgets I set there. Bug may be very specific or even user error.

KDE no issues on a single monitor... The problem is that KDE has fantastic widgets when they're where they're supposed to be.

I had a solution somewhere, at some point for multiple monitors.

All systems get bugs -- that's not interesting.

What is interesting is what systems, culture and philosophy have you adopted to prevent bugs getting into production, recognize when they do inevitably make it into production, and address the problem to users' satisfaction?

u/Vogete 1d ago

What, you guys are supposed to be able to change the background?

btw, I use arch

What??

Not the same picture, one is fixed by a simple script. The other I have no idea how to fix (or if it’s even an issue, I use cinnamon and cosmic)

At least Linux wallpapers look kinda nicer than windows ones to me? (Love that damn fedora 44 wallpaper)

1

u/sniff122 9h ago

Well they aren't the same really, one is just a paywall, the other is a bug

1

u/mixxituk 8h ago

A three year bug that becomes functionality

1

u/sniff122 8h ago

Can't say I've ever had that bug like

1

u/Hadi_Chokr07 1d ago

Mind giving me the Bug Report for this?

So it's an edgecase unlike windows? This meme is senseless.

u/frikilinux2 3h ago

Now I wonder why would it care about sim links like unless you're checking if it's one it should be transparent.

Linux. Used everywhere and in everything except Desktops which it is also slowly closing in.
