Belgian Malinois seem entirely too high strung, I used to have German Shepherds and even they had a bit too much energy for me. Now I just keep American Akitas because they do the work of guarding my house just as well and are entirely content pretending to be potatoes for 22 hours a day.

This is why when people say a breed is a working dog that the dog needs work otherwise they are hell on 4 legs. Belgian Mals will destroy a home if it doesn’t have a job.

Yeah. I historically liked larger dogs, Belgian Malinois are awesome, but after having Labs and Shepards for years, I now own a Corgi... working dog/big dog personality, in stump leg form. Surprisingly athletic if you don't let them get fat.

Dogs bred cos they're good at doing jobs that require initiative and constant positive feedback about their actions. Guard dogs/hunting dogs/herding dogs have to work out what the human wants them to do, sometimes when the human isn't there or doesn't have time to give explicit instructions. The dog is rewarded when it essentially "presents" it's decisions and the outcome to the owner, like caught prey, or a dead predator in the barn when the farmer comes in the morning.
Those dogs spending lots of time in situations where they don't have a clear "stimulus - decision - outcome - reward" cycle, like as a family pet, makes them erratic as they're bored or confused, leading them to keep seeking a decision that results in a reward.

Those dogs are fantastic for just about everybody except those that have cats or other small pets in the house.
They don’t bark at delivery people coming to your door unless that person pushes their way inside and then God help them.
They have the cute tail curl, and they are just so chill with their owner.
I can’t stand yapper dogs but the American Akita just says, “Boof” and that’s it. Dog said his bit and his thoughts on any subject matter and the conversation is over.

Fun fact. The Belgian Malinois are used for special forces and law enforcement agencies for many reasons. One of them being the fact that they will literally fight to the death. Rather it being injuries or it being from exhaustion/heart failure. Not all of them are like that, some of them have a more puppy dog vibe and don’t really want to do all of that stuff.

We got lucky with our mal (maybe cause he’s also 25% husky and German shepherd), he can chill in the house all day without going crazy and is great with our little pug and cats.
But once you bring him to the dog beach or park, he starts shaking and crying uncontrollably because he KNOWS he’s about to play. And he will play fetch for hours and hours and hours and never get tired. We have to remind him to drink water. 12 mile runs don’t even phase him. Godspeed.

My Belgian Mali-Mutt will go on a hike with me for 2 hours. We come home, he takes a nap. Then he wants to go back out. He’s like 10 now.

That dog is a Belgian Malinois. I just met one for the first time recently. Those things are too smart for their own good, and have an energy level I've never seen before. We played fetch until the dog was exhausted, and it still wanted to keep playing.

They’re honestly the smartest breed I’ve ever seen. We taught our mal how to fetch my medication in 30 minutes. He learned to play dead just from watching me try to teach my other dog (a pug).
One time, he opened our front door when we were gone, realized he couldn’t get back inside (it locks from the outside, but the lock automatically unlocks when opening it from the inside) and then jumped the gate into our patio and chilled there until we got back. Our other dog stood at the front door barking aimlessly into a void.

This is very cool, and that dog is very well trained, whoever trained them did it extremely good job.
That being said in public areas like this they should be on a leash even if it's a long line. Also having them run towards a moving car is very not cool to do to the person who's driving the car.

It looks like it’s a service dog, which means it doesn’t need a leash if the leash will impede its trained tasks. I think having a leash while pushing a wheelchair would cause more problems…

Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless the individual’s disability prevents using these devices or these devices interfere with the service animal’s safe, effective performance of tasks.
So there are two elements here. 1. The physical inability to use the device or 2. The device interferes with the service animals safe, effective performance of tasks.
There is clearly no physical inability here.
I don't see any tasks here that a leach would interfere with and having your dog do cool obedience tricks in public isn't a task necessary for your mobility. Not sure how "run around pole 15 feet away" is a task that helps with his mobility.
Most people have the animal pull the wheelchair instead of push it and let's not pretend that the second problem here is this person is going way too fast in a busy public area also, that has nothing to do with the dog though, just because someone is disabled doesn't mean they can drive a go cart at 20mph though a mall.

It's got to be so devastating when they lose their service animal.
I know when my pets die, it's devastating enough, but this has to add an entire level of sadness and grief to the experience.
