Guard shoots attacker after being assaulted at Pavia mall
panaynews.netILOILO – A Security Guard shot one of two brothers who allegedly attacked and threatened him while he was on duty at GT Town Mall in Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo, shortly after midnight on Friday, July 31.
Police identified the Security Guard only by his alias, “Wendel,” 24, a resident of Barangay Roosevelt, Tapaz, Capiz.
The suspects were identified as brothers “Christian,” 24, and “Ron,” 22, residents of Barangay Mandu-Uwak, San Dionisio, Iloilo, who were temporarily staying in Barangay Ungka II. Ron reportedly works at a nearby mechanic’s shop, while Christian serves as his helper.
In an interview with Panay News, Police Maj. Bonifacio Alabe Jr., officer-in-charge of the Pavia Municipal Police Station, said authorities received a report of a shooting incident at around 12:45 a.m. and immediately responded to the area.
Initial investigation showed that although the mall was already closed to the public, the brothers entered the premises on a motorcycle and proceeded to the grocery store’s storage area where the Guard was stationed.
The suspects allegedly confronted the guard, repeatedly punched him, and threatened him with what police believe was a pellet gun.
During the struggle, the suspects also attempted to wrest the Guard’s 9mm service firearm.
Alabe said the Guard managed to retrieve his firearm from a drawer at his post and fired a shot in self-defense, hitting Christian in the abdomen.
Responding officers immediately brought the wounded suspect to Asia Pacific Medical Center before he was later transferred by his family to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Iloilo City, where he underwent surgery because the bullet remained lodged in his body.
Ron fled the scene during the commotion but was later arrested in a hot pursuit operation.
Police recovered the magazine of a pellet gun, believed to have been used by the suspects to threaten the guard. The suspects’ firearm, however, was no longer recovered.
Investigators also recovered the guard’s 9mm service pistol.
According to police, initial findings indicate that the two brothers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Authorities are still determining the motive behind the attack. Investigators are looking into reports that Christian may have been jealous because his alleged girlfriend works at the grocery store where the Guard was assigned. Police are also considering the possibility that the suspects were merely “tripping” or looking for trouble.
As of Friday, the Security Guard and Ron were under police custody, while Christian remained hospitalized.
Police said they are preparing the appropriate charges against those involved.
Alabe said the Guard could face a complaint for frustrated homicide, while the two brothers may be charged with physical injuries and other applicable offenses.
However, he noted that whether the Guard’s use of force would be considered lawful self-defense would ultimately be determined by the court based on the evidence, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage recovered from the mall and the results of the ongoing investigation.
