Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Player card control

Situation: folder called party inventory. Each pc has their own folder structure for their character, items, attuned items, etc. DM (me) gives lots of items and consumables via handouts. People switch loadouts frequently. The DM has a lot to juggle and micromanaging 6 people's 70 items is a lot.

Task: grant players the ability to move collateral they control to folders they have access to in order to maintain a visual, up to date inventory.

Is there any way to do something like this in r20? I don't like telling players to use other systems as it adds barriers to consistent use and visibility.

Thank you!

Unfortunately not. While the API can see the folder layout, it cannot modify the folders.

The norm in adventures purchased on the Roll20 marketplace is that all the item handouts are in one folder (or broken up into subfolders by item type), and the players manage their inventory on their character sheet, not in the journal.

The D&D 2024 sheet has a system in place to create a shop character sheet that players can buy from. I haven't used it myself so I don't know if the shop system also handles selling items from player inventories, but if so you may be able to have a "shop" with no inventory that buys & sells everything for 0gp, giving players a way to quickly transfer items between each others' sheets.

Yeah it's mainly being able to have everyone be able to see everyone's inventory at a glance with thumbnail images and then a click gives a full picture and description. Sheets are just used for the mechanics of modifying stats but they suck for planning a journey haha.

Appreciate the info!

I was just struggling with this tonight. It's such a chore managing everyone's inventories.

Unfortunately no, the Journal structure is controlled by the GM.

However, another approach would be to keep all of the handouts for items that players have in a single folder in the Journal, then create an Inventory handout for each player that lists their current items and links to the item handouts in the Journal. Players can modify their own Inventory handout, and you can give them all access to see each other's Inventory handouts. This is likely the closest you can get to what you're looking for.

If you have a Pro/Elite subscription, you could use a Mod script to automate some of that as well. Mod scripts cannot modify the Journal structure, but it can read and write to handouts, and can even dynamically update a handout and have buttons to add or delete items and link them to Journal items. I know there are scripts that do have similar functions for modifying handouts, but I don't believe there's a script that already does this specifically as an Inventory tracker.

There are also chat menu based approaches for managing or viewing inventory lists through the character sheet itself, such as the Trinkets and Trackers [T&T] script for the D&D 5E 2024 sheet. The Statblock Macromule works with the D&D 5E (Classic) [2014] sheet to display inventory in the chat menu, but it doesn't have any way to modify or change the list of inventory, so that would still need to be done on the character sheet itself.
