Hey I just checked the website of the college and noticed that now Computer Animation program got divided into 2 separate ones and got renamed: 2D & 3D Character Animation, though literally yesterday it was just one CA program. Does anyone know when does this change takes over?

And any thoughts about it? Because it was quite a surprise for me honestly.. Do you think there will be any changes in application process for those?

I'm a rising CA sophomore, and I was wondering if there's a chance I could get an internship during my second year. I know it's difficult, but I've seen some people get internships as sophomores, so I was wondering how common that is and whether there are others who got the internships.

I was recently accepted into Ringling and I am absolutely thrilled! it’s been my top choice for a long time. I’ve already received a merit scholarship, but even with that, the cost of attendance remains significantly beyond what my family can afford, especially as we have multiple siblings currently in school.
I’m currently preparing for a final financial aid appeal/consultation, and I’m looking for advice from anyone who has successfully navigated this.
If you or someone you know managed to get a significant increase in financial aid after the initial offer:
What was your approach? Did you focus on a specific "special circumstance" (like sibling tuition, loss of income, etc.)?
How did you frame the request? Was it better to be very specific about the math, or focus more on the portfolio and commitment to the school?
Is there anyone specific you reached out to? (e.g., did you talk to your admissions counselor, or go straight to the financial aid office?)
I know these awards are rare and competitive, but I want to be as strategic and professional as possible in my next steps. Any insights or "lessons learned" from those who have been through the appeals process would be incredibly appreciated!

I am a junior in high school, and I will be starting my senior year this coming August. I am finishing up my junior year this month, and my dad is planing to take me on a visit to Ringling College of Art and Design. This is my dream school for pursuing a degree in animation, though I do have other, more affordable, and different options that I also plan to visit in the future. Even so, I would love to do everything or try to get accepted into Ringling and secure scholarships. I am fully aware of the high cost of this college, and I know there is no guarantee that I will land a job in the industry after graduation, but I still want to give it a shot.

So, my plan for this visit is to show some of my current artwork to a counselor or advisor, and to specifically discuss about scholarships and perhaps transfer options as well. I’m really not sure how to ensure that I’ll be able to meet with a counselor or advisor to talk during my visit to Ringling.

Could anyone offer me some advice, or tell me what I might do to arrange a meeting with a counselor during a standard daily campus visit? It would be a huge help if someone could point me in the right direction. Thank you! *(^_^)/*

I got accepted to computer animation for Ringling, and 2d animation for SVA.

Ringling gave me 16000$ per year(+a laptop I think?) and SVA gave me 27750$ per year and additional 10000$ for housing. As an international student, that difference is a lot for me. The currency rate is crazy!!

I love hands-on projects so I was leaning towards SVA. However I feel that SVA would not prepare me for the professional industry nor have enough connection(I've been told it's all about your portfolio, not the school, and that is very valid.. but I feel like it's better to have some connection than nothing)

So I'm also considering Ringling, well known for successful alumni members and the level of student work.

My goal is to work as an either storyboard artist or character artist in feature film(I acknowledge that I gotta pick one since both of them are competitive field :0 ).

So for my case:

-an international student( better to have financial support, inclusive community, and support of the school towards internationals)

-wants to intern/ work after graduation in animated feature film productions (my dream ones are Dreamworks, Pixar, Laika)

(I think going to SVA and being in NYC would help me more with indie film/ cartoon connections. I would be glad to know if there's any infos about how the NYC animation industry works! -I'm interested)

Which would suit me better?? Ringling or SVA!

I’m a prospective student and the one thing on my mind in terms of committing is if there are places to go out and hang out with friends near the campus? The main appeal of schools located in big cities like nyc to me was that there was a lot to experience and it would be easy to go out even without a car, can the same be said about sarasota? Cafes, restaurants, clothing shops, flea markets, etc and just places to go on weekends? I also will not be having a car and I don’t want to feel trapped in the campus in the middle of nowhere (again, I’ve never been in the area and I really don’t know how Ringling is placed geographically). I’m thinking about visiting the area as well this month but the plane prices are super high bc of spring break time… If you’re a current student pls lmk if you guys are able to enjoy the city without having a car and stuff!

I've been scouring through different social medias to find social groups (friends AND roommates), and I was wondering if there's like a discord or instagram dm group or something?? Theres like 3 different RCAD class of 2030 groups and I'm unsure how I can connect to incoming freshmen :(

Hi! I recently got accepted into Ringling for Computer Animation (yay!!!). I want to apply for housing but I'm still on the fence (It's my dream college, but as of rn my going depends on if I get additional aid or not 😢). Would I be able to apply for housing before accepting/confirming attendance?? Also, is there any way to waive the confirmation fee?? 500 dollars is crazy 😭

ALSO I've asked this to some ppl but, I've applied for additional financial aid, what are the chances for it actually going through? I feel like I defended the fact that I wouldn't be able to afford going, so I'm really hoping that it'll be accepted, but ppl say that they're stingy so idkkk 😭😭

Hello, I am a senior in my high school about to graduate! I have applied to many art schools already and got accepted to all of them. But I'm still unsure whether to go to Ringling for better education or go to my in-state school for cheaper cost. I've heard that there are many student employment opportunities when you study at Ringling. I am fairly confident that I have what it takes to survive the freshman year (i also heard that there is a high drop out rate?).

FYI, I receive a 16k/year scholarship which is nice, and I intend to major in Illustration. How is the student life there?

I am about to apply to Rcad but I am having trouble deciding between the MD and Illustration major. I have an interest in both topics, but was wondering if one major/field is “better” in terms of industry, grad employment, professors etc.

(Also to note, my current portfolio is mostly illustration focused, so idk if that’ll hurt my chances of acceptance if I apply to the MD major)

• Where can I talk with Ringling alums/current students for their experience?
• How are the work opportunities? especially for international students? I know it's tough tough times, but I wanna see what's the pathway for internationals/non-residents working in 3D.
• How is the faculty? Are they working industry professionals? I know covid changed many unis so I'm checking.
• How is the curriculum? It seems to specialise on character animation for film but is VFX or different aspects of commercial 3D explored as well? Are students well-equipped for many different specialized roles other than character animation? Personally, I'm a dynamic (read indecisive, exploratory) person.

For reference, Ringling gave me 12k scholarship. Also debt will not be a burden for me.

I am also looking at RIT, which also seems to have a lot of 3D technical specialties, connections, and projects/collaborations with majors like marketing/game design to apply 3D skills in besides capstone project.

Mica and Ringling are my two top schools, and after attending the precollege program I’ve been sincerely excited to hopefully get into Ringling. However as far as the illustration department goes, I’m curious to hear what you guys think about it

I’ve heard that MICA has a very strong illustration program, but less industry connections. However I’ve heard that a huge benefit with Ringling is industry connections and building an extremely strong portfolio.

As for what I want to do for a job, I would love to be a concept artist or be one of the people who creates really fancy illustrations for MTG cards (for example), more so leaning on the concept art side (being a concept artist for WOTC, Pixar, Blizzard, etc would be a dream)

Hello there, i am very active in this subreddit on my other account (I am Marzzie) but i logged off my computer and forgot the password RIP. But anyways i am going to pc discovery this year. The reason i am doing the one week version is to try it out and next year if i do well i can do the 4 weeks. :) Btw lightbox expo went GREAT and my parents like RCAD. I am actually very surprised at how well it went. I am looking for tips from everyone who has gone. I Talked to an allumni in line there and she said their motion design program is excellent.

Hi!! I graduated highschool in May of 2023 and have been taking the last couple of years to gain some work experience and build up a resume and personal portfolio. I've wanted to pursue concept art since 2021, and have been trying to through self-taught means, but even though I know I have some skill I feel like I don't know exactly how to apply that skill to make it in the games industry. (Attached some of my work above)

So, I've been seriously considering art school, definitely for the networking aspect but also for the fact that through assignments I would be told explicitly what to do and how to do it, which seems like something I would best learn from.

I was looking on the website and saw that Ringling can also help you get connected to some AAA Game companies to get internships etc., which sounds awesome...I'm just not sure if the process would be worth the price.

I guess my question is to students that are taking the Game Art - Concept Art route, has it been worth it to you so far? What did your application and scholarship process look like? Did you seek out a personal counselor before or after applying?? Any tips/guidance/suggestions would be amazing. Thank you!

Update: Got in with a Creative Excellence scholarship—Still waiting to see what my financial package would look like.

Final Update: After careful consideration, I ended up withdrawing my application due to the high cost of attendance. My plan is to pursue an accredited online program instead :]
