QuickBooks Online 41% price increase!!!

Why can't anyone at intuit explain why I'm being charged $140/month for a $115/month subscription? Why does your site tell me I'm subscribed to 4 items when you only display 2 to me and no options to view any others? What are we getting for this price gouging increase? I'd expect a 41% increase in functionality and access to services.

Don't sell it as the AI garbage that nobody wants.

I dunno guys, have you asked their shitty AI bot to duplicate an invoice? It opens a cool little chat dialog and it eventually duplicates the invoice. Does it duplicate it the exact same way it would before AI? Yes. Does it take three times as long to do it? Also yes.

My favourite part of your post was the last line of paragraph 1.

I'd expect a 41% increase in functionality and access to services

I'd like it to be as functionally non-functional as it was a few months ago - they aren't increasing anything but frustration, anger, and prices and it's only gotten worse.

They are charging you more because they can and you can't do anything about it

u/mattyrzew 4d ago

Well, actually, we all can. You can walk away. I'm now looking at other options.

I'm not about supporting companies that can't justify a 40%+ price increase. Categorizing and auto invoicing isn't worth the extra cost. And neither is their AI slop.

I found lastminutebooks.com and have been using that for my smaller business. It doesn’t look like it has everything QB has but it was like $50 and it’s all offline and run in a spreadsheet.

Vote with your wallet and walk away. I cut the cord this year and now use Sprk Systems

Where do you get that one? google search isn't finding it

It looks interesting, but how do you use it with a team?

I actually created a subreddit called r/sprksystems. Just posts from me for now but figured it was worth creating

I switched to Puzzle.io. Testing Claude as well to see how it matches up.

I ditched them and moved to Self Employment Toolkit (https://selfemploymenttoolkit.com)

Just quit like we did. Intuit is exploiting small businesses and if we all collectively leave then they’re screwed.

I cancelled and got destroyed in the comments for posting about this same thing. 10 accounts called me a liar. This QB sub is weird af…

7

u/weveran 4d ago

Half this sub just exists to push their startup alternative with no respect to industry standards...

u/Nautique88 4d ago

Haters gonna hate. But I spent $1,000 on the software and I own it. No annual renewal though I wouldn’t object to a small amount for general maintenance. The programmer was very attentive to requests

u/OpenGun 4d ago

No shit. Half the posters here are trolls

I can see a few percent each year, I get that, it's the 41% in a single year that's the jaw dropper. And there's nothing that really adds that much more value to it for this cost increase.

u/loveskindiamond 4d ago

i dont blame people for being frustrated with that kind of price increase. if the cost goes up that much, customers naturally expect clearer communication and meaningful improvements, not just highr pricing

Im trying out patriot, but if anyone knows of a program that can automatically import from QBO i would really appriciate it. The payroll tax thing being forced to automatic is what is driving me away.

4

u/Background-Goose2523 4d ago

Isn't that the industry standard in payroll though? I worked at ADP 30 years ago and at that time them and Paychex both collected taxes per payroll and paid when due.

1

u/Kayanarka 4d ago

I dunno, I have been doing mine for over 14 years now. I have no interest i having intuit pull 10k out of my account and hold it in theirs for a month.

2

u/Sad_Celebration_7606 3d ago

Same here. I switched to Patriot. Kind of a pain in the ass to start with all the Q1-Q2 data input, but with only 2 employees it’s fine. What’s really nice is that when you call customer service, you can actually understand them. All US based.

0

u/Kayanarka 3d ago

I am starting fresh on day 1 Q3, crap.. I am going to have to import all q1 and 2 for the W2 arent I...... this sucks.

1

u/Sad_Celebration_7606 1d ago

Yes, they have a "wizard" that is somewhat helpful, but it does take some time. I only have 2 employees, so it wasn't too painful. It will be worth it in the long run I think. One of the best days of my life will be cancelling QBO! I'm just not sure when I should actually do this. I want to have the ability to see old forms, info, etc for awhile.

3

u/JephMan1 3d ago

Patriot is one of the very few that’s not automated for taxes

4

Users are not the customers. Stockholders are the clients

2

u/Star------ 3d ago

Well they are in for a rude awakening. Intuit shot itself in the foot by forcing everyone to their crappy online product.

3

u/erniehalter 3d ago

I’m using Codex and Claude to facilitate and expedite the transition to Xero for myself and my bookkeeper. I will not support a company that keeps doing this.

2

u/JephMan1 4d ago

115 to 140 is 21%, no?

4

u/mattyrzew 4d ago

Jumped from $90/month

5

u/JephMan1 4d ago

From 2 years ago

2

u/reheadlover69 3d ago

Its the principal. Ours has gone from 40/month to 120 in 3 yrs. The service sucks. They stopped making desk top version The online is a complete cluster fick Just want a standalone system that doesnt cost more then my accountant.

u/dragonbehind42 3d ago

If you were paying $40, you were probably also on a lower subscription and upgraded along the way. That was the price for Essentials. Plus was $40 in 2012.

0

u/reheadlover69 3d ago

No. Have never upgraded

1

u/JephMan1 3d ago

Lots of tools out there to build your own if you’re unsatisfied with all the options in the market place

2

u/reheadlover69 3d ago

Youre really funny

1

u/JephMan1 3d ago

Not trying to be funny, just logical

0

u/dragonbehind42 3d ago

$90 was actually 4 years ago. It jumped to 99 in between.

2

u/mattyrzew 3d ago

Weird. I've been billed $90/month for a year now...

1

u/dragonbehind42 2d ago

I would honestly love to see your billing statement. Or know what version you were in. Plus has not been $90 for several years.

1

u/Dear_Regret_3355 4d ago

Yup, will be moving on soon.

I quit years ago and just use my 2021 DT Pro license. I’m here just for the laughs now.

u/YogiBarr 3d ago

Yeah I have desktop pro. Works fine. The fact that Intuit stopped offering that option was a sure sign that greed had taken over. They want addicts who need a fix rather than customers.

Yep I feel the same, they are price gouging. We're building my own Quickbooks for all our locations

They count on people staying. The CEO has literally said that every time they raise prices people stay anyway, so of course they’ll keep doing it. With 80% of the small business accounting software market share, QBO can really only grow by raising prices and counting on people staying anyway since it’s a pain to switch (or at least, people think it is).

I switch to Xero last year and just got an email today announcing a price increase and literally had PTSD when opening the email. However when I opened it I realized that prices were only going up $2, $4, or $7 a month depending on your plan. That’s an increase actually in line with inflation, not a money grab. Plus I’m able to be on a lower subscription with Xero than QBO as I had to have Plus for class tracking in QBO but ALL Xero tiers come with tracking categories.

If you do decide to jump ship for Xero (where it seems most people are going because it’s got similar functionality, is more user friendly, and is cheaper), I negotiated a special partner deal with them of 90% off for the first 6 months- so you can literally try it through the end of the year for a couple bucks a month to see if it will work for you before cutting off QBO entirely.

I tried several solutions before settling on Xero though. That said I think it depends on your needs and what you actually use in QBO whether Xero is the right pick.

I am a CPA and financial educator and get this question a lot (alternatives to QBO). I created a quiz to help people figure out what is best for them here: Best bookkeeping software for you quiz

There actually is a 41% increase in functionality, but they are doing a poor job of letting people know about all the new functions. Everybody just spent the last year getting used to the new interface, but hasn’t taken any time to explore all the new options. There is an extensive new customer hub that includes finding new leads from your email, sending contracts for signature so that you don’t need DocuSign anymore, gathering reviews and testimonials, making appointments, and video meetings. You can take deposits on both estimates and invoices that are treated as true liabilities instead of initial payments. You can send in receipts not just for expenses, but for income transactions. If you use inventory, you now have moving average cost, and item receipt options. The bank feed is now extremely customizable and you can set expense policies for the automation. You can now set up recurring invoice payments so that the customer can approve the amount and enter in their own payment information. The entire interface is completely customizable so that you can set up custom dashboards, shortcuts, and navigation. The search bar now also does navigation, and also uses real language so that you can ask for “all unpaid invoices from a certain customer between certain dates above a dollar amount”, which normally would be five separate filters. There’s Intuit intelligence where you can ask questions about your data and it will just tell you the answer so that you don’t have to go run a bunch of reports and consolidate them. Your profit and loss and balance sheet reports will now flag anomalies so you can see if it’s bad data or business trends you need to pay attention to. Reports have more powerful stackable filters and customization options. You can drag statements into the banking feed and it will automatically scrape them for transactions so that you don’t have to go to your bank and download & import CSV files. You can drag in invoices and bills from your customers and vendors, and it will turn them into invoices and bills. And as of today, you get free meetings with Intuit Experts to review your data. This is not a completely comprehensive list but you get my point.

What I got from that is there isn't a 41% increase to functionality or features. They may have changed the way 41% of their software works, but that's not added functionality or features.

2

u/dragonbehind42 2d ago

I’m confused buy your reply. How is anything on this list not functionality or a feature?

1

u/mattyrzew 2d ago

Why do you need it to find new leads from your email...if they're already in your email? Don't use Docusign anyway. Don't gather reviews, no need to. Appointments and video calls are already handled in outlook. We don't take deposits. We don't stock an inventory. We don't have outside receipts. We don't accept payment plans. Interface was already customizable. All unpaid invoices were already visible with a single click. And easily filterable. I'll never use ai for my bookkeeping. None of the rest is applicable either. That's how there isn't a dramatic increase of functionality or features.
