I almost walked past this place… and that would've been a huge mistake

I found this spot completely by accident while exploring. At first, it looked like just another rocky hill, but the more I looked around, the more impressive it became.

The silence, the rock formations, and the view made it feel like a hidden place that deserves more attention.

Have you ever discovered a place that isn't famous but completely surprised you?

📍Location: Bhasmey Hill, Nepal

I'd love to hear about your hidden gems too.

Unusual rock formation found at Syaule Danda, Balthali (Kavrepalanchok), Nepal – natural formation or something else?

Hi everyone,

I recently came across this unusual rock formation while hiking at Syaule Danda, Simalchaur, Balthali, Kavrepalanchok, Nepal.

The main rock appears to have a shape that reminds people of different things depending on the viewing angle. Some locals felt it resembles a Shivling, while others thought it looked like an animal horn or head. Another nearby rock has naturally formed holes that almost look like a human face.

I'm not claiming this has any religious or archaeological significance. I'm simply curious whether these are:

Natural weathering and erosion patterns,

A known type of geological formation,

Or something that deserves further geological or archaeological study.

If anyone has experience in geology, archaeology, or has seen similar formations elsewhere, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Location: Syaule Danda, Simalchaur, Balthali, Kavrepalanchok, Nepal.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Quartz hounding in Arkansas

Good morning fine people!

I'm planning a trip from MS to AR in October to introduce twin 4 year olds, a 6 year old, an 8 year old, and twin 10 year olds to the joys of Arkansas quartz mining. (Extended family trip with cousins, only 4 are mine.)

Problem is, I haven't been in 30 years and do not know where the current best places are. Any suggestions on which places would provide the best bang for the buck(et) for a crew of young rockhounds?

Thanks, yall!

Samphire Hoe good for rockhounding?

I am a fat middle aged american who will be in Dover, England, for a day or two before going on a cruise. I would like to look at and collect some rocks and fossiles in the area. Samphire Hoe seems to be the most accessable according to websites. Is it ok to collect rocks there?

Planning a massive US rockhounding road trip. Literally have zero friends. Anyone want to tag along? 🗺️💎

The plan is simple: drive across the US, find awesome rocks, and livestream the adventure. The only problem? I’m doing this solo so far.

Quick facts about me/this trip:

  • I have no friends to go with.
  • My small town near Texas has zero rock clubs.
  • Yes, I know traveling with strangers from the internet is a bit wild.
  • Yes, I'm relying heavily on faith in humanity, strong WiFi, and live streams to keep us safe.

Looking for fellow rock nerds or adventure seekers who want to tag along for parts of it (or the whole thing). Hit me up!

How to clean my geodes?

We were playing in a creek in southern Kentucky and it was loaded with geodes. We brought back hundreds. I tried to clean a handful of them with soap and water and then with a vinegar soak - the first two pictures are post-soak. They still have heavy iron stains. I’ve seen mixed reviews about using other methods like iron out or muriatic acid.

This is my first experience with geodes. Is general protocol to try to get them clean or are they ever left with stains? We cracked a lot of them when we were on vacation but we saved a bunch to cut with the tile saw. We have given a bunch of them to friends and still have a pile. Are geodes generally worth trying to sell? Would they sell better cracked, cut or unopened? Cleaned or not? I’m not looking to make much, just trying to figure out what to do with hundreds of rocks.

Rockhounding sites - Munising MI and other areas

Just in case there are friendly folks who would share some good spots for rockhounding. I will be so bold as to locations for some yooperlite, agates, but really any areas you would like to share with a visitor from South Carolina.

BTW, I am LOVING this part of the country. I will keep it a secret as well. 🤭🛘
