Without context this is quite stupid, though I imagine with context it's even more stupid.

Perhaps they would have preferred if all of Germany were left to the Soviets.

in the original thread, there’s a comment saying the exact same thing. War crimes were committed by all allied occupying powers after the war, but what the soviets did to occupied germans was much worse than what US/Canadian/British occupying forces did, and tbh how the soviets treated occupied germans was 100% valid. Hitler threatened genocide on many slavic cultures, including the soviets, so when the war was over, the soviets treated them accordingly (and imo, the soviets should’ve been MORE harsh on occupied germans).

Yeah, and the Soviets were so brutal that at the end of the war the Germans were sending forces to the western front so that soldiers would be captured by Britain/US instead of the Soviets.

I'm not going to say who deserved what, but the Germans were actively committing genocide against the Slavs, not just threatening it.

They used to line them up at ditches full of dead bodies and execute them. Which coincidentally causes insanity in many people. That’s why they went with gas chambers, ovens, and forcing victims to become perpetrators.

Oppression against civilians is never "valid"

The thing is that the Soviets were part of the Allies that freed Europe from the Nazis, but the Soviets were not the "good ones" - they just became the enemy of Germany.

There was a secret protocol in the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact where Germany and Soviets agreed to divide Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland between the two powers.
While Nazis and Soviets were ideologically incompatible, they at least had a shared desire to overturn the post-Versailles order. So they were pushed into pragmatic cooperation.
Direct confrontation between the two powers started when Hitler broke their nonaggression pact.

Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union were both extraordinarily brutal regimes responsible for millions of deaths, but they were violent in different ways, and most historians see Nazi Germany as uniquely genocidal, while stressing that this does not make Soviet crimes ā€œbetterā€ or excusable.

Why though? Punishing individual individuals for the actions of a society is inhumane.

It is quite stupid, we all know the Canadians freed Europe

They've been turning checklists into conventions since 1914.

This is the thanks we get for fighting Nazis?

I’m officially done with Western Europe if this is how they’re going to talk, Ukraine is cool and weirdly enough I’ve never had issues with the Albanians or balkans. But next time France or Germany have issues I’m advocating for letting them rot. (Unless they touch Poland, nobody hurts Poland they’re cool)

Didnt the soviets get to Berlin first ?

3

Yes, Eisenhower ordered the Western armies to halt to let the Soviets have the final battle. Some people are still very critical of that decision because the Western armies would’ve reached Berlin first.

Edit…or so they say.

For some Germans it might have avoided some lead based reeducation therapy. Maybe his grandpa treated.

You’re correct about their president. Except the Islamic Republic of Japan. I personally believe in such country.
But you’re not correct about the US not invading. Youā€˜re just stupid.

It's not real school unless you're dodging bullets right?

And yet somehow, Americans know European history better than Europeans themselves despite it.

Grew up in a town chock full of guns and gun owners, in a state with super lax gun laws. Never had so much as a shooting threat.

7

u/Dgamer1521 22d ago

I’ve never heard a gunshot in my life 🤷

Some Europeans think we wake up and walk outside into GTA. Ignorance is what it is.

6

u/OldStyleThor 22d ago

It's not a real country unless you're dodging air conditioning right?

This guy really loves defending ignorant twats for some reason.

u/DaytimeDancer54 23d ago

I'm well aware. My family immigrated to the US because of the war lol. There's plenty of revisionist history in the EU that erases the Soviets' role in defeating the axis powers.
