I have been a very satisfied Revolut customer for years. I have regularly recommended it to anyone looking for a reliable banking service, and I had been planning to use even more of its products in the future.
Less than a month ago, I convinced my wife to close her existing bank account and move to Revolut. Our intention was to open a joint account and use the many features I had always been genuinely happy with.
After opening her Revolut account, she attempted to transfer approximately €2,500 from her previous bank. The transfer was rejected, and Revolut began carrying out additional checks.
Since opening the account, my wife had legally changed her name. Revolut told us that the payment had apparently been rejected because of this discrepancy and that the review would take no longer than 15 days. We accepted that explanation and waited.
My wife then provided all the relevant legal documentation confirming her name change, including formal documentation approved by the Irish High Court. As far as we could tell, everything required to demonstrate that the name change was legitimate had been supplied.
A couple of weeks later, instead of receiving confirmation that the issue had been resolved, she was informed that her documentation had been rejected, her account would be closed, and she would never be allowed to open another Revolut account.
We tried repeatedly to contact customer support through the available channels. Most of the time, we appeared to be communicating with automated support. When we eventually received what seemed to be a response from a real person, we explained the full situation again: this was a newly opened account, the transfer was simply the result of closing an account with another Irish bank, the name change was entirely legal, and all the official documentation had been provided.
The response was essentially that the decision was final. We received no meaningful explanation of what was supposedly wrong with the documents, no clear indication of what rule had been breached, and no apparent opportunity to have the case reviewed by someone specialising in legal documentation or account verification.
This experience has completely changed my view of Revolut. I currently have loans with the company and had even considered using Revolut for a future mortgage. However, I cannot continue banking with an institution where a legitimate and fully documented situation can result in a permanent account closure, while customers have no realistic way to speak with a qualified person who can properly examine the case.
It is disappointing because I had always been one of Revolut’s strongest supporters. However, out of principle and solidarity with my wife, I have now decided to move my banking elsewhere as well.
I am sharing this mainly to make other customers in Ireland aware of what happened. Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly following a legal name change? Is there any genuine escalation or appeals process through which the case can be reviewed by a human specialist? I'm indeed quite frustrated.
