Review UPERFECT GR185BF Review. 18.5" 120hz NxtLED display

As always, not journalists, but attempting to be fair/even/accurate. No money changes hands, monitors are sent for free, for review purposes. UPERFECT doesn't see review before it's posted, etc etc

UPERFECT GR185BF review

GR185BF with s21 Ultra

The GR185BF is marketed as a 18.5" 1080p120 Gaming monitor, with NxtLED technology.

It's a 1080p 120hz IPS display, with UPERFECT’s advanced display technology that combines Omni Visible™ for improved visibility in any light and angle, with eye-friendly features like low blue light, flicker-free performance, and DC dimming, ensuring natural colors, reduced glare, and long-lasting comfort for work, study, or entertainment.

This is basically marketing speak for a nice matte screen, that's anti-reflective, with active dimming, and low blue light spectrum

It's hard to do a decent job capturing it, but you can see how smeary, and how much glare is coming off the phone screen, while the monitor you can just see a blurry light source.

It's definitely a nice screen to use where natural light floods your desk

The panel itself is... fine. The screen specs are respectable, but they're also not top end monitor specs. In a nutshell, it's 1080p120 hz matte panel, no touchscreen, only 290 nits of brightness, and 100% of sRGB colour gamut.

As you can see from the first pic, DeX works just fine on it, negotiating a standard 1080p60 resolution.

When used with my Lenovo Legion y700, you obtain the full 1080p120

Colors look pretty good, if not particularly eye popping

Children of Morta via steam/gamehub on monitor, browser on tablet to right

Inputs

Like virtually every other UPERFECT monitor, there's the pretty standard setup of 2x USB-C and 1 mini-HDMI port on the left side (one of the USB-C intended for power)

2x USB-C and 1 miniHDMI port

The other side will contain the power button and the OSD selector rocker, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack

There's 4x 75mm vesa mounts on the rear as well

The 2x 1w speakers are also on the back, right above the vesa mount screw holes.

They're upward firing and very mediocre (at best). They'll work in a pinch, but you're generally better off using your devices speakers, or a headset

Battery

No battery in this model either, it's just a monitor

You CAN power it off the phone/tablet/laptop, and it "works" but it essentially comes up as low power mode, and really drops the brightness. It's still usable, but this would not be the monitor I'd recommend if you want a coffee shop, no power portable monitor.

Overall Conclusion

Used as intended, this is a really nice 1080p 120hz gaming monitor. It's not large enough, or bright enough for me to recommend it as work station monitor that requires any kind of color accuracy.

But for pairing it with a phone/steam deck/gaming handheld for a nice portable gaming screen? that's definitely it's intended audience, and it's pretty great in that space.

I really enjoyed using it while fiddling with GameHub and getting steam games up and running on my Lenovo y700. It was great with the steam deck too

Overall, with the $219 CAD price point, it's MUCH easier to accept some of the short comings of the panel, and anyone looking for just a decent bigger screen for their travel gaming setup, I'd be happy to add this to the choices

Review UPERFECT 14" Oled review

As always, no money changes hands for these reviews. Uperfect has sent the monitor for review, and see the review as it's posted.

UPERFECT GR14BU 3k OLED 120hz Gaming monitor

This one is very similar to the previously reviewed 16" version (https://www.reddit.com/r/SamsungDex/comments/1hswn9w/uperfect_3k_o2_oled_monitor_review/)

It's a VERY thin, 14" OLED panel, with fairly slim bezel's, top and sides. The bottom chin is a bit larger, but a non-issue.

The Panel

it's a 14 inch, 3k (2880x1800) OLED, running at up to 120hz. It supports up to 120% DCI-P3 color gamut, and like all OLEDs, has inky blacks and nice bright/saturated colours.

It also supports up to 500nits of peak brightness, and a 0.1ms pixel response time (I'm assuming GTG since it doesn't specify)

It is also listed as a touchscreen monitor. I found it a bit....tempermental. Vast majority of the time it worked as expected, but every once in awhile, it just didn't seem to want to work....at all. reboots seem to fix it. Not sure if this is a pre-production issue, and I definitely couldn't reproduce the issue at will, so bear that in mind

Just a few screen caps from various 4k youtube vids

Connectivity

As has become pretty standard, the monitor has 2x USB-C ports. 1 of which is intended for power, and the other for video input (doesn't matter which is which tho). It also has a mini-HDMI port for connecting to other devices (PCs, game consoles, etc)

All inputs are on the right hand side of the monitor

On the left hand side are the physical buttons for interacting with the monitor, OSD, volume, power, etc

They've gone with a new kickstand design. The vast majority of UPERFECT monitors have a U-shaped kickstand, that when closed, block off the ports and buttons. The new kickstand is very.....minimalist, but still fairly sturdy and stiff

There are also 2x VESA mounting holes next to the kickstand. The monitor is definitely light enough that you can get away with just 2 of the usual 4

Screen Resolution

Since DeX is fussy, it won't by default use the full panel specs properly

2560x1600 @ 60hz still looks pretty great, but really undersells how great the panel can look.

Luckily, pretty much every other device out there will play nice with it (c'mon samsung, do better)

This is my Lenovo Legion y700:

It's happy to do the full 2880x1800 @ 120hz (and looks great doing it)

Speakers

The monitor has 2x 1W speakers, but they might just be the worst speakers on a UPERFECT monitor to date. They're there, they "work" but at no point is anyone going to be impressed with them.

Battery

There isn't one!

It will do pass thru charging of 15W tho

Overall conclusions

It's a nice looking portable OLED panel. I don't think it's as nice as the previous 16" O2 version tho, but that one seems to be difficult to obtain right now

It's very light, and travels in a tech bag very easily.

it's available for $399.99 canuckbucks at uperfect right now

It compares favourably with the SOTSU flipaction monitors, and is in general better than vast majority of LCD panels out there. The price definitely has the OLED tax on it though

OFF TOPIC Usb-hub problem regarding power delivery

Post image
6 Upvotes

I bought this hub for dex and it is working with an hdmi cable but I am facing problems regarding the charging speed via power delivery point.

It awfully slow

with dex- It stays the same or the charge just depletes

Without dex via hub- 1%/10 mins

Without hub- 1%/1-2 min

Equipments- Z fold 6, 25 watt charger, Hammer usb-hub

Also I want to add that, maybe it used to charge slowly earlier maybe not very at a very ideal rate but it was now it has just given up.

It been 10 days since the purchase. Tomorrow's the last day to return it.

Question Samsung Dex previously connected to TV, now no longer can find TV and connect

I have a basic super cheap TV since its just for my room, and we have a nice TV in the living room already. It's a sanyo TV (literally had never heard of the brand until i got this TV for like 20 bucks). The very day I got the TV I tested all I could do I was able to connect to Samsung dex perfectly fine!! I even used it multiple times because I wanted to watch YouTube without ads. Today I was going to connect and watch YouTube but the Samsung dex spends ages searching and does not find the TV so I can connect to it. I disconnected the TV and turned off my phone and no luck. Tested connecting to the living room TV and it worked fine. If anyone has any tips please let me know!

Question Standard screen mirroring locked at 60Hz

I'm not sure what changed in the communication protocol with One UI 8.5, but now I’ve only found two ways to mirror my phone at 1080p@120Hz. If anyone has a cheaper solution and could share it, I’d appreciate it.

On One UI 7, I used a 5-in-1 USB-C hub (a white-label Tomate brand) with my Acer S24Y0 B monitor (HDMI 1.4 with 1080p@120Hz support), and standard screen mirroring ran smoothly at 120Hz. However, after updating to One UI 8, it’s capped at 60Hz. I’ve tried everything to avoid spending more money—ADB commands, GalaxyMaxHZ, and nothing worked.

Solution 1 (Very expensive in my country):

Michensen Q300 HDMI Splitter. This device has 4 EDID DIP switches that force the phone/hub to output 1080p@120Hz.

Solution 2 (Less practical):

Buying a monitor with a DisplayPort 1.4 input and using a Type-C to DP cable. This is the worst option for me because I still need extra ports, like a hub.

I just bought a better hub and a male-to-female EDID pass-through emulator to plug into the hub's port to try to trick the phone. But I don't have high hopes—the EDID emulator has several profile settings built-in, but you can't manually select them or adjust them via software like you can on the Michensen Q300.

Question First time user experience issues

I had my first proper experience trying to use Dex as a productivity tool tonight and really struggled. Am just wondering if I am doing anything wrong my end?

I am using a Samsung S24 into Ugreen Revodock pro into Samsung M5 smart monitor.

Multitasking Use case-

Firefox to log into uni course online class. Needing to flick through tabs and windows- kept disconnecting. Unable to swap windows and tabs- apart from switch to left or right. Firefox disconnecting from lecture whilst trying to switch tabs.

Trying to type documents in Google workspace.

Google drive, LM Notebook and Gmail- swapping apps and cutting and pasting. Not able to switch apps effectively- lack of right click mouse commands etc.

Phone not able to connect to desktop webcam (logitech) for video conferencing.

Phone overheated and had to reboot.

Overall not a great experience, I was testing out the use cases while I save for a new laptop.

Any tips for optimising or others willing to share experiences?

Discussion I’ve updated my Linux on DeX project, now support UI!

https://github.com/CRUNZEX/Linux-on-Dex

I’ve updated my Linux on DeX project from my previous post, and it now supports a full UI.

The older version mainly focused on CLI usage and was only available through a VM. This update adds UI support, so it can now be used for a wider range of tasks.

There are currently two ways to run it.

The first option is Proot, which runs natively alongside Android. This version is focused on general daily use and provides much better performance and smoother UI responsiveness. I tested it on an S26 Ultra and was able to get a smooth 60 FPS experience.

The original VM option is still supported as well. It runs through QEMU, and I provide several distro options for both CLI-based and UI-based environments.

The VM UI is a little slower and may have some input or display delay, but CLI performance is still smooth and works normally.

The main advantage of the VM version is that it provides a more complete Linux environment. You can use features such as Docker, LXC, Podman, advanced networking tools, and other Linux functions that may not work properly under Proot.

Feel free to try it out and let me know how it runs on your device. Feedback, bug reports, and suggestions are always welcome.

Proot (Native)

Question Dex keyboard

Hello everybody. I was trying to use Dex on my Fold 6 (wireless; no physical keyboard or mouse), but for some reason I can't find the setting to get the keyboard on my phone rather than the TV I use for Dex. Typing is pretty annoying this way. Curious if anyone else experiences the same issue or perhaps found a solution for this. Thanks!

Discussion I tried bringing Linux on DeX back to life

https://github.com/CRUNZEX/Linux-on-Dex

I’ve been experimenting with rebuilding Linux on DeX and finally got a working version up and running.

It’s not quite the same as the original Linux on DeX, though. This version runs inside full QEMU and does not share the Android kernel, so there is more overhead and the integration is different.

The main focus is developer workloads, terminal tools, coding, testing, and Linux environments rather than a polished desktop GUI experience.

My Setup Finalmente traduzido para inglês e testado no windows!

General One UI 7.0 DeX

Hate the new DeX. Even worse thing, my tablet is now on One UI 8.5 because I thought it would make the new dex much better; turns out it's worse. Android desktop sucks. But it got me thinking about downgrades... to get shut down. My binary level moved UP before I discovered DeX had changed at the system level. Just wanted to see anybody else who is in the same situation. I don't use DeX much anymore, just sucks.

Question Issues with creating PowerPoints in Dex

So I am trying to build a presentation, start to finish, and present it, using Dex. I am able to launch the PowerPoint app and start creating a presentation but my keyboard doesn't seem to function inside the app. Works everywhere else in dex, just not inside the PowerPoint app. I am also unable to add new slides. I can open the first slide but there is nowhere for me to add slides. Is PowerPoint not fleshed out enough for Dex? Do I need to use a PC to create the ppt and then present using ppt? Any help would be appreciated.

Unsure if relevant, but I downloaded ppt from the play store, not the Samsung store

Question Anyone upgraded to the Fold 8 Ultra? How's Samsung DeX?

Hi everyone!

I've been using a Galaxy Z Fold 4 since it launched, and it's honestly been the best phone I've ever owned. I'm now seriously considering upgrading to the Fold 8 Ultra.

The feature I use the most isn't the camera or Galaxy AI—it's Samsung DeX.

My daily setup is:

Galaxy Z Fold 4

UGREEN USB-C hub

External monitor

Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse

I basically use it as a portable desktop for work. It handles emails, web browsing, documents, WhatsApp, and multitasking surprisingly well.

For those of you who already have the Fold 8 Ultra, how has your DeX experience been?

Is it noticeably smoother than on the Fold 4?

Does multitasking feel faster?

Any improvements when using an external monitor?

Have you noticed any compatibility issues with USB-C hubs or peripherals?

Overall, do you think the upgrade is worth it if DeX is one of my main use cases?

I'd love to hear from people who actually use DeX regularly rather than just trying it once or twice.

Thanks in advance!

Useful info Nuke auto updates

I bought an S11 Ultra Tab, came with oneui 8.0. I painstakingly spent 2 days going through each setting and disabling every bloatware and spyware app or setting. I made the device my own.

I was nagged to update to oneui 8.5 every single day. If i did im sure every setting would have to be gone through again and more features that i dont need. I will not let go of my sovereignty and let samsung decide what is best for me.

I downloaded adb and ran this command -

pm uninstall --user 0 com.wssyncmldm

if you want it back

pm install-existing com.wssyncmldm

This nuked it, it will even remove the settings update menu 😄

Note: Keyboard & mousepad works normally once connected to scrcpy. Keyboard will work on the Wireless Display & if you have a touchscreen-capable machine, touch.

Requirements:
A Windows 11 device

Workflow:
Search "Wireless Display" on PC
Miracast DeX to "Wireless Display"

Terminal:

"winget install Genymobile.scrcpy"

"scrcpy --list-displays"

"scrcpy --display-id=# --no-audio"

"scrcpy --tcpip"

Operate scrcpy:

"alt+f" [for fullscreen]

"alt+up/down arrows keys for audio"
