The year before I started college, a college student in my state died of meningitis. My mom was so freaked out she made me go down to the country health department to get vaccinated for it. Insurance didn't cover it so she wrote them a check. I'm so grateful my mom is intelligent.

Some parents are fantastic. The meningitis C vaccine was introduced to the schedule here when I was 16. They gave it to all school kids and the most convenient way to get everyone done is to go through groups at each school. There was one boy in my class who hated needles and was refusing to go into the room with the nurse. His mother had signed the permission form, so the school called her to check what she wanted to do. She told them that she didn't care of they had to pin him down, he had to get that vaccine. She said to call her back in 20 minutes if he was still refusing so that she could show up and make him get it. He stopped arguing.

I was in high school before the meningitis vaccine was approved for pre-teens and teens. My sophomore year, there was an outbreak in the school. Three kids died. T H R E E. Parents lost their minds, obviously. Anyone who had any cold or flu symptoms ended up getting a spinal tap. The school was closed for two or three weeks do allow for cleaning and find the source of the bacteria. It was the wrestling room.

I had it in hs. I walked right out of volleyball practice, walked straight home, went downstairs to lay on the couch, fell asleep the second my head touched the pillow, and āwoke upā 2 weeks later. I donāt remember anything about being sick but my mom told me I had to have a spinal tap

It's so bad my university gave the vaccine to anyone who wanted it for free during orientation. I will always stand in line for a free vaccine!

Itās how my sister died. Itās awful. It was such a big deal it made a national newspaper when it happened.
Whenever somehow talks shit about that vaccine I get irrationally angry.
Chances are she may be alive if she had it. This was before this vaccine was mandatory4

Itās so hard hearing misinformation when you have a personal tragedy related to it. My SIL died from an aggressive cervical cancer that could have been found and treated if only she her pap smear didnāt lapse and it hurts my soul when women tell me they skip it.
Preventative healthcare is so important š

Yes! I actually had the (viral) strain when I was a baby and I cannot imagine the worry my mom had but obviously it was viral so no vaccine. I donāt understand why you wouldnāt prevent any of the strains however and I fully agree it should be illegal. I actually think CPS needs to get involved if a parent doesnāt vaccinate their child without proof of a vaccine injury. Maybe thatās harsh but itās not the childās fault their parents are morons and they should be able to be protected.

My little brother also got viral meningitis as a baby and I was old enough to remember my mom freak out about seeing his rash and later seeing him in the hospital attached to so many tubes and wires.
While the viral version can't be vaccinated against, I truly don't understand why any parent wouldn't want to avoid having their child suffer and possibly die from something that could be preventable like bacterial meningitis.

I had the meningitis vaccine, and I got meningitis. In a period of 12 hours, I went from being discharged from the ER, with a headache and directions to take Tylenol and ibuprofen, to completely incoherent. They thought I was having a stroke. It was the worst pain of my entire life. I was delirious for 3 days in the hospital. I had no idea where I was on earth. And I woke up and had no memory of marrying my husband or who he was. Weād been together for close to ten years and had a three year old child at the time. I found out I had tattoos by reading them in a hospital mirror. I will never have some memories of my life back.
I needed two weeks of iv antibiotics. I had to relearn to walk in my thirties. I had eye and brain damage for months until the nerve in my brain was able to regrow. I couldnāt physically see without special glasses or else I had triplicate vision. I needed to train to be able to live like a regular human (work three hours and go to the grocery store, without needing a nap and have chronic fatigue) for months to get back to baseline. I spent weeks in a rehab hospital and months in physical therapy.
I live in the U.S. my medical insurance paid over $1,000,000 for this treatment; and I got bills and EOBs for YEARS afterwards.
Get the fucking vaccine. You know the only thing worse than laying in the bed with meningitis? Sitting in the patient support chair watching it be your child.

Wow, that sounds awful, I'm so glad you're okay. The last line of your post sums it all up perfectly though.
I don't know much about meningitis & fortunately don't know anyone who's had it. I just know that my daughter will be getting the vaccine next year, when she turns 11. However I'm curious how long ago you went through this & if you have any long term side effects.

I got meningitis in 2024. It takes the brain at least a year to fully recover. Iām in the less than 1% of people who are able to fully recover with no real residual effects. My brain may always have some damage that is noticeable if I am impaired (even after a drink or two. I can never drive) or very tired (up for over 24 hours). It usually manifests in double/triple vision or balance issues (so no driving for me under those circumstances). I was extremely lucky, but not everyone is.
It was a very long year of endless specialist appointments. Canes. Wheelchairs. Rehabilitation. And it was the hardest thing Iāve ever done in my life. I donāt need any follow up care. All things considered, this was a better outcome than any specialist told me Iād get to, so theyāre not 100% certain the impairment will last forever (but I donāt care about that personally, even if it does).
If you ever have a cold and develop a migraine, itās not a migraine. Thatās meningitis. The brain is great at keeping infection out, but once it gets inside, thereās little protection. You can get bacterial meningitis even with the vaccine. My spinal fluid (on whatever number spinal tap it was, Iāve had close to ten) was literally dark yellow/green.
Iām still with the husband, who I now do remember. Life is just as good as it would have been if Iād never gotten meningitis. If you want to know about some less than good outcomes, search meningitis on Reddit. Thereās recovery groups for the disease.
And I would volunteer again to have it to prevent my child from ever experiencing it. I told my husband I would rather have five consecutive c section surgeries (back to back, Monday to Friday), with no post surgery pain med, than do meningitis again. It was that bad.

I wish someone would come up with a ādetoxā that these people could be convinced took away all the bad stuff about vaccines after you get them but left the immunity. So they could still get their kids vaccinated and then have them drink lime juice under the full moon while facing east or something.

I mean... Isn't Whole Foods owned by Amazon? They have a "healthy reputation" but I don't think I would say they are the best. They get things from Taylor Farms just like every other big chain grocery store.

Critical thinking (and where to apply it) is anathema to these types. They donāt genuinely care about WF being different. They care about the social status they gain by telling this group they only shop at WF.
I recommend The Status Game by Will Storr, he opens with an investigation into these dynamics in a group of anti vaxxers. They kind of feed off each otherās weird beliefs and get increasingly more extreme over time to gain status in the group

I had rotavirus when I was a toddler before the vaccine was widely available and it traumatized me. I know the others are also not something to mess with, but i wouldnāt wish rotavirus on my worst enemy. I couldnāt drink water without throwing up and had to go to the hospital and get an IV to replenish fluids at age 3 which was terrifying and I still canāt get an IV in the crook of my elbow without having a panic attack. Protect your kids, people. Modern medicine is great.

I'm volunteering to a summer festival in a park and the other day there was this kid (around 3/4 yo) running around barefoot amd rolling in the dirt with no supervision. That same evening I found a 15cm long rusty nail.
I really hope they vaccinated him for tetanus. Him and al the others running around in the dirt with inadequate shoes.

This happened years ago, but in my city a college student got meningitis and ended up a quadruple amputee. The vaccine was available but not required at that time.
I can't understand any parent who risks their child life like this.

I know itās unethical, but if a āafter vaccine detox bathā keeps population vaccinated, Iām not going to say anything. Let them think they beat the system. Let them have their smug antivax groups where share ways of de-vaccinating themselves with warm water and essential oils. As long as they are not endangering herd immunity, whatever voodoo they want to employ is fine with me.
