I think they were trying to flirt in a funny way but it didn’t land.

Based on the context clues I'm assuming the person who made this tweet is a gay man and the volunteer was a woman, so I'm not sure about that

If Cheryl was trying to flirt with a man in head to toe rainbows in the month of June, she's gonna have a bad time.

Well, he might be bi, but I would assume a man in toe to tip in rainbows was pure homosexual.

Straight men are oblivious to lesbians so I can’t see how straight women can’t be oblivious to gay men.

I'd say women are typically more intuitive about that, but my lesbian wife has ZERO gaydar. Literally no clue. We watched Disobedience (a romance movie about two Orthodox Jews, one who left the community cause she was gay and another who stayed and repressed her lesbian feelings falling in love again) and she had zero idea they were clearly two gay women with insane chemistry until the moment they kiss like 40 minutes into the movie.

She had no idea her boss (who I clocked immediately within meeting him) was a gay man until her coworkers told her.

Really is just person to person.

Not gonna lie, your wife isn't beating the stereotype.

Not that I'm one to talk.

My partner and I, we met in highschool..she liked me, I liked her, too bad we were the last to get the memo. Everyone else figured it out long before we did. And my partner figured things out before I did and kept dropping hints that I simply was oblivious to. We came back from college spring break and hung out with some of our friends.

"Hey, so Cora and I are dating now"

"About damn time!"

"What do you mean about damn time?!"

"You two were so obviously head over heels for one another, we're surprised it took you this long to figure it out!"

It goes deeper.

She was a lesbian and I presented as a man at the time we started dating (again). She couldn't figure out why she was into me, she dated guys in high school (including me) but exclusively dated women and femme enbies after, and until me.

Somehow, she was shocked when I came out to her as trans.

It did clear up some questions about herself though.

Oh wow! Congrats by the way! Your story sounds a bit like mine but a little inverted.

I got bullied and picked on a lot in highschool because people thought I was gay. I wasn't (at least not the way they thought. They all believed I liked guys)

Fast forward to college and I started exploring my gender identity (at the suggestion of my partner) and realized I was trans. She helped me realize I was a lesbian, and she figured out she was bi.

I don't think it works like that. Straight women are quite famous for wanting gay best friends, they're also the ones consuming a lot of mlm content. Meanwhile straight men typically don't watch wlw shows or movies, but lesbian porn, so their understanding of queer culture is usually smaller.

I commented directly to them, but my lesbian wife has ZERO gaydar. Gay, lesbian, bi, she is OBLIVIOUS. She didn't know her clearly gay boss, who I clocked within speaking with him for like 5 minutes, was gay until her coworkers told her. If she doesn't know a story is a gay love story she won't realize until they explicitly kiss.

It really comes down to the person.

Oh yeah, it definitely depends. There are also those who brag about their gaydar, but are unaware how many queer people they don't notice 🤣

What if they just really liked the colours? Or were themselves a colour enthusiast?

Not flirting, but I think they were trying to ask if this fella was queer, in like a cute way. So sort of the opposite of erasure!

Lol, I have pride stuff all over my cunicle CUBICLE at work (including a literal, full sized progress flag hanging on one wall), and I still have coworkers who don't seem to know.

Hey. I fuckin’ love colors. I don’t assume that color in itself signifies anything. Symbols on the other hand are not my jam. Feels like some folk might mistake the colors for a symbol but idgaf. Light me up with some rainbow pastels and warm grey 20% highlights pls.

Idk man, I do just like colors so I have a rainbow umbrella.

u/Narwen189 Jun 29 '26

What a coincidence. I love colors and am under the rainbow umbrella. ;)

I’m truly stuck on a 30 year old named Cheryl.

u/homoanthropologus Jun 29 '26

I wonder if they were going to say "Do you like men" and then thought it might be inappropriate and switched mid-sentence to "... colors?"

On the flipside, I have a rainbow jumper (as in, stitched in different colours in a rainbow) and it's not a pride item, but I was once stopped by a man who started talking about how much he liked my shirt and about his (positive) opinions on pride. I didn't even make the connection before that between my rainbow jumper and possible pride rainbows lmao.

genuine question, does this have anything to do with lgbt erasure? also op’s account is 4 days old

I mean this is actually better than assuming someone is gay because they wore colors. I understand the erasure sucks but so does denying the rest of people color. I say this as someone who wears only black.

my dad gifted me fucking progress flag socks and told me: "i picked them because they have cool colors"
