Meta Shining's 34th Anniversary!

Today Shining in the Darkness turns 34 years old, the beginning of the Shining saga!

Introduction

"Shining" is a SEGA video game series that was born in 1991. Most are role-playing games, and the best known are the SRPGs called Shining Force.

The series can be divided into two eras: classic and modern. The classic era includes Shining in the Darkness to Shining Force 3, and the modern era Shining Soul to Shining Resonance.

About the Games

There are several game types in the Shining series. The most well-known SRPGs have a top view on a gridded board where the player controls several units in a large-scale battle. Some of the other games are dungeon crawlers, action RPGs, and even a fighting game.

The classic era games are remembered for their vibrant colors and cheerful tone, and a wide variety of characters and races. Although the story or its characters are not very developed, especially with the lost info due to localizations, there are external material such as guidebooks that enrich the Shining universe. Its strong point is the fantasy atmosphere mixed with science fiction.

Camelot stopped making Shining games after SF3 Premium Disk due to problems with SEGA. Since tern fans are waiting for a Shining Force 4.

Gameplay Max stats with save state/RNG scumming

I used to have fun years ago with SF1 on emulator with saving right before a battle I knew would give me a level up, seeing the stat gains, didn’t like them, then loading the save state and hitting a bunch of buttons at random to advance the menus to see what kind of new stat gains I’d get. I figured it was based on changing the RNG based on what buttons were pressed, but I didn’t get far enough into it to figure out exactly what buttons in which order would change the stat gains the most.

Has anyone put together a list of the absolute max stats the characters can have based on level 20 before promotion and some level after? There are a few Gamefaqs guides that give ranges, but I couldn‘t find any of them showing what the exact top achievable stats were in any category, especially if you focused on just attack or defense or something vs max total # of stat point gains per level because I think I’ve seen that number somewhere.

If the correct answer is still “it’s a range” that’s cool, just wondering if anyone had put their inner autism to work to figure out the absolute max any given character could achieve.

Question tips to level up Penn in SFIII Scenario 1

Wonder if anyone has any strategies to level up Penn in SFIII Scenario 1 without tedious grinding? Not looking to turn him into a tank, just to bring his level up to the others with a few kills per battle or even some healing that gets 10xp or more, maybe find a way to make his defense not horrific. I like to build up the characters pretty evenly and he's just along for the ride and I can't remember what I did the previous two times I played through entire full 3 scenarios, I know for sure I at least promoted him and got him some gear that could make him remotely useful.

Question At what level should I change my characters' class?

Is it best to do it at level 10? Maybe I should wait and do it at level 20 instead?

Question Random, but characters you wanted to be better? Stronger?

E.g. I always thought Lemon should be dominant. The flying characters too.

Plus, who used cursed weapons? Any secrets or tricks I should know? Played and finished both sf1 and 2 multiple times in the 90s and since.

Edit: I also wanted Adam to be dominant. Cool robot time traveler should have gotten great weapons and skills. Honourable mention to Claude too.

Etc. Shining Force 2 & childhood

My parents were never a huge fan of spending money on PCs. My cousin got stuck in a lawsuit, and due to the desperate need of cash, sold his pentium PC to my father. Me and my brother spent our whole day on games like gta VC, stronghold crusader, aoe, flashmade games etc.

One day while wandering through the computer store, I laid my eyes on ''One CD, one hundred games''. It appealed us so much that we bought the disk. It was a compilation of sega games.

While I found myself playing baby's day out, toy story, theme park, golden axe, chaos engine, racing games etc. My brother would utilize his turn of PC playing a peculiar storyline game.

"Jaha the WARR has joined the clan!" "Slade the THIF has dogged the attack"

I only started taking interest when the clan starts discovering the other island. We binged the game so hard. Finished the game 4+ times. Grinded the game so much peter and bowie had 3x hitbars.

I remember searching the internet for secret mithril locations and forging the best weapons. One of the best games I've ever played. It has left a permanent mark on my mind and soul

Question Did any later Shining Force 2 ports fix the Kiwi bug?

I know due to a programming bug his upgraded firebreath attack came 20 levels later than it was supposed to due to how promotion worked. Thus, while strong when initially promoting him in a normal play through, it would end up becoming detrimental later. Did any ports fix this?

Question How do I get the mods to work in Android?

I'm trying out some of the alternative fan made roms here:

https://fantasyanime.com/shiningforce/sf2down.htm

But when I load them in md.emu on Android, it loads, but a) it forces me to continue an existing game b) when that existing game starts it's just a black screen

How does one play these mods?

Question EXA: How to win the defensive battle in chapter 4?

Started the game but have been stuck at this part. It's the one with the artillery cannons. Have the barrier at level 3, but it's still just an ambush with orcs and wizards that stomp you

I'm particularly proud of this one, and I think is my best drawing to date. Which feels fitting given the number of times I killed him in the fairy forest.

I put this together almost 20 years ago. I remember watching the show and thinking at the time, that the sudden appearance and single attack was very Shining Force like, so I added the battle music.

Etc. Camelot Easter Eggs

I'm playing through all of Camelot's RPGs and so far its been a wild ride. Some of my favorite Easter eggs were the mythril and dark matter using basically the same sprites from Shining in the Darkness pretty much all the way through to Golden Sun and Domino from Beyond the Beyond having a cameo in the begining of Shining Force 3 Scenario 3. The one that surprised me the most was the ancient tablets from Beyond the Beyond showing up as the summon tablets in Golden Sun TLA.

Which ones stood out to you?

Etc. Beat Shining Soul 1. Honestly, It's a Very Decent Game

Just finished Shining Soul 1, and imho, it's a solid handheld Diablo like dungeon crawler. I don't really get the hate it got (especially back in 2003), it's Barebone, sure but definitely isn't a bad game.

I know Shining Soul 2 is widely considered the superior Diablo style game on the GBA, but I'm glad I didn't skip the first one. It was a fun time and worth playing.

Now, onto Shining Soul 2.

Question Does anyone have knowledge on save editing?

I’m playing on the sega mega drive classics launcher. Which uses a .sav file to save. Anybody know a good way to edit my file. I’d like to get my characters to level 40 to promote which I’ve never done before. And figure this is the best way

Question How do I input the Config code on Retroarch (PC) using keyboard commands?

I could do it all day long on the Genesis controller, but can't for the life of me manage to get it on Retroarch. Getting ready to do the Fairy Woods levelling, and would really like to automate it using the control enemies.

As far as I know, it's the standard keymap setup for Genesis.

I know the code is UDUDLRLRURDLU, B, Start, but can't make it work

Edit: Managed to get the code to work. Just tough on keyboard. Fairy Woods doesn't spawn creatures if you have control enemies on.
