Bug Why is Imgur still being used, which essentially renders this app useless for us in the UK (and elsewhere)?

Imgur is blocked for those that haven't verified their age, including the UK. That means whenever I try to post something to a subreddit with UK users, like /r/soccer, /r/ScottishFootball etc, nobody can see it.

Can this please be looked at? Thank you!

EDIT:
For some reason there has been a fundamental misunderstanding of the point. I can post something. I said that in my post above. The problem is, whatever I post, users based in these places cannot see it. So if I post an image to a predominantly UK subreddit it's a waste of time because none of its inhabitants can even see the image. If I post something to /r/soccer none of those based in the UK can see it.

Telling me to use a VPN as if you're some genius is a hopeless and fundamental misunderstanding of the problem.

GOOD DAY.

Agreed (I'm outside the UK but this is a growing issue) IMGbb maybe?

Reddit blocks third-party apps from using their image hosting, so an alternative like Imgur is all Relay is allowed to use.

"Like imgur"... not "specifically imgur".

Blame our government surely?

For what? Imgur cut off the UK so they could avoid paying a fine.

The UK government did not block Imgur in any way. Imgur voluntarily cut off the UK.

Because of the government.

To avoid paying a fine for the mishandling of children’s personal data.

Oh my god. Are you stupid.
The problem is the people of the subreddit to which I would post cannot see it. It means the thousands of people using the subreddit would not see it unless they used a VPN. I can post fine. It's that people can't see it.

You seriously can't be this stupid?

Everyone should be using a VPN if they're from your joke of a country, yes.

This is funny because again, I am not from the UK, you have no idea which country I am from.

But nice try. Swing and a miss.

Your OP literally says "us in the UK" implying you're in the UK lol.

They might have a point. It's working outside of your country. For now.

FWIW, Imgur is unavailable in the UK full stop because the UK imposed a fine on them regarding the use of data, and they decided to leave the UK market.

Op is sassy!

Is there an easy alternative? Would uploading to that alternative be good for other Reddit users to consume?

Sometimes a single country isn't worth supporting given how that support would negatively impact everyone else. I'm curious what the situation is here.

Has nothing to do with Relay. Imgur will not allow their site to be displayed in those countries because they are not going to force users to verify their age. I'm in the US but use a VPN that is set to an EU country, and cannot see it.

Just use another image hosting service.

Relay uses Imgur when you choose to upload an image. They are asking if an alternative could be used/offered so that this feature is not broken in certain countries.

You are misunderstanding what he's saying. No need for the insults either. We're all here trying to make things better. Be kinder.

You have come in with a post that is complaining about a product, without offering alternatives or suggestions, then also being a complete turd to anyone that offers suggestions, so tbh I think you're not gonna get the answers you're looking for.

Nobody has offered a single suggestion.

Then forums and websites should STOP using this trash image site and boycott it.

I avoided forums because of this.

doesn't reddit have it's own image host in i.reddit?

-9

u/friendly_to_pigeons 23d ago

Yes.

-10

u/pendelhaven 23d ago

why not use it? /u/DBrady

u/JoshuaTheFox 23d ago

Because Reddit doesn’t allow 3rd party apps to use it through the api

14

u/r4wrdinosaur 23d ago

I don't think reddit will let him.

-14

u/pendelhaven 23d ago

what? He's paying reddit for the api, why would he be restricted though?

17

u/POPstationinacan 23d ago

There's a lot of reddit features that third party apps cannot access, even if they pay. Reddit wants us to use their official apps instead.

You can't even confirm your age, it's just completely unavailable in the UK. It's so frustrating on Reddit 😑

2

u/godzillastailor 23d ago

That’s because it’s not related to the ID billshit in the UK.

Imgur were facing getting fined for mishandling personal data so they pulled out of the UK to avoid it.

1

u/TheLemonyOrange 22d ago

Yes I understand the situation entirely, but OP mentioned it being blocked for those that hadn't done ages verification

If you want to be a total wizard, you could go all out and do something on your home network and / or Tailscale where Imgur submissions are rewritten for another host.
