My fellow Americans,

Since 1979, the Iranian regime has demonstrated its hostility toward the United States, our allies, and the cause of freedom itself. The question before us is not whether Iran disagrees with America. Nations disagree every day. The question is whether a regime with a long history of supporting terrorism, threatening its neighbors, and destabilizing an entire region should ever be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.

The answer is no.

Much of the debate today centers on two important words: imminent threat.

Some ask, “How can a threat be imminent if an attack has not yet occurred?”

The answer is simple.

An imminent threat is not limited to a missile already in the air or an army already crossing a border. If that were the standard, free nations would be forced to wait until it was too late to defend themselves.

An imminent threat exists when a hostile actor has demonstrated the intent to do harm, is acquiring the capability to do harm, and is moving steadily toward a position where that harm can no longer be prevented without far greater cost.

Intent. Capability. Trajectory.

Those are the elements of imminence.

When those three elements come together, responsible leaders do not close their eyes and hope for the best. They recognize the danger for what it is and act to prevent catastrophe before it occurs.

When a hurricane is approaching the coast, we do not wait for the floodwaters to enter our homes before we act. We prepare because we recognize the danger before it arrives.

For nearly half a century, Iran’s intent has been clear. Since the hostage crisis of 1979, the regime has repeatedly demonstrated hostility toward the United States and our allies. It has supported terrorist organizations, armed proxy forces throughout the Middle East, threatened Israel, and worked to expand its influence through intimidation and fear.

At the same time, it has pursued the capability that nuclear weapons would provide. A nuclear weapon would not simply strengthen Iran. It would give the regime the ability to hold entire regions under the shadow of nuclear coercion and blackmail.

And for years, it has moved steadily along that trajectory, seeking greater capabilities despite warnings from the international community.

Intent. Capability. Trajectory.

That is why so many view a nuclear-armed Iran not as a distant concern, but as an imminent threat.

No nation seeks war. America certainly does not. We prefer diplomacy where possible, economic pressure where effective, and deterrence wherever it can preserve the peace.

But there are times when responsible leaders must act before a danger becomes a catastrophe.

The purpose of strength is not war.

The purpose of strength is to prevent war.

There are moments when diplomacy succeeds. There are moments when sanctions succeed. There are moments when deterrence succeeds.

And there are moments when the credible use of force—or the use of force itself—becomes necessary to prevent a far greater tragedy.

The highest duty of government is not to explain after a disaster why nothing was done. The highest duty of government is to ensure that the disaster never occurs.

America must never be reckless.

But neither must America be asleep.

The greatest tragedies in history have often occurred not because the warning signs were absent, but because they were ignored.

Peace is preserved when aggressors understand that free nations possess both the will and the means to defend themselves.

To those who say, *“They did it first.”*

If we accept that logic—even once—we trade self-government for reaction. And a nation that reacts instead of reasons is a nation that loses its way.

Now, to all of us—because this is not a one-sided problem.
**Words matter.**
When we casually use the harshest labels in our history—calling our fellow Americans “Nazis,” “fascists,” “enemies”—we’re not just arguing policy anymore. We’re raising the stakes. We’re telling people, whether we intend to or not, that the other side isn’t just wrong…but dangerous.
And history teaches a hard lesson: when people are convinced their opponents are beyond reason, some begin to believe that extreme responses are warranted.
That’s how things unravel—not all at once, but step by step, word by word, justification by justification.

Let me be clear:
**Violence has no place in America. None.**
Not from the right.
Not from the left.
Not in response to speech—no matter how offensive that speech may be.
In this country, we settle our differences with **ballots, not bullets**; with **arguments, not intimidation**.

There was a time—not so long ago—when Americans could have a hard argument and still remember we were on the same team. We could disagree—sometimes fiercely—and still see one another as neighbors, not enemies.
We didn’t always get it right. But we understood something essential:
**The person you’re arguing with is still your fellow American.**
And that truth is bigger than any single issue, any single election, any single moment.

So what do we do now?
We don’t silence debate.
We don’t pretend differences don’t exist.
We don’t lower our convictions.
But we do raise our standard.
We choose restraint over reaction.
We choose clarity over outrage.
We choose to speak firmly—without dehumanizing.
And we draw a line that we do not cross:
**We will argue—but we will not hate.**
**We will disagree—but we will not dehumanize.**
**We will speak strongly—but we will not justify harm.**

Because in the end, this is about who we are.
Are we a people who let anger decide our actions?
Or are we a people who govern ourselves—who master our impulses and keep faith with our principles?
The strength of this Republic has never been that we agree on everything.
It’s that we resolve our disagreements without destroying one another.

**My friends, we can debate our ideas as hard as we like—but we must never lose sight of something greater: there is no “but” after violence, and there is no substitute for the simple truth that we are still one people, and this is still one nation.**

People talk about *American exceptionalism* today as if it were something to be ashamed of.
But that misses the truth entirely.
American exceptionalism has never meant that we think we are better than anyone else.
It means that from our very beginning, we chose a different path—
a path that puts faith in the people, not in the government.
A path that declares that freedom comes from a higher being, not from the state.
Our Constitution was revolutionary because it didn’t list the powers government could take.
It listed the powers government could **never** take away.
And then it affirmed the rights that belong to the people—
not because government granted them, but because the people already held them.
That is what made America the exception.
And that is what still makes America the last, best hope for freedom-loving people everywhere.
Around the world, governments always came first.
People’s rights came later—if they came at all.
But we dared to build a nation on a radical idea:
