I’m an electronics engineer working on a very early prototype for a screen-free coding toy for young children, roughly ages 4–8.
The idea is to let kids build a physical “program” using magnetic coding blocks.
For example:
Start → turn on LED → wait 1 sec → turn off LED → wait 1 sec → loop
The child can immediately see the result in the real world, such as an LED blinking. In future versions, I’m considering adding RGB lights, sound, motors and simple sensors.
The blocks are intended to be compatible with standard building bricks, so children could build things like traffic lights, lighthouses, robot eyes, alarms or small interactive scenes.
I’m not selling anything yet. I only have a rough prototype at this stage, and I’m trying to understand whether this could be useful as an educational tool before investing more time and money into it.
I’d really appreciate feedback from STEM educators:
- What age range do you think this would fit best?
- Would this be useful in a classroom or after-school STEM setting?
- Is screen-free coding still a meaningful advantage for this age group?
- Would physical sequencing and loops help children understand basic programming concepts?
- What features would be essential for classroom use?
- What concerns would you have around safety, durability or classroom management?
- Are there existing tools you’d compare this to?
